F's and D's are our friends!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have one D and am applying this coming cycle...Pulled the GPA up to a 3.56 though so still confident! 🙂 Willing to bet the damn grade will get brought up numerous times however this fall. 🙂

I had some of those... surely they were long time (ago 6-8 year ago)
But it is still possible to get in.

lets go, spill it people

Sounds like you had a few. How do you expect people to "spill it" if you don't?

I had 7 F's (2 in Physics 1), 4 W's (1 in Physics 1), and apparently only 1 D (!!! I'm shocked - I really did not deserve to pass that class though). I guess when I failed, I went all out, none of that 1.0 crap. And yes, I really did take Physics 1 four times.

AACOMAS's policy on retakes really helped, obviously.

I had those but from many, many years ago and most schools forgave 😀 And I agree with the other poster, I think you should spill the beans before asking others too...

okay okay... One D and one F...for good reason tho 🙂

Are we counting only science courses or all courses? If so, only one D in a science course. Never had an F. 3 D's total, 2 in history. (I hate history)

Of course, I didn't get in either. As I have been preaching for the past several weeks, the "replacement" aspect of AACOMAS is a gimmick; it doesn't really change anything, as adcoms still see your old grades.

Clearly not a gimmick if people can get 7 F's and still get in! It sure saved me from a D in O-chem2.

There's nothing wrong with a few scrapes in your transcripts, shows character ( I guess 😳 ).

But let us not forget that the greatest enemy to fulfilling your potential is success!

Think about it! :meanie:

I had one D in Organic Chemistry I lecture, but retook it for an A. I've never had an F. Just graduated this month so no knocking on wood needed. 🙂

I don't know anyone with 7 F's who got in, do you? A think, as the pattern above demonstrates, there are also circumstances regarding this, such as the grades are several years old or the people have gone on to do graduate-level work.

Well... getting a D in a pre-req is not recommended.

Even though I had a couple of Ds and one F, I always got excellent marks in pre-reqs.

Good thread to start up.

Wonder how many times it will be referenced in a DO vs MD flame war.

0 (only 1 C) and 2 waitlists, no acceptances yet. I guess they are our friends. 😳

Obviously not much thought went into this statement. Of course the adcoms see your old grades, but you will have a much better chance of getting a secondary with Osteo vs. Allo if you have "replaced" some grades. Take me for instance when I was 18-19 I did really ****ty in school, I didn't apply myself. Since I have been back to school after taking a couple of years off I have rocked every class (roughly a 3.9 since I have been back) while taking heavy course loads 17-19.5 and working full time (plus working out 6 days a week). I have aced every pre req class and am going strong, I'll be applying next june so I have not taken my MCAT yet but I am very confident about it.

I highly doubt that the semester I set the record and recorded 7 F's (yes that is not a typo 7 F's) is going to hurt me once I get a chance to explain it when I get secondaries. I took over all the classes I just flat out stopped attending and got A's, with 2 exceptions: Film appreciation and Intro to Theatre (please no jokes, I couldn't even tell you why I took them other than I was a slacker back then). I guess you can ace all your pre reqs, core classes, and most electives but if you bomb film appreciation then you certainly do not have the aptitude to become a doctor.

BTW I have about a .4 difference in my gpa between allo and osteo so I wouldn't even get looked at by allo's even with a sick upward trend. Osteo will look at my app and be able to better put my situation in perspective. It is not hard to figure out that I matured, especially after they my PS. Like I said before at this point I can get a 45 on the MCAT and would probably still not be able to get into allo but that's ok with me.

so far you're the first, as you always are, to jump right in and start the flame...

ima call u FIRE STARTER from now on 😉

i got one F, in partial differential equations. it was rather undeserved however, there were only 2 grades - the mid term and the final. the mid term i get a 91%, the final i was sick and i guess royally messed up because the prof gave me a grade of F for the semester. i asked to see the test and find out what happend and tried to explain my extenuating circumstances even with a doctors note in hand for strep throat, but no go... 👎 👎

what do you mean allo schools will completley overlook you? Ive had friends who have failed a ton of classes and still got in to allopathic med schools. Also check out www.mdapplicants.com..... you will be surprised at some of the GPAs of those that got into allo schools.

Of course it did, because I have been through the process already.

Anyone with a pulse can get a secondary from a DO school. Getting a secondary does not get you an acceptance, interviews get you an acceptance, and members of an adcom have access to the grades that are supposedly replaced. The system may help you survive the "weed out" process for secondaries (most schools don't have one to begin with, or have the min requirements set to well below 3.0) but the replacement system is not going to save your record from being scrutinized by the members of an admissions board.

In your case, any acceptance will be based upon the upward trend in your grades and the post-maturation performance in your academics; not the fact that grades will be replaced. You say yourself adcoms will see your upward trend, indicating that you yourself know they are still going to look at classes that are replaced!

It's a gimmick to get more people to apply and to rack up more money for the system and schools.

Actually most DO schools require a minimum of a 2.75 GPA to send you a secondary.

On the other hand, all Texas public schools (MD and DO through TMDSAS) automatically have you fill out a secondary before even viewing your application.

Yes, which is stupidly easy to get, hence my, "need to have a pulse" comment.

You'd be surprised how many SDN users don't have this.

However, if you would like to insult them by saying they are both stupid and don't have a pulse, that's your prerogative. I don't really care either way.

I don't know. I am an MD and I got a "D" in biostatistics and two "W"s! 😱. It is how you frame it, not what you got...

I have 30 semester hours of big fat F... yes 0.00.
But I also have 152 hours of big fat A...
If you screw up early on you can always dust yourself off and try again.
I'm still a little dusty but i got a scholarship, and if i can do it any circus monkey can too.

Are you saying you have 10 F's on your transcripts?

yes that is exactly what I am saying. 10 classes up 10 classes down.
