Did they go into any ethical questions? Were the interviews half hour each? They ask about healthcare system, uninsured, etc?

Neither of my interviewer's asked any of these types of questions. It is more of a "get to know you" type of interview, and it was conducted as if I was sitting at a table with a friend just talking. It really was that laid back.

Another interesting fact were the UF board scores. If the information we got was correct, and I don't doubt that it is, their average score for step one was the highest average of any school in the country ... 234 for the students who took it last year, and not one of them failed. Very impressive.

Wow, that's awesome. Of the two people I was refering to in the post at the end of the previous page, one of them said it was the impressive board scores that was one of the many reasons that she was swayed towards UF. Of course, UF was her original alma mater in her youthful years, so that may have done something to sway her towards the Gainesville area too.

Hey Guju I was there at the premed forum last year at USF. Are you refering to the female med students who came from UF? They were great. I think one was undergrad at FSU in the band, and the other was going into OBGYN? We invited them to come to UNF to talk at one of our premed meetings. They were so helpful. The more I hear about UF the more I like it. I have heard before that they have a very competitive atmosphere but I hope thats not true, and from the sound of it, it seems like its pretty cool. I guess I will find out more at my interview next week.

Yup yup. Those were the people I was referring too. I actually knew two people from their graduating class. One of the girls I talked about on the first page had a sister who graduated from their last year, and who is doing residency in Shands. The other person I knew was the son of one of my 'rents friends. I wonder if we met each other at the forum.

You might find out more about what the actual medical school atmosphere is by posting on the medical student portion of this website. I'm sure the students who post on there might be helpful.

But I don't think you can go wrong with any of the med schools in Florida, especially the three more well known ones: UF, USF, and UMiami. They've all got awesome reputations and board scores and residency match lists.

Ya I am pretty sure my top two choices are USF and UF. I have been to USF several times, met with Rel several times, and have been very impressed. Mainly with the atmosphere at the school. Rel and everyone else there is so helpful and the support seems really great. My main factor in choosing a school is where I will be the happiest (sane), and I have already got that feeling from USF. If I get that feeling from UF as well, than I will look into other factors. Basically I had decided to go to USF from the start, but after my MCAT score I realized I had a shot at UF. I think its going to be a tough decision because I am kinda indecisive and its a big decision....but we'll see.

BTW, maybe we did meet. I have big curly hair...?? 🙂 I was also at the application workshop a lil while after the forum.

goood luck to all your FL interviewees 👍

anyone have any info on the miami interview? what they ask, is it laid back, etc?

i can't seem to find the interview feedback forum.

To those of you who have recieved the interview packet via USPS, what time does the day start. I think it is at 9 but im not sure. Also for those of you familiar with the Miami area, would it be doable to catch a cab from the airport to the med school within 1 hour? Thanks for all help....Just trying to make travel plans. 🙂

The airport and the med school are very close together- an hour is plenty of time, but that is assuming you are on the ground, and out of the plane on time. If your flight arrives at 8, and you need to be at UM at 9, it could be dodgy.

The day starts at 9:00 am.
Miami in the morning is not good. 🙁
when you get your packet it will tell you to plan 1 hour in advance because of traffic. you can get lucky in get there in 20 minutes or in 1 hour. it all depends.
i live about 40 minutes away, I am planning to leave my house the day of my interview like at 7:30 am. that will give me 1 hour and half to get there. i will probably be early, but its better to wait.

The flight im planning on taking is supposed to arrive at 7:40 AM and it is the first flight of the day so it should not be delayed. So I think I could pull it off. It would save me a lot of money too. Thanks Guys

That's why I go to FAU. I need only six minutes to get to campus each morning.

People complain about this all the time, but I really dont think it's that bad. From the beach to the coral gables campus sucks if you go at the wrong time and going beyond the airport on 836 can be horrendous (stop watching the airplanes!). But, I think I've lived in worse cities for traffic.

The one thing about moving to miami, if you're not from there, is that how slow everything moves takes some getting used to. You may not notice it at first, but people really do take their sweet time down there. With everything.

You dont think is bad?
it takes me one hour to drive to work and school every single day, back and forth.
i consider that bad.

Do you remember when they start interviewing? 😉
Thanks,

I think they have already started interviewing early decision applicants.

Oh, and I have some info about our new interviewing practices this year. PM me if you want to know.

I guess it depends on where you live and where you go to school. Some parts are way worse than others, but I dont think it's much worse than any other major city.

From last year, I remember some people were asked healthcare system, as well as ethical questions -- it depends on your interviewer. I didn't any, but I did get the infamous 'how many supreme court justices can you name?' question. Can't remember how long they were (~45 minutes each?), and I didn't get any curveballs.

Good luck!

That's easier now; there're only seven of them at the moment, because Chief Justice Renquist recently died and Justice O'Conner is retiring. FYI to anyone who gets asked this, the other seven are Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Clarence Thomas, Antonin Scalia, John Paul Stevens, David Souter, Stephen Breyer, and Anthony Kennedy. John Roberts has been nominated to fill the Chief Justice vacancy.

Miami has no record of me on their website...no love I tell ya.

where's the interview feedback thread or forum??

So where's your top choice for the Florida school??? I toured FSU's new facilities last year and was pretty impressed. Especially those new learning communities they have for the students. For research, they are not yet up there, but for primary care and clinical practice, I think the school itself was awesome.

You need to be in the conference room at 11:15AM. There will be a tour and two interviews around 1:30PM. At 3:30PM, there will be a question and answer session and the day will finish around 4 - 4:30PM.

I really like the school, and the program, the way they have it, and the attention they give to community medicine.
I can see myself there, 😀

I havent heard anything from them, and it shows up on my status page as letters not being received...at least thats what I think it means, its not very clear. Should I do anything? I called once to check but left a message and since have not heard anythign...

Hey guys 🙂

I've got a question for those of you who has U of Miami COM as your top choice.
why....?

I mean I totally agree that UM COM is a good school but why won't you wanna go to USF or UF over UM. I mean all the med schools in Florida is not bad (except for FSU, which I don't really know cause it's brand new...), and they are all similer in rankings and students' levels etc... Why then some of you want to pay $10,000 more per year to attened UM? Is there anything about UM that's better than UF or USF? or it's just personal reasons?

Don't get me wrong... if I can get into UM, I'd be very happy. But if I had a choice among these three, I'd pick UF or USF over UM just because it's much cheaper tuition and living cost wise....

😕

It still shows my letters as having not been received and I'm interviewing there on Friday so you're probably fine. However, if you're really worried, you can always call them.

As long as the medical school is a U.S. school and has full accreditation, it's going to be a good school.

You know what they call the person who graduates last in his/her class at the lowest ranked medical school?

Doctor.

No....And I called them all day, but no one Answered. My Friend who is also interviewing Friday has been trying to get in touch with them for 3 days and has left several messages with no call back. Deffinitely not making a very good first impression with me. Why would they not tell people where/when to interview? 😡

Anyways, Did you get your info directly from the school, and if so how?

Thanks

I got it directly from the school. The lady that called to ask to come Friday for an interview gave me a rundown of the day.

Miami's tuition is higher, but it's a private school and it gives financial aid to many of its students, so your cost of going there could be comparable to attending UF or USF. My feeling is that you can't go wrong by attending any one of the three, and we are extremely fortunate to have so many good choices here in FL. 🙂

Quite a number of people can get scholarships to UM. I did; and I'm already on a full ride curtesy of the military. The financial aid department was kind enough to directly deposit all of my scholarship money into my bank account.

Another reason you might want to pick Miami over the other schools is because the wide variety of clinical experiences that you'll receive. At Jackson Memorial Hospital, many of the patients are so grateful to have someone talk to them that students are considered the doctors. You'll be allowed to do pprocedures even as a first year that many of your friends will not even see until third/fourth year or even residency. In fact, the dean of students said of one second year, "She's scrubbed in on more surgeries than I have."

Further, if you go to the FAU campus, you'll be in a small class that resembles a family environment. The deans know us by heart and will even have lunch with us.

Last year I had to arrive just before 11:00am at the medical building. You'll be allowed to park immediately beside the school. Of course, they could have changed everything by now.

So who all will be at UF tomorrow?

😕

I personally had a fantastic experience there as a post-bacc. Granted, that is through the undergrad campus, but I thought the over arching attention to students Miami has is really unbelievably good. For taking large lecture classes, I felt the professors were really attentive, and very smart, dedicated people, and that the administration revolves the school around what its students want and need. I went to Penn for undergrad, which is nothing to shake a stick at, and honestly, Miami in these departments kicked it's butt. And I get that vibe to be one that is overarching, throughout the graduate schools as well.

Miami students seem to love to complain, so I'm sure there will be some objections to that, but that's my reasoning.

UF and USF have thoroughly impressed me too though- and personal connections to one school or another aside, I have no idea which I would go for. I'd love to take a look at them both. Florida is definitely the state with the best options IMHO.

Guys I wanted to congratulate all of you that have received interviews - good job! It feels good that finally, there is some light at the long end of this pre-medical tunnel

IMO all florida schools are very comparable (although I have no experience with F.S.U.), and each offers their own unique features.

What are some of the pro's of U.F.? I have been doing thorough research on all four schools.

I will. 🙂

They said yesturday that they have 200 complete applications at this point and have scheduled 60 interviews so far and its about 60% chance of being accepted if you get an interview (i think that is what they said, i cannot remember exactly how it was worded)...and statistically 90% of the people that interview at UF get accepted somewhere (this i'm sure they said)....this info made me feel better!

Congrats on the UF interview 👍. UF is really a top-quality program.

I'm hoping I get one there soon. They gave me one last year when I applied in December (long story on the very late application) so here's hoping for this year 🙂

Hi everyone. Inverviewed at UF today. I was very impressed with the school in all dimensions. The interviewers were very nice and really made me feel comfortable. No ethically questions or other tricky questions.

Good luck everyone.
