Friday thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It was really nice to go to my son's HS soccer game yesterday. While the crowd was sparse (2 fans per player and no visiting team fans), it was the first time since March that I felt part of a physical community. It was a bit weird to see people for the first time in awhile and not be able to give a hug (and I'm NOT a big hugger). It was nice to see the students be part of something, while also respecting the need to be safe (wearing masks on the field; bumping elbows) and following the new rules of the game ( even though it seemed like field hockey with all the whistles!). There's a way through this if people would just be safe and respectful.

As far as this weekends libations, I picked up a bottle of Jefferson's, which was very drinkable. For the price (~35 bucks) I think I'd just go with something like Buffalo Trace or save a few bucks and just get some Maker's. Currently drinking a "Manhattan" made with the Jeffersons and some Aperol (I ran out of Vermouth). Also got some Downeast Cider Donut- gimmicky but actually pretty good- and some Relic Brewery Octoberfest. Overall, a decent weekend.

Knocked out some IME work in the morning and now I'm trying to clear some lingering follow-up & feedback notes. I was supposed to work 6-8hr on Sunday to finish up an IME, but now I can skip it (pending a settlement). I need to take my car in to get serviced, but other than that it is hammock time and watching some sports.

Thanks for the validation! I work in the VA so we don't have a lot of flexibility there unfortunately. We aren't doing too many in person appts but groups are still going and we aren't being allowed to say, no, you aren't coming in person. Still waiting to hear if we are seeing testing patients (since that has to be in person).
Omg really?! We're offering very very limited services but in person groups are a thousand percent banned here. How irresponsible of your leadership.

Has anyone watched The Haunting of Bly Manor? I loved Hill House and will probably check that out this weekend.

You guys are such fancy drinkers. Half of the things you guys talk about, I have never heard of. Except Maker's that @ClinicalABA mentioned. I'm more of a peach Crown and sweet tea type of person. Maybe since I haven't been through doctoral training yet, I have developed the sophisticated doctoral alcohol-appreciating palate yet

Just after you graduate, they take you to a back room, plug you into one of those matrix chairs, and install how_to_enjoy_whisk(e)y.exe

As they say down in your neck of the woods, "them dogs'll hunt!"

Drink what you like. I like bourbon and fancy beer, but also boxed wine and 'Gansetts.

LOL even being from here I had NO idea what you just said, I had to Google it. Texas is a really weird place...
I used to love wine, all wines, until I had too many wines in a night haha. Wine hangovers are THE worst to me.

I love cheap beer, Truly, and basically anything that's free.

My fiancé loves Truly. I really like those Bud Light fizzy things (like Truly), whatever they are called.

I was always that weird 21-year-old who only drank Porters/Stouts/IPAs and ordered scotch neat at the bar. Sometimes you just like what you like.

PsyDr life lesson that no one asked for:

As you get older, a couple things happen. You make more money. Cheap booze starts hitting you like a freight train. You start getting in a routine that makes it harder to sleep in. Social expectations change, in the USA.

The people who have kids start waking up at the gluteal cleft of dawn. Because kids are nightmares if not entertained, the breeders do stuff which they post on social media. The childless then start wanting to do similarly productive stuff . Then they develop some controlled proxies of debauchery, that follow social sanctions. Usually one SO uses this to tell themself that they are still fun. (Side note: this behavior is reminiscent of how American dads are weirdly protective of their daughters sexuality). 2 people drinking 2 bottles of wine at a nice restaurant =okay. One dude drinking 6 PBRs at hipster dive= not okay. Drinking a glass of scotch in a steuben glass= okay. Drinking shots of jaeger in the kitchen= not okay. Why? I dunno. Literally same alcohol consumption. Think I'm wrong? Go get a baby. Put it one of those baby holder thingsthat strap them to the front of your chest. Walk into a craft brewery in the middle of the day. Tell me if anyone raises an eyebrow. Now try that exact same routine in a super seedy bar. Everyone would lose their minds.

So you drink some more expensive stuff, which you have the money for. You don’t get hangovers. People are happy you met some social expectations.

@PsyDr I feel like your wise words apply to so many other "social expectations" and not just drinking 🙂
Also, can we get a sticky with PsyDr's life-lessons? Maybe we can turn them into a booklet or something to give as an award for posters :cigar:

I was going to comment on how I have developed a taste for red wine and whiskey nowadays due to increase in my monies (turns out I just don't like cheap easily available red wine and whiskey) and a decrease in my alcohol consumption due to age and my general routine, but that was much more entertaining.

YES! THIS! One of my favorite things about SDN has been @PsyDr 's words of wisdom posts.

gluteal cleft of dawn

 your choice of words are the best!

Aww. I miss being able to put my son in the papoose and take him places. I really took to baby wearing. It was my favorite.
I second this. I was a fantastic mom of infants & young'uns. Tweens and teens, not so much (at least from a mastery standpoint, even though I'm perpetually striving to be 'good enough'). My kids are way too opinionated, and I am consistently invoking W.C. Fields' philosophy ("children should be seen and not heard"), to no avail.

You could take this as evidence that you've done a good job as a parent of tweens/teens.

I appreciate this. Thank you. 🙂

(I say, as both a psychologist and parent, I don't always get it right, but I definitely know when I'm getting in wrong. I also find it privately amusing when my patients/clients sometimes suggest that I personally may not have my own relationship or martial problems. #IfTheyOnlyKnew)

Of course we don't have relationship problems. Just like physicians have no health problems, all investment advisors are multimillionaires who don't need jobs, and lawyers never get into any legal trouble. 🤣

Looking for a new hobby/skill to try to pick up in some free time. Whatcha got, SDN?

If you don’t yet play an instrument, learn one. Piano and guitar are the most versatile. If you don’t already own a piano or wish to invest in one, go with a cheap/rental guitar.

Guitar is definitely on the short-list, any non-traditional skills/hobbies people can think of?

I've been wanting to pickup guitar a bit more and learn some basic leatherworking. If you're really bored, you're welcome to come over to my place and finish the pantry I started redoing and need to finish. My wife will love you. It will be a bit of a drive to the east coast though.

Furniture reupholstery?

New interest of mine, waiting for classes to start back up so I can dive into this.

Speaking of redoing pantries, I want to Marie Kondo my home (but would need a 2-week staycation to get the entire place done properly). We're going to decorate for Halloween this weekend.

We've examined the CDC guidelines for Halloween, and I've opted to get a 6-inch wide, 6-foot long PVC pipe, from which we'll sit at the top of our front steps and slide the wrapped candy (with additional disinfected wrappers) down into kids' bags. :vamp: I don't want to encourage crowding but I love Halloween....so will make every effort to have fun, safely during our Global Pandemic.

I love Fridays with all my heart.

P.S. Will think of hobbies, but the only one on my list to learn to knit. I love embroidery and sewing (I was a founding member of Virginia Junior Needlewomen's Guild when I was a girl), but have never knit.

Geohunting or geocaching?
Jelly/jam making
Calligraphy
Jewelry making
Website coding (if you don’t already have a site for your PP)
TikTok your own videos  Or YouTube channel (you and the wife could be the next Holder family lol)

Not sure if I'm into geocaching and the like. I like hiking and outdoors stuff, just don't want to hunt around while I do it 🙂

I have started making hot sauces with peppers that I am growing, and moved indoors so I can do it year round. I could teach myself coding again, haven't done much of it since I was in grad school. I'm forgoing a website, I'll be as busy as I want to be without one at the moment.

I'm a Luddite, so I can't bring myself to start making videos.

Geocaching’s still around? Well, what’d ya know.

Are you fermenting the peppers or just cooking and blending them?

Not sure if this is too similar to the hunting around aspect of geocaching, but a strong background in orienteering is an amazing way to unlock a ton of new (and far less busy) outdoor areas to explore. It's quickly become one of my favorite ways to be outside.

Otherwise, I support getting into more physical tasks (leatherworking, metalworking), board game development, sewing (making a bag that I still use was a really cool experience), birding or plant ID

^ooh yes. NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is in November!

When I lived on the West Coast, one of my good friends was a board game designer. It was always fun playtesting things that weren't out yet and maybe having a hand in changing the game rules and mechanics.

So far just cooking, but I did recently buy some lids for my mason jars with airlocks for fermenting. Next batch.

Fly tying and/or lure carving

This one is going on the short list.

Read some creative writing books and start writing a novel.

I used to do a lot of creative writing, prior to grad school. Then scientific writing and publishing cannibalized some of creative writing skills. Maybe it's time to build it back up.

If the admissions crisis taught us anything, it's that you can really wrack up the points if you find a niche that no one cares about.

Read everything in a specific cannon, and make obscure references to amuse yourself. Learn another language. Buy Escoffier's book, and try to make the mother sauces from scratch (good luck roasting the bones). Run long distances. Get a certification in glider planes. Get a donorcylce license. Learn krav maga: Israel's collection of cheap shots. Take fencing classes. Pick up yoga. Find niche genres of media, and then consume them all. Learn about wine, because for some reason that's a thing. Get really good at something ridiculous and never mention it until you do it (e.g., shooting/side saddle reloading, lock picking, moon walk, making a brassiere out of cloth napkins). Stock market stuff, with enough skin in the game for you to care, but not enough to destroy you. Start anonymously pranking another professional who is super uptight. Start worrying if you get to the point where you learn about sending crab lice via mail. Pretend you’re a documentarian, go to stupid events like monster truck rallies, and take photos of the people.
