I'm submitting a first author paper to cell....but its so far into the app cycle...quite upset about the timing...

how do you deal with sth like this (non academic update) that you want adcoms to know..since it sounds like the fall update is only for grades?

Every interview I have been on has given an opportunity to update your file with important information like this, so you will be able to at any future interviews. Also, e-mailing (as already suggested) the admissions director would be fine at every school I am familiar with.
