I know you're obsessed with me and all, but your new Duke avatar is moving our relationship a little too fast. Which reminds me, did you get the singing "I love you" telegram I sent to your office?

I have only been felled into the avatar change in an attempt to defend the U and the great state of Florida.

But what you're saying is the oil painting I had sent to your lab of us in a rowboat was too much, too soon?

Hey guys ive been on the UF hold list post-interview for several months (interviews in november)....any idea when this starts moving?
I'd guess you should start seeing some movement soon, ABC. I think UF is done interviewing now. Good :luck: to you. 🙂

Burnsie and caveman, you two really need to get a room. 🙄

I have the last interview date for UF on March 17th. I dont know if this means that I'm even being considered for an actual spot though...I dont know if they are still accepting so late. It would be nice to hear if anyone had heard recently though.

Oh no, that was perfect. By the way, I bought us some matching outfits for when you come to Durham. I hope you like plaid.

Apparently they accept around 30% from each interview group throughout the year right away - even the ones in March. That makes sense since they interview around ~350 for ~130 spots. After the last interview at some point in April they accept another 30% off the waitlist to make up for the 50% of people who get accepted and decide not to attend UF. In the end we were told that they end up offering around 200 acceptances out of the ~350 people they interview. I interviewed there on 3/3 and havent heard anything yet. I'll keep you posted - good luck on the interview by the way.

Where in Jax do you live? (I live in Jax Beach currently)....Go future UM docs!

I live in a house in Atlantic Beach. I love the area, its great.

Also, I'm waiting to hear from UF... I interviewed 9/16 and I am still on hold/waitlist

So how long are people staying who are going to the Miami open house in Boca? I am thinking of flying in Friday night, but haven't decided if I'll fly back sat night or sunday morning.

If I can remember from the last year, the open house ended sometime in the afternoon (I want so 3pm, but it might have gone as late as 5pm). I'm sure that your host would be willing to let you stay another night, particularly if you want to see the town.

hey everyone, so the miami status page was down earlier, and now its working again. It says my name, residency from FL and the number 25 next to it (it was NOT there before) in addition to being placed on the Ranked List, and what the list means, etc....i know its silly and perhaps a stupid question but did anyone else have a number on their status page, and is this an indication of ur spot on the ranked list?????? im freakin out even though i know miami is probably full by now and i would only interview for an alternate list, but at this point im desperate!!!! lol thanks!

I would consider staying until Sunday morning....that way you can see the town. Since I'm assuming you live pretty far if you are flying, it's probably much harder for you to just go and visit sometime. Anyways, that's my opinion. Personally, I'm only staying Friday night and leaving later on Saturday, but I only live like 3-4 hours away.

Just wondering - has anyone filled out the financial aid form from USF? There is a section that asks you to select your lender and it refers you to the financial aid manual where it states -
LENDERS TO CONSIDER
SFSL, UFSL, PLUS and ALP Loans:
AAMC – MEDLOANS http://www.aamc.org/students/medloans/start.htm
ACCESS Group http://www.accessgroup.org/students/index.htm
MedCAP http://www.medcapnofees.com
T.H.E. Loans http://www.northstar.org

So are the lenders, MEDLOANS, Access group etc... I'm confused because I thought that the lenders were like Sallie Mae or CitiBank. Anyway, thanks for your help.

I never had a number next to my name. I have no idea what that means. Sorry!

Where did you guys park when you interviewed at USF? Mr. Larkin mentioned a parking pass over the phone, but is this pass good for that area right in front of the med school library, or do we have to park in visitor parking?

I'm on the ranked list and I don't have any numbers next to my name. I wish I did though... it's better than nothing!

i found out that the number is my MCAT score (yes, i know its crappy, and im surprised that im even on the ranked list at miami lol). but my friend has her mcat score and gpa on her page, so i really dont know whats going on!!! i wonder if theyre narrowing down the list ONLY by mcat scores at this point. im not sure lol, if anyone knows please share 😀

You'll get the parking pass at the main entrance to USF. Just say that you're there for a medical school interview and you'll be fine. Then follow the map they give you to the medical school and park in the closest available spot. You can park anywhere.

I know people with a better MCAT who are still on the ranked list with no interview, and I've known people in the past with a slightly lower score then yours by 1 point, to have gotten an interview and acceptance.

So don't sweat it. What you need to make sure if your MCAT is that low and not going up, that at the very least your GPA is extremely high and your ECs show strong clinical committment.

Never mind. I did more reading and I figured it out. Thanks!

Mine too has my mcat score by my first name (no last name on the page. weird.) I can't remember if it's always been like that. Who knows. I've given up hope at this point.

Have you and frany interviewed yet, or you're still waiting to be invited? I'm assuming the latter. I've never seen my MCAT score on there either, but maybe it's just for pre-interview people? 😕

By the way for those of you who don't know, this is how you get on the ranked list.

Even if you have a 25 its ok, cuz your minimum MCAT required is 24 and 3.2 GPA for Fl. residents, 3.6 for oos candidates, and 3.5 for postbacs.

Everyone who meets that criteria gets a ranking out of 110 points.

The 110 points is split as such.....

50 pts = MCAT and GPA
20 pts = direct clinical contact with patients
10 pts = LORs
10 pts = diversity of experiences(ECs)
10 pts = consideration for those who may have had some adverse situations such as poverty or what not.

3 people rank the application based on these criteria. Then depending on ranking and what not, they'll determine whether they want to interview you. Once interviewed, you have a 3 out of 4 chance at acceptance.

That's what Dr. Hinkley explained to us at one of these premed forums last spring.

Yeah, but I don't think these guys have interviewed yet, guju.

Yeah I was just giving them the low down cuz someone there said they were surprised they got on the ranked list. So I was just explaining the logistics.

Oh BTW, if you are still waiting to hear for an interview, A-man confirmed interviews are now only for waitlist positions at Miami. I know USF is also, almost done interviewing, but you could be the last person to interview at USF and still be put on high tier list sometimes. So if you've gotten an interview there this late, don't sweat it unless it is low tier ranking waitlist.

Hey Runner,

Quick question for you. If you get into USF are you still going to pick Miami as first choice or reconsider??????

Luba Licious said:
That's an affirmative. No interview, just on the ranked list. Is everyone on that list, or do they reject people based off the formula before they're done interviewing?

Yeah everyone who meets the GPA and MCAT minimums that I posted above, will get on that ranked list. I don't know if MCAT req. is different for out of staters.

I think depending on your score as explained above, they will determine whether or not to give you an interview. Of course since they are a rolling admissions school, when you submit your application also plays a factor into things.

You might try checking the Wall of Shame thread, but I seem to remember seeing some people post rejections. They do have different standards for OOS students versus in-state. Miami gives preference to Floridians even though they're private.

Aggh-this is the question I keep asking myself! I'm in love Miami 😍. But I haven't been to the USF interview so I think it would be premature to judge USF. USF has the added bonus of being cheaper and I wouldn't have to move across the state (I like the change that comes with moving to a new city, but hate the actual process of moving with a passion).

Anyway, like I said before, its too early to decide. I hope I leave my USF interview with a definitive feeling (either love it or hate it). I don't like being confused--but that being said, I feel so blessed to have this kind of "problem."

Oh and thanks Guju for the add on MySpace. I was going to write you back but I'm trying to stay off the computer after 10.

I know--and I'll have to re-retire my UM clothing (I went to UM for my first year of undergrad, but saved all my UM stuff and have started to wear it again lol).

Burnsy- I'm coming down there to jump out of a cake later. Way to be old.

hey folks i need some advice about living in miami...and since everyone here seems to be from there, i need your wisdom.

where the hell should i live? i know NOTHING about this city (i went there once, before my interview, i was eight). if you could explain to me parts of the city that are desirable (and if possible, compare them to parts of nyc, dc, or boston, as i've lived in these cities), that would be huge.

right now i am leaning towards south beach, but is that too far away? will the commute be a bitch and a half? i've also heard a lot of apt's don't have parking in south beach, and I imagine that could be a problem. any/all advice is appreciated.

mainly i want to find a place where i can use my car as minimally as possible. apartments near the bars that Miller students most often frequent would be especially clutch, because I haven't driven a car in over five years and I imagine I wouldn't do it particularly well inebriated (not to mention all the "legal" ramifications of that).

Not to mention people in Miami drive like ****. I wouldn't want to "re-start" driving in THAT city! I already have a "car wreck fund" for when I move down there!!

I know nothing about Miami, the only time I've ACTUALLY been there was for my interview and I drove through it to get to the Keys once when I was 12. But...aren't apartments in South Beach really expensive? I would only imagine they would be.

Tiger--SoBe is pretty expensive, but I'm sure you could find a "deal" if you looked enough. I don't know a ton about living there--but I do know that Brickell is supposed to be pretty cool. The Grove (coconut grove) is awesome, but the commute sucks. Other than that, I don't know. Sorry

And while I'm posting, I was wondering if you guys might be able to help me with a question re: the UM curriculum. I understand that we have "core modules," but when we take a "module," what classes do we have? Say we're doing the musculo-skeletal system. Do we have like one 3 hour lecture/day or something that covers all aspects of this system? Or do we have a bunch of basic classes (e.g. anatomy, biochem, etc) and each class is then focused on the musculo-skeletal system? I'm just trying to get a basic idea of how day to day classes will go. (I know this is a pretty basic question, but I guess I never thought about it till now). Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the advice thus far. I'm not as worried about cost b/c taking time off to work makes things a bit more affordable...and I figure I'm going to into debt anyway, what's a few more thou to live at the beach for four years. 😎 I'm more concerned about the perils of commuting - I've never experienced such horrors before!! :scared:

Hey- the beach is the way to go, honestly. I'll post more when I get out of this mtg... Best commute, best lifestyle, hands down. More to come.

Happy Bday Burnsie...if it's really your bday!

Q...how far is your commute? I'm thinking bout doing the same. Not sure though. 😕

can folks tell me about the typical student body at uf-com? in another, older, thread, someone lamented the significant presence of "immature" students there. is this true?

i know many folks who went there for undergrad and i lived in gainesville for one summer. i think it's fair to say that sports and party-frats/sororities seem to have the dominant presence in the undergrad social life. does this carry over into the med school? and if so, is this what another poster may have meant by the "immature" characterization?

I know a lot of people at UF Med and would say that the characterization is pretty accurate from the people I know. A lot of people go there because of its reputation as a party school/love for football. I know a lot of UF undergrad alums who stay on to "continue the glory years" if you will and others who transfer to other med schools precisely because they don't want to be in that environment anymore.

While I'm sure not all of the students are "immature," there are a significant number of students for whom the appeal of a more undergraduate-like college experience chalk full of football, beer, and loose (wo)men draws them to UF. Hell, I should know - I'm one of them 😉 (but probably won't be going to UF, for other reasons).

Happy Birthday, and as my boss is fond of telling me every friday, "Don't do anything that might potentially get you arrested."

Quick Question about UF admissions...

Do you know if we are given a score based on our interview that would remain with our application. The reason I ask is because I am now on hold and I remember Robyn saying that the waitlist they come up with in April is "unranked". I felt like my interviews went really well and I was hoping that they could play a roll in a potentiial acceptance.

Thanks
