I will be a first year this fall and I wanna get a head start on some course work. Do you think going over some college upper division physio and anatomy will help me during my first semester? Thanks

Hello Justin,

That is a good idea. I would emphasize on physiology and not as much on anatomy. Last fall, we had a pop quiz on the first day of biosystem. Although the questions were fundamental and the score was eventually counted as extra credit, it is important that you do well and get off to a good start.

I would suggest that you start to learn your top 100 drugs but don't place too much emphasis on the dosage, just the generic/brand name and the indication. Just knowing the range of the dosage is fine. If you have not received the top 200 drug list from Dr. Baron, please see the link below. I hope this helps. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

has anyone actually received the list? I have an old one from a friend, but still did not get anything in mail....

Drugs...there are SO MANY drugs out there...WOW.

I have a Pharm Tech book and it's really mind boggling. I've written index cards for every drug they describe in depth and oh man...it's great. I'm telling you pre-pharm kids. The dollar store is the greatest place for index cards. Two packs for $1.

When can we expect to get the list in the mail? How much detail do we have to know about each drug?

The GENERIC NAME, THERAPEUTIC CLASSIFICATION, TYPICAL USE OR INDICATION, and DOSAGE FORMS, STRENGTHS, DIRECTIONS of each drug.

Just wondering, has anyone received the top 200 drug list from USC yet or anything from the financial aid office?

tanyas,

i've looked at the site you posted, but my financial aid info hasn't changed since mid-april. is that the case with you? have you received a financial aid summary (awards, loans, etc) already? thanks.

steve

steve,
go under financial aid summary on oasis - mine already shows the awards.

i called the financial aid office a couple of weeks ago and the dood said that offer letters will be mailed out sometime mid july...i jsut checked oasis and mine isn't showing up as well. in the meantime, make sure you check your status to see whether or not you're missing documents.

as far as the drug list, i haven't received it yet either.

are any of you going to apply for the dual degree programs at usc? im currently studying for the gmat to get into the MBA program. it really sucks that we have to apply to these programs by nov. 15 in our FIRST semester at usc, i thought id be able to enjoy my "last" summer a little bit more.

hey steve,
i am planning on applying to the pharmD/phD program but according to both the grad office and Jim granderson, i cant apply until my second year. is the November deadline just for the MBA program because i am ready to apply now. i missed both welcome receptions so i know nothing else about the program.

Hey guys,

Not to hijack the thread...but I was thinking that maybe we could make this into a "USC class of 2008 thread" or something where we keep eachother posted on things we find out or may need to know or just to update peeps on stuff going on with us. Sound like a good idea? NO/YES?! Thought it would be a good idea since there are so many SC related threads 🙂

biophiliac1,
the USC class of 2008 thread sounds like a great idea. as for a new update, i just called the finaid person and she said that they are still processing and compiling awards/loan packages. she said to wait up to 2 more weeks, ughh, the waiting game i hate it.

dloi,
at the welcome reception they passed out a salmon-colored packet with info on all the dual degree programs offered at USC. most of the programs, including the MBA, want you to apply before Nov.1. the only one, according to the packet, that specifically allows you to apply during second year is the M.S. in Regulatory Science. also, i looked thru the usc pharmacy brochure (lot of green in front, came with acceptance letter) and it states that ph.d/pharm.d candidates should apply as early as possible, whatever that means. the website also has deadlines for the 3 ph.d/pharm.d degree programs also, you might want to check that out.

if you've got the okay to apply later from both Jim and the GRAD school, im sure that is what they want. okay, gotta go back to studying for the gmat.

hey synergisticsteve,
You're interested in the MBA program. Cool!! I'm thinking of doing Public Health. Eventually I wanna do something that relates to public health with my pharmD and besides I've always wanted to do public health. Just seems like a cool field. So did me and Dloi miss alot by not going to the welcome reception? I couldn't go because I have class 🙁. Any of you guys planning on joining a fraternity? 🙂 Or are you interested in going to football games? I could use a football game buddy 😀

hey biophiliac..i think we did miss out on alot from the sound of it! i actually called the office asking if they could just mail me all the packets and stuff that i didnt get but they said they did not give out anything...i think i will bug them tomorrow to get the dual degree program stuff because it sounds important!

Hey Dloi,

Congrats. Did you get the immunization requirement forms along with your acceptance package? Also, don't forget to apply for parking.

hey biophiliac, you didn't miss too much by not going to the welcome reception. i think there was an earlier thread about this, but basically they went over financial aid documents, had student/faculty speakers talk about organizations/courseload, broke up into small groups with some current students to talk about housing/how to deal with courseload/internships/etc, and then we got to eat and socialize. i am interested in joining a fraternity but im not sure about joining first semester, what about you? being a football game buddy sounds like a good idea too!

dloi, they did pass out stuff during the reception but i dont think it was that important. if you do decide to call them again, ask them about the yellow folder they passed out, it had the dual degree packet in there, as well as a list of new students attending. however, the info on the dual degree packet looks like it was just lifted off of the webpage.

i think the immunization packet came separate from the acceptance packet, it was sent from the health service office in feb (i got my acceptance in dec). if anyone is missing it, i would call the eric cohen student health center at 1-323-442-5980 to get one as soon as possible, the deadline to RETURN the forms is 8/1/04. you can also email them at [email protected], but i tried this method when i had a question on titers and it took them about a week to respond back.

off to study the gmat and go to disneyland this afternoon....yeah!

if you have questions about immunizations, just call the center directly - they answered my questions right away. Perhaps it is faster than waiting for an e-mail response.

hey guys,
I just checked my mail and the Top 200 Drugs just came in! Good luck studying!

i just got mine today!

hey synergisticsteve do i have a football buddy?! huh huh 😛 i love going to football games especially for a school that actually wins games. about the fraternity thing i have an interest in it but like you i don't think i will join until after first term just so i can get a feel for all of them. you don't wanna join something you find out later that you don't wanna be a part of.

I'm having the hardest time with the immunization stuff as far as getting "quantitative" titers. My doc. has given me the positive/negative twice!!! even after i explicitly told the advice nurse to leave a message explaining it that i need numbers and she verbatim told me what she was gonna tell the doctor. i don't know!!! i really don't like getting my blood drawn so i hope during this third run that they do it right. we shall see...

hey biophiliac, you'll be glad to hear that although i was an ucla bruin, i have never been to any of their football games. even in high school, my #1 choice for undergrad was usc, but the $ kept me from going that route. anyhow, i've been dying to go to a usc/ucla game, maybe we can get a few of our classmates to come along too. BTW, where did you do your undergrad?

i can't believe you did your immu's twice...i had a hard enough time with the blood draws they did 2 weeks ago. your post reminded me that i've got to call my doctor and get my immu papers all checked off. hope your third time is a charm!

I am up for USC/UCLA game.....UCLA undergrad, now USC - should be interesting....

so i have a question about parking. since i just barely got accepted, the only lot i was able to get was the SSP lot rather than the 71. How far exactly is the ssp lot from the pharmacy building? it looked a little far in the map. how much time should i give myself to walk to the pharmacy building?

Since SSP is near Alcazar St. and there's an incline from the parking lot to the pharmacy building, I'd give myself 5-10 min leeway. Unless you're a self-proclaimed stairmaster champion, then maybe only 3-4 min =)

Since we have all received our drug list, does everyone want to split the first 100 drugs between the 8 of us (justin od, shoplifter, pandahuamei, tanyas, dloi, dunamis22, calgal03, biophiliac1, and myself)??? Or better yet, does anyone have access to last years list? Come on, lets get a network going on here guys! NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK, im sure we'll be hearing that for the next 4 years.

alright, networking it is...I have some of them done...pm me

sounds good to me. just let me know which ones to do

good idea steve...i'm in, although last year's list would be extremely nice 🙂

i'm going on vacation for the next 2 weeks so i probably won't be able to start until i get back..hopefully thats ok with you guys.

Since only three of us will be able to start on the list immediately...i guess we should split the 100 between the 3 of us (tanyas, dloi, myself). latestarters (dunamis22 and others) can take a few from the 3 of us, or start on 101-200 for our Spring quiz.

tanyas - #1-33 (since you've started already, i assumed you'd probably start from the top)

myself - #34-67

dloi - #68-100

What about a deadline? I'm thinking in two weeks, SATURDAY July 24th, since that will give us about one month before the actual quiz and 3 weeks before orientation to memorize. Let me know if these terms are okay with everyone!

updated list

tanyas #1-25

myself #26-50

dloi #51-75

lr pharm #76-100

Hi, guys! I will go ahead and do 76-100 asap 🙂. This is great . . . this way we can focus on learning them rather than gathering the info! 👍 I really look forward to meeting all of you in the Fall! 😉

Oh, BTW, i recommend that each of us post periodic progress reports (every 2 or 3 days, ex. #1-15 completed) on our drug list. It will make it a lot easier for me to split off segments for the people who join our group late. THANKS!

SynergeticSteve, I will definitely update you on my progress. I have just started my portion 🙂 . . . I am devoting tomorrow, Monday, and Tuesday for it (if it even takes that long). I will check a couple sources to make sure the info is accurate. 😉 I have a suggestion . . . since we each have only 25 drugs, do you guys want to make our "deadline" sooner?

Hi, I will be attending USC in the fall as well. When and where did u all get the list of drugs?

N/m my previous message. Just checked my mail and got the list. Guess I'll be working on it too. I have a lot of time on my hands....can I be a part of your cooperative learning? 😀

I am telling Dr. Baron on you guys

That is the spirit! How well you do on the drug exam really dictates your grade for Dr. Baron session which counts for 20% of your total Pharmacy Practice grade (5 unit course). So take it seriously 👍

I suggest that you guys catalogize the drugs according to their therapeutic classificaton. For example Amoxil and Cipro should be catalogized together since they are antibiotic.

- AMOXIL AMOXICILLIN TRIHYDRATE Antibiotic/Penicillin Bacterial infections
- CIPRO CIPROFLOXACIN HCL Antibiotic/Fluoroquinolone Bacterial infections

It will really help you guys memorize the drugs much faster. Do not place too much emphasis on the dosage, you just need to know the range for the top 100 drugs.

hey synergisticsteve i can't believe you never went to an sc/ucla game!!! i did they were fun. i even got a sports package for one season. it was totally worth it!!! btw i went to ucla and i, like you, wanted to go to usc. heh 🙂 did your friends at ucla get on you for that. mine did!! in fact some of my friends think i am now a traitor  but it's all in fun.
i don't have my top drugs list already...wish i could've joined you guys in the division. maybe for the second half? i'm guessing it is divided into two (i wouldn't know since i don't have mine yet). do we have to know it by first week or something??!!! yikes if we do since i have little extra time on my hands until a week before school starts and even then i really don't!!! are there a grip of people from ucla that go to usc because it sure seems like it. i remember during my interview i recognized several faces even people i have talked to before who were interviewing people. it was kinda weird. i expected that to happen and i told a friend of mine and she was like i doubt that will happen. anyway...laters

It says in the packet that we don't have to worry about the Auxiliary Label column, we'll learn about that in our externships. It's also not on the exam in August.
