Something tells me that going to UM with you guys for the next four years is going to bring a lot of laughs!!!

Lily... I can tell you what worked for me:

I recall everything so vividly.. [looks away].. ooooooOOOOOOOO(

"It was a humid, mildly hot friday afternoon... the smell of the underpriveledged of Jackson, which oddly enough smelled like roasting peanuts, emanated through the air... along with car exhaust...

I wore a Suit Jacket, a nice shirt with tie... abercrombie & fitch cologne - soft, yet masculine.... and adidas gym pants (the type that button up along the legs).

My interviewer came and met with me in the master control center, which I call the "Admission's office," after a lunch that consisted of trail mix and assorted green vegetables. He looked at my pants startled..... it was there I knew I made myself stand out from the rest of the candidates... "It was working.. it was working" I thought to myself with what could only be described as boyish excitement. Yes, my pants were working.

We made our way to his office, via elevators and pulleys. He sat down, and motioned for me to sit down - all the while trying to not stare at my pants. So after asking What my views on the current medical landscape were, the age I lost my virginity, my political affiliation, and how HMO's were impacting the future of medicine, I rolled my eyes, and told him, "Listen, I know why we are both here - don't be coy with me. I want to get in, and now.. its time party." This was where my pants came in, yet again. I ripped them off in an NBA-esque manner, and proceeded to gyrate the pelvis (with a banana hammock in place) in a counter-clockwise manner..."

The rest, they say, is history.

Point is Lily, make sure you use Tic Tacs prior to the interview.
I hope this was helpful.
 That totally sounds like something Burnsie would write.

Lily, you should go to the interview feedback site here on SDN, and read the interview feedbacks for U Miami. I'd recommend being prepared to discuss health issues; it seems like they ask a lot about that at Miami. Good luck with your interview. :luck:

I can't believe you failed to mention meeting MrBurns10. Was that not the most meaningful experience of your life? and if not, at least of the very moment we met?

Don't feel as though there is only one path to acceptance, Lily...I personally went with clockwise (counter-clockwise is for amateurs) gyrations against my travel collapseable pole and everything worked out okay. Not to mention Runner wore a sailor suit (I suppose they never specified what kind of suit you were to wear), McMD made her interview day entrance via Helo, Q mumbled "doctorate thesis" repeatedly until they admitted her, and unfrozencaveman threatened to beat her interviewer with a water polo ball if she wasn't admitted. There are many paths to acceptance, and getting the interview has gotten you 75% of the way. Good luck!

Also, Lily, I forgot to mention how important it is for you to read up on my application. My interviewer asked me tons of questions about my AMCAS and secondary, which I wasn't really expecting...and to think, I would have been completely unprepared if I had been someone else and known nothing about me. If you need help learning about me, let me know and I'll see if I can help you out.

Hey everyone.

Just had my UF interview and loved it. They said they would make some kind of decision the following monday. Now I know it's most likely that I will be put on hold, BUT I was wondering if anyone could tell me how they contact someone when they actually accept them...snail mail, email, phone? Or has it been different for different people?

...and I do realize how anxious I must be to even ask this question. Thanks.

My interviewer called me on monday, but I've heard that's atypical.

As for the UM interview-- don't hesitate to eat the donuts at the beginning.

They send a letter by snail mail. I interviewed in the beginning of February, and received my acceptance letter 🙂 the Thursday after I interviewed. I live in g'ville, so it might take a little longer depending on where you live.

I accepted at UF and turned down USF and Miami interviews. I am non-trad, have a family, own a house in g'ville, etc...so not having to move is a big plus, on top of UF being a very good school. If I were young and single I might have given more consideration to the other schools, but UF would probably have still won.

One of my interviewers contacted me, then snail mail came a couple of days later. If you're really eager and felt you hit it off with one of your interviewers, you could probably try and contact them.

Snail mail. However, if you're out of town on spring break etc, and really anxious to find out, you can arrange for the decision to be faxed (at least that was fine last year).

I was called, then they followed up with a snail-mail letter.

Oh my goodness, Burnsie....look at all of these UF students come out of the woodwork when we aren't talking about Red Tide or clock-wise vs. counter-clockwise gyrations! They must only visit to actually talk about "Florida schools!"

Good thing I'm going to UM with my fellow gyrator Yrodi!

P.S. Lily...for my UM interview, I reviewed the feedback on SDN from "medical school interview feedback and reviewed socialized healthcare (positives and negatives). My interviewed asked me a hypothetical question concerning a child and parent (I can't remember specifically what the question was)..but I started tearing up when I was answering...I thought for sure I looked like a softie. Plus, my interviewer basically tried to talk me out of being a physician to see what my arguements were for wanting to be a doc...I felt like I was being attacked and therefore thought the interview didn't go well...but I guess he thought I really wanted to be a physician regardless of the negatives because I got accepted 🙂 Point is, be yourself and you'll be fine! 😉

What about this?

So I'm clicking around the UM website instead of doing work and I find the mainpage of student stuff I guess:

http://www.mededu.miami.edu/MedEd

Could someone take a look at the first box on the right hand side there under "Items of Note" and make sure I read that correctly?
And if so, where do I send my deposit?

Hahahaha....yeah, I found this page a while ago when I was poking around the site--but most everything is PW protected. I think this contest is all the more reason you should DEFINITELY choose UM!

Which reminds me...back in elem school, we had to sing this song called "If I only had a mustache," and when we sang it for the school we held up fake mustaches everytime they said "mustache." Anyone else heard of this song, or was my school just weird?

Mustache contest?

Burnsie...since there is a waitlist for parking at UM, I've been thinking bout taking the helo and landing on the Life-Flight pad for the first few months of school....need a ride? We'll hover over your house and drop down the wire, just hook yourself on and we'll do the rest!

Yes dude-ette. I wrote it on the UM Class of 2010 thread when you asked "what do we do about parking?"

The number (AGAIN) is 305-243-6280 push option #2 (Daisy in parking) and ask to be put on the waitlist. Tell her you're starting med school in August, also tell her for "all garages." The list isn't very long currently so you should get a spot when school starts!

Ok, so this might be a really dumb question, but I don't get how this financial aid stuff works. I keep hearing everyone talk about "waiting to see what kind of financial aid package" they get. Is this just another way of saying, "I want to wait to see if I get a schoolarship?"

The reason I'm asking is b/c I just called the UM Fin Aid office, and they made it sound like (with the exception of scholarships), you will get the same amount of fin aid no matter where you attend (unless you attend some dirt cheap school). Before, I was under the impression that you were eligible to for more fin aid if you attended a private school...Maybe I misunderstood?

For instance, the way I NOW understand it, you're still going to be eligible to take out the 38,5 in stafford whether you attend UM or FSU b/c both have budgets above 38,5....and the only diff btw priv and pub (in this scenario) is that at UM you would be more likely to receive a scholarship b/c (as a priv school) UM has a little more $ to throw around. Is this correct?

Miami is a private school, and they have a lot more grant money (and scholarships) to throw around versus UF and USF. Plus, different schools might fund you for different amounts even with the same EFC. That's why you have to wait to get a financial aid package from every school. Some are just more generous than others w/ financial aid.

Well, I'm not a huge fan of flying in airplanes...but I've never directly feared flying in a military helicopter with an MS1 as the pilot, so count me in. and pick up some breakfast on the way, will ya?

I believe the Pollo Tropical in the Gables has a helicopter fly-through window.

So when you say they might "fund you for different amounts," what do you mean? federal funding? I'm sorry if I sound completely ignorant. I thought that each financial aid package was different, but the UM fin aid guy basically said I'd get the same amount of funding no matter where I went to school, unless I got a scholarship.

Also, the UM guy said that we would get our packages sometime over the summer. So if we don't get them until the summer, how can we compare packages if we have to give up all but one acceptance by May 15 (April 15 for FSU)?

Yeah, I also called and they said we wouldn't get aid packets until after May 15th. Which is so dumb! I mean, even if it ends up being all loans, you might still compare between schools that give you Perkins loans vs. institutional loans vs. private loans. It still matters to get all the info before May 15th. This could be a problem for me.

Ok, I think I understand why you are confused now. There are two different sources of money: institutional (from the school) and federal (Stafford loans from the gov.). Different schools give out different amounts of institutional aid. If you are an American citizen (and probably if you have a greencard too), you can apply for federal aid at any school using FAFSA. How you go about applying for institutional aid depends on each school's individual policy; there are different rules for every school. For example, Miami is a school that allows non-trads to apply for institutional aid as independents, which means that I don't have to submit my parents' info to be considered there for institutional aid. But since you're under age 30, you do have to give your parents' info. Otherwise, you will only be considered to receive federal aid, not institutional aid. In contrast, both UF and USF (and probably FSU too) require parental info from all students no matter how old you are if you want to be considered for institutional aid. (FAFSA for federal aid doesn't require you to submit your parents' info, no matter what age you are, as long as you are a graduate student.) Miami is a very wealthy school, and they have a lot of institutional funds in comparison to any of the state schools. So that's why someone with the same EFC might get more money from Miami than they get from a state school. The federal aid should be more or less the same everywhere, but the institutional aid won't be. Does that make more sense now?

Is the only institutional aid from Miami the 2 scholarships that you apply for?

McMD said:

No. There are the merit-based scholarships, and there is need-based aid too. This can either be loans or grants from the university.

This situation is frustruating IMO. What if a student couldn't decide between schools A, B, and C, (all of which cost about the same), and ends up choosing school B (since cost isn't a factor), but may have received more institutional aid from schools A & C. Don't schools understand that money, even if its only 5k/year, is a big factor in this process??? I wonder what kinda of EFC you need to qualify for need-based.

While we're on the subject, the fin aid guy said that about 1/3 of students receive some type of scholarship.

Deuist, Arsenic--do you guys know anything about this stuff?

Random CV Question

So I did some research during undergrad, and the guy who I worked with called me last night to tell me that his study was getting published in blah blah blah journal. Well the director of our program is against having undergrads' names being used as authors (unless it was like a project for their honors thesis or something), but the guy I worked with thought I deserved credit for it, so he called last night and told me there's a spot to acknowledge where he got funding, etc, so he wrote a sentence like this:

This study was funded by XYZ, and was made possible through the efforts of research assistants at XYZ Lab, and RunnerMD.

Now, I know this is not a big deal at all, but is there anyway I can mention this on my CV? I can't say I was an author by any means...but is there some other way I can mention that I was acknowledged in the publication?

Thanks for your help!

Yes. In your case, you should list the research you did as one of your employment experiences. Unfortunately, since you're not being added as an author, you can't list it on your CV as a publication. (Generally anyone who makes a significant contribution to the work being published is supposed to be listed as an author.)

Thanks Q!! You are always so helpful. I already have the "experience," listed but I was wondering specifically if I could mention that I was acknowledged in the publication (maybe a title like "contributor," or something along those lines...). I know its a stretch but I was just hoping I guess lol.

So....I'm sitting at work and I see a 974 number on my phone, and I'm like why is USF calling me??? And guess what...its Mr. Larkin calling me for an interview. I'm soooooooooooooooooooo stoked!!! And ridiculously suprised!!! Although, I'm prob just interviewing for a waitlist spot...hmmm.

Aaanyway, I'm sure I sounded like an idiot b/c I'm just so stunned! Ok, its almost 5 and time to go home! ttys

Congrats Runner. But please don't quit the band.

You girls are incredible - so well-prepare and informed about everything - thanks for the number McMD, and thanks for the link to that webpage, Unfrozen.

In any case, Lily - do what they said, make sure you're well read about HMO's and other features of our current healthcare, make sure you know why you want to be a doctor, etc...

Yes, let the gyrations commence! All gyrators are called to U.M.

"Salsa is a dance of slaves - it was the only time they felt free. They raised their legs like flamingos to mock their masters." - Arguably one of the worst and funniest lines in cinematic history.

At USF they RANK WAITLISTS. So you could interview on the last day and still might be high tier ranked. If that is the case you might still get into USF come May 15th.

An old friend of mine went through the process in summer 2004 and is now a first year at USF med school. He got the last possible interview date and didn't have like uber high numbers or anything. He was still high tier waitlisted and got in around the May 15th date.

Good luck. Even if you choose Miami for med school, I'd still go because USF has an awesome program as well with its diversity of clinical sites etc.

Oh ok. Sorry, I've been out of the SDN loop for a few weeks to realize what's going on, and wasn't aware of whether you were being serious or just messing around. I've had to catch up a lot on what everyone's been talking about.
