"It was a humid, mildly hot friday afternoon... the smell of the underpriveledged of Jackson, which oddly enough smelled like roasting peanuts, emanated through the air... along with car exhaust...
I wore a Suit Jacket, a nice shirt with tie... abercrombie & fitch cologne - soft, yet masculine.... and adidas gym pants (the type that button up along the legs).
My interviewer came and met with me in the master control center, which I call the "Admission's office," after a lunch that consisted of trail mix and assorted green vegetables. He looked at my pants startled..... it was there I knew I made myself stand out from the rest of the candidates... "It was working.. it was working" I thought to myself with what could only be described as boyish excitement. Yes, my pants were working.
We made our way to his office, via elevators and pulleys. He sat down, and motioned for me to sit down - all the while trying to not stare at my pants. So after asking What my views on the current medical landscape were, the age I lost my virginity, my political affiliation, and how HMO's were impacting the future of medicine, I rolled my eyes, and told him, "Listen, I know why we are both here - don't be coy with me. I want to get in, and now.. its time party." This was where my pants came in, yet again. I ripped them off in an NBA-esque manner, and proceeded to gyrate the pelvis (with a banana hammock in place) in a counter-clockwise manner..."
The rest, they say, is history.
Point is Lily, make sure you use Tic Tacs prior to the interview.
I hope this was helpful.
That totally sounds like something Burnsie would write.
I can't believe you failed to mention meeting MrBurns10. Was that not the most meaningful experience of your life? and if not, at least of the very moment we met?yrodri15 said:Lily... I can tell you what worked for me:

were you there last friday? because I was there last friday.NotAnMD said:Hey everyone.
Just had my UF interview and loved it. They said they would make some kind of decision the following monday. Now I know it's most likely that I will be put on hold, BUT I was wondering if anyone could tell me how they contact someone when they actually accept them...snail mail, email, phone? Or has it been different for different people?
...and I do realize how anxious I must be to even ask this question. Thanks.

So I'm clicking around the UM website instead of doing work and I find the mainpage of student stuff I guess:
http://www.mededu.miami.edu/MedEd
Could someone take a look at the first box on the right hand side there under "Items of Note" and make sure I read that correctly?
And if so, where do I send my deposit?
Yes dude-ette. I wrote it on the UM Class of 2010 thread when you asked "what do we do about parking?"unfrozencaveman said:Does anyone know who we're supposed to talk to about parking?

The number (AGAIN) is 305-243-6280 push option #2 (Daisy in parking) and ask to be put on the waitlist. Tell her you're starting med school in August, also tell her for "all garages." The list isn't very long currently so you should get a spot when school starts!
Your school was just weird. 🙄RunnerMD said:Hahahaha....yeah, I found this page a while ago when I was poking around the site--but most everything is PW protected. I think this contest is all the more reason you should DEFINITELY choose UM!
Which reminds me...back in elem school, we had to sing this song called "If I only had a mustache," and when we sang it for the school we held up fake mustaches everytime they said "mustache." Anyone else heard of this song, or was my school just weird?
Miami is a private school, and they have a lot more grant money (and scholarships) to throw around versus UF and USF. Plus, different schools might fund you for different amounts even with the same EFC. That's why you have to wait to get a financial aid package from every school. Some are just more generous than others w/ financial aid.RunnerMD said:Ok, so this might be a really dumb question, but I don't get how this financial aid stuff works. I keep hearing everyone talk about "waiting to see what kind of financial aid package" they get. Is this just another way of saying, "I want to wait to see if I get a schoolarship?"
The reason I'm asking is b/c I just called the UM Fin Aid office, and they made it sound like (with the exception of scholarships), you will get the same amount of fin aid no matter where you attend (unless you attend some dirt cheap school). Before, I was under the impression that you were eligible to for more fin aid if you attended a private school...Maybe I misunderstood?
For instance, the way I NOW understand it, you're still going to be eligible to take out the 38,5 in stafford whether you attend UM or FSU b/c both have budgets above 38,5....and the only diff btw priv and pub (in this scenario) is that at UM you would be more likely to receive a scholarship b/c (as a priv school) UM has a little more $ to throw around. Is this correct?
Well, I'm not a huge fan of flying in airplanes...but I've never directly feared flying in a military helicopter with an MS1 as the pilot, so count me in. and pick up some breakfast on the way, will ya?McMD said:Burnsie...since there is a waitlist for parking at UM, I've been thinking bout taking the helo and landing on the Life-Flight pad for the first few months of school....need a ride? We'll hover over your house and drop down the wire, just hook yourself on and we'll do the rest!

Ok, I think I understand why you are confused now. There are two different sources of money: institutional (from the school) and federal (Stafford loans from the gov.). Different schools give out different amounts of institutional aid. If you are an American citizen (and probably if you have a greencard too), you can apply for federal aid at any school using FAFSA. How you go about applying for institutional aid depends on each school's individual policy; there are different rules for every school. For example, Miami is a school that allows non-trads to apply for institutional aid as independents, which means that I don't have to submit my parents' info to be considered there for institutional aid. But since you're under age 30, you do have to give your parents' info. Otherwise, you will only be considered to receive federal aid, not institutional aid. In contrast, both UF and USF (and probably FSU too) require parental info from all students no matter how old you are if you want to be considered for institutional aid. (FAFSA for federal aid doesn't require you to submit your parents' info, no matter what age you are, as long as you are a graduate student.) Miami is a very wealthy school, and they have a lot of institutional funds in comparison to any of the state schools. So that's why someone with the same EFC might get more money from Miami than they get from a state school. The federal aid should be more or less the same everywhere, but the institutional aid won't be. Does that make more sense now?RunnerMD said:So when you say they might "fund you for different amounts," what do you mean? federal funding? I'm sorry if I sound completely ignorant. I thought that each financial aid package was different, but the UM fin aid guy basically said I'd get the same amount of funding no matter where I went to school, unless I got a scholarship.
Also, the UM guy said that we would get our packages sometime over the summer. So if we don't get them until the summer, how can we compare packages if we have to give up all but one acceptance by May 15 (April 15 for FSU)?
No. There are the merit-based scholarships, and there is need-based aid too. This can either be loans or grants from the university.McMD said:Is the only institutional aid from Miami the 2 scholarships that you apply for?

Yes. In your case, you should list the research you did as one of your employment experiences. Unfortunately, since you're not being added as an author, you can't list it on your CV as a publication. (Generally anyone who makes a significant contribution to the work being published is supposed to be listed as an author.)RunnerMD said:Random CV Question
So I did some research during undergrad, and the guy who I worked with called me last night to tell me that his study was getting published in blah blah blah journal. Well the director of our program is against having undergrads' names being used as authors (unless it was like a project for their honors thesis or something), but the guy I worked with thought I deserved credit for it, so he called last night and told me there's a spot to acknowledge where he got funding, etc, so he wrote a sentence like this:
This study was funded by XYZ, and was made possible through the efforts of research assistants at XYZ Lab, and RunnerMD.
Now, I know this is not a big deal at all, but is there anyway I can mention this on my CV? I can't say I was an author by any means...but is there some other way I can mention that I was acknowledged in the publication?
Thanks for your help!
