You can get a new for Rolex for a reasonable amount (4600€) so i guess second hand ones must be cheap:

A lot of good brands have entry level steel watches that aren't too expensive:

Unfortunately i can't say that 4,600Euro or $6,200US is cheap. but I guess when other watches are $20K or more then that's cheap.

I think am going to wait though and buy a watch once I am making an attending salary. It's not the first thing in the world I need, and having to moving to a new city in a few months, there will be plenty of things i'll need to buy rather than spending the $6K on a watch which i don't really need and would be too afraid of scratching it to wear it to work.

This is the IWC I really like however, I think it's an older model and I couldn't find it in a store to take a look at.

Most serious watch guys buy second-hand all the time. They're just very, very careful about who they buy from, and condition is everything.

Tourneau is generally overpriced. There's no way a stainless/white dial Daytona was listed there for $2,000. Even older models will typically go for upwards of $6-$8K (http://www.bernardwatch.com/list.cfm?BrandKey=RLX&startRow=51). Are you sure it wasn't a Tudor? They're made by Rolex using Rolex cases, but non-Rolex movements. Some of them (such as the "Tiger" chrono) resemble the Daytona.

You'd probably have a nicer watch than most attendings if you wore anything costing more than a few hundred dollars. A Rolex is never subtle.

I ended up calling the store.. the watch was $15,900.. either the lady told me the wrong price or when I looked at the price tag i saw a serial number or something...

Hello,

In my group I am the only one wearing cheap watches. Everyone else has Rolex, Omega, Breitling, or some other expensive brands that I don't even know. The exception is the very young techies, who don't wear watches: they use their cell phones to tell time. And many nurses wear more expensive watches than the ones I wear.

Long time ago I had a very beautiful Omega, which I used for several years, but it didn't keep time very accurately, it was difficult to adjust, it was a nightmare to change the time when Daylight Saving Time started and ended, and when it needed repairs it was very hard to find the proper parts. Finally I gave it up.

You also have to take into account that every time you send one of those expensive watches for cleaning, oiling and replacing the seals, it will cost you between 600 and 1000 dollars.
