Any captains that entered service between 2009-2011 want to discuss the force reduction. New numbers came out saying they would be getting rid of 130 of 250 of us 47G3B's, C's, and vanillas. My understanding is that volunteering out does not forgive HPSP commitment and recoupment of a portion of tuition paid out would occur. Anyone heard anything different? Does anyone that's out of dental school even look at these forums?

It appears Air Force legal is looking at HPSP right now. But yeah, the latest is that the school money would be recouped. Funny, the Air Force would pay you VSP to leave, then tax the ever living crap out of the money they give you, and then they would recoup whatever amount you owe them for not completing your HPSP commitment. I guess you could potentially walk away even. Maybe.

If the Chair Force does not work out...there is always the Army.

I'm thinking most air force dentists won't want to downgrade like that. Also, I just looked at the info related to vsp and it looks like the 2009-2011 year groups do not qualify for it.

You're right ARguy, considering some of the poor Army guys I've seen come into our clinics and the work I've had to fix and basic education I've had to provide I'd think you army guys could take a few pointers and spend a little more time at your dental chairs like us in the "chair" force. But not to get off topic I don't think there will be too many jumping at voluntary separation if they still have a commitment for HPSP and uncle sams going to want to recoup. Think it might be tough to get that 130 with voluntary alone.

Well if you look closely, the 2009 year group would have no commitment left this summer even if they took the 4 year hpsp and did an aegd-1. So every one of them who did not specialize could be cut. The 2010 year group would be in the same boat for those who took a 2 or 3 year hpsp and an aegd-1. Their commitment is also up this summer. The 2010 year group who took a 4 year hpsp and an aegd-1 are obligated until 2015. The 2011 year group would only be uncommitted this summer if they took a 2 or 3 year hpsp and did not do an aegd-1. Is that going to be enough people to make the 130? Could be. But the last number I heard from sg details was 67, and that is definitely doable from this group. The saddest thing of all though, in my opinion is that they will be kicking out several people who don't want to leave. Meanwhile there are plenty of volunteers with a year or two left on their commitments. They waived ots commitments, af academy commitments, bonus commitments, gave 4-year rotc recipients free educations but so far are unable or unwilling to do the same for hpsp recipients.

Been talking about this at work for weeks. If they can't get legal authority to waive the HPSP contracts there are going to be a lot of unhappy people out there.
