What's up with this thread? No posts for a who month? I'm inteviewing Jan/20th. Congratulations!!! to all that have been accepted. How many of you will definitely be at FSU next year. It is my first choice and I hope I see some of you there!

Cheers!

Hahaha--and so we meet again. I saw this thread bumped up and was wondering if it might have been you that had posted!

I was just thinking of something else you might want to be aware of--FSU seems to be notoriously difficult to get a hold of (esp when you REALLY want to-->read over some of the posts in this thread and the Florida thread re: FSU). That was one of the few things that really bothered me. For instance, I had a question that I've e-mailed them about twice. Its been about 7-8 weeks since I did that, and i have yet to hear back.

I've had that experience once and because of it I abandoned the email communication with them or any other school for that matter. I always call and that seems to work. At this point there is not much to communicate, I'll have my interview friday and they will tell me later, hopefully the week after as they say. To all of you trying to contact them, call!

Cheers

Hey guys! What's up the the FSU forum. We have to keep it alive, at least untill the entire class 2010 has been established. I interview las week and should be receiving an answer next week. Let's go Noles! I can't wait to go to the basketball games there, they have a pretty good team. Who has been accepted/interview?

Good luck to everyone and for those of you coming to FSU next year I hope to see you all there!!!!

Zepp 🙂

I was accepted, my interview was also on 9/16 (for those of you who mentioned 9/16 earler, there was only 4 of us that day). Anyways, don't get scared if you don't hear from them the week after your interview. What they told us in our interview was that they would call the next Wed/Thursday with their decision. This year they have a new dean and it seems they have abandoned the phone-calls and went to the written decisions, so if you hear from a student (accepted last year or prior) that says you'll hear the next week...don't get scared if you don't!

I'm giving up my spot at FSU this week (have to get around to typing up a letter), so anyone on the hold list will probably get bumped up! I hear the applicants tripled from last year, Go FSU!

I interviewed with Zeppy-Zepp on Friday. Actually the admissions coordinator told us that we would hear back from them for sure, on next Wednesday, the 1st. She said if we get a phone call then it's for an acceptance. But if we get an email it's for the waiting list or a rejection.

Congrats on your acceptance to FSU and Tulane! Good luck to you at Tulane :luck: ...
The applicants for FSU did triple. But they are accepting more students this year too. And I definitely hope that I am one of them. Go Noles! 👍

Hi Truly,

Just a word of caution, we were also told that we would hear back from them "for sure," on a certain afternoon, and at the LATEST, the following morning. Aaaand that time period came, and went, with no phone call or e-mail. I've heard this from several other applicants as well. I would just call them myself if I were you (and I hadn't heard from them--that's what I did!)

We were also told the same thing..."you'll hear from us next week on this day, blah blah blah"...and didn't....I got a written acceptance on Oct.15th (2 months AFTER the interview) bc med schools can't give out written acceptances until that day...so I was freaking out for 2 months just because they told us wrong!

Thanks Truly for your "congratulations"...but now I'm thinking about going to UMiami. I just found out that Charity hospital is closed forever and I'm scared of going to Tulane now. But don't worry, I'm withdrawing from FSU whichever school I decide to go to (forgot to take Biochem this semester...OOPS!)...so my spot will still be available once I send in my letter!

Good Luck to everyone!...and GO NOLES!!

hello guys
I interviewed back in september and heard like Oct. 20. But if you interview now- I have friends that found out two weeks later. It is such a great school-absolutely gorgeous. I wish you luck. THe interview is very laid back- I had a good time 😉

To those of you who have gotten acceptances or interviews at FSU, would you mind posting your stats? It would be a great help, thanks! 🙂

ok. so if i haven't heard from FSU by next wednesday, should i give them a call on thursday or wait a little while?

I would just call b/c it cant hurt you. FSU will prob tell you when you call.

congrats to everyone who got in here....I'm actually graduating from FSU in April and am in denial that there will be no more football games, no more amazing parties, bars.....you guys are going to have a very wild time here and the medical school is really nice and apparently there is a really high USMLE pass rate...so it's like the best of both worlds. I don't want to leave and am so jealous.. :scared:

Definitely call on Thursday! They told us that we would be informed by Tues. afternoon, or Wed. morning, but feel free to call. Well, I was soooo anxious, so I called at like 11:30 on Wed (no answer). I ended up calling again later on, and someone picked up and they told me over the phone.

I figure it can't hurt to call them--its not like they're going to rescind your acceptance b/c you call them.

I've heard similar things about USMLE pass rates--however, I've been wondering, is it a 1) high pass rate (i.e. you could have an ochem class with a 100% pass rate where 50 students got Cs,10 got Bs and 1 got an A), or is it 2) high boards scores (i.e. in the same ugrad example, you could have 2 Fs, 1 D, and 7 As)

The reason I'm wondering is b/c I keep hearing this, but I thought that almost all every US med school had a high pass rate. (Even some of the Carib med schools have 90-95% pass rates). So if the case is that they just have a high pass rate, I was wondering how this would be something that set them apart/made them a "better" choice for med school.

If anyone knows, please let me know!!! Thanks! And good luck to everyone--the school is awesome :luck:

Well, they say "high pass rate" because if you know what you want to do in residency (ie. primary care) and it isn't a competitive field, then you may tend to "slack" a little because you know it isn't competitive. Whereas if you want to go into derm., you'll need a high board score to get a good residency. So, since everyone has to PASS the boards to do any residency, schools brag about "high pass rates." Most schools don't have high board scores all the way across for every student bc every student is different in what they want to be and how much they actually study, which most of the time depends on how competitive their residency is. I hope this makes sense!!

Just in case it DOESN'T make sense...let's put it in undergrad terms. Say some students are taking O-Chem and want to be doctors...they would study really hard because getting into med school is competitve and they need A's. Whereas students that want to go into research or teaching science wouldn't need an A in O-chem, they would only need to pass the class bc their field isn't highly competitve to get into, so they can slack a little in Ochem.

So if a med school doesn't have perfect board scores for all students, but have a high pass rate, that doesn't mean that the med school isn't teaching right, it just means students want different things from their education.

Didn't mean to post it twice!

Thanks, but that really wasn't what I was asking about 🙁

I wanted to know if they had HIGH scores, or a HIGH pass rate. (I understand the scores will have a wide variation, but I'm referring to a general trend of higher scores--i.e. the school's scores are skewed). Sorry if I wasn't clear in my earlier post.

Regarding the point you were making, however, I wonder if FSU is pushing the "high pass rate" meme in order to attract students who assume you have to be a primary care/fam prac doc if you go to fsu.

FSU (as well as MANY other schools) brags a "high pass rate."

McMD said:

Right...that's what I said in my first post--which led me to my initial question of, "why brag about a high pass rate, if most schools have a high pass rate?"-->which then led me to question whether it was a HIGH number of people passing, or many people passing with a HIGH score.... 🙁

I interviewed 9/30 and didnt hear back from them till i called and they said I was accepted 10/28. I would definetly call sometime after that date.

Anyone receive any financial aid from fsu ???

Could someone please answer my previous question? If you've gotten an acceptance, I would really like to hear your stats, because I have yet to hear back from them. If you're uncomfortable posting your stats on here, then you can PM me. Thanks!!

Hey NikkyiFSU, you don't have to go. Why don't you apply to med school next year and stay here? You could keep enjoying the games and parties!

On another note, it's nice to see the FSU thread alive!!! It's nice for us awaiting an answer next week (like Trully and me) to read the disscussions about FSU at least once a day. It's aaaallllliiivvveeeee!!!!!!

You are right RunnerMD, all of the US school have hight pass rates. Here is what we were told in our interview at FSU: They have a USMLE step 1 slightly above ave. and a Step 2 well above average (although only one class has taken the step 2 up to this point) The averanges and pass rates are not as important to me becasuse it is almost always the case that you have a very wide range of scores and individual goals and effort plays a major role. It is my opinion that in order to do well, you have to go to whereever you feel most confortable and as a result of that grades and accademic excellence will come your way. I know of one FSU student graduating in 05 who got a Ob/GY recidency spot at Vandervilt and that was the very first graduating class.

Cheers, keep those post comming!

Zeppy I don't know if the list is ranked or not but I do know that the last interview date is on 3/24. So hopefully we will hear some great news in April. :luck:

Hey guys. I interviewed on 1/27 and am planning on calling FSU tomorrow. Actually I called today and they told me to call back tomorrow because the ADCOM was meeting tonight. Anyhow, I'll see if I can find out any more info regarding the waitlist. Whether it's ranked, when they start pulling, etc.

The academic dean told me that the list is not ranked yet, this will change in March when they stop interviewing :luck:

Here is what I know; the list is NOT ranked untill they stop interviews on March. Then they will start to look at applications on hold again and will make a ranked list. Then, as people drop they will call applicants from the ranked list. Truly, you told me that half of the first year class came from the waiting list. Now, that's around 50 spots. I asked how many applicants were on hold and they told me "a lot" although they didn't say a number. My guess is that it's more than 100 and I would like to think it's not much more than 200 apps. At the same time, there are ppl who withdraw their apps because they get in somewhere else and this reduces the waiting list and increases the chances for those of us who are really into FSU. Conclussion: None. This is the kind of calculations you make when you are really desperate. Good luck to all of you and if you have any other meaningless numbers to share, please do.

Yep, a FSU med student in the class of 2009 said that half of their class came from the hold category. Their class size was 80 students. The class size for the upcoming year is supposed to be 100, so that should mean ~50...But again this is "here-say".

If anyone else has any insight please let us know...

the website says they interview 200 kids annually, but i remember them saying this year the will interview 300. Can anyone confirm the number of students they will interview this cycle?

Sand, I don't know the exact number of interviers, but I suspect that the class increase to 100 seats will result in an increase in the number of interviewees. Many of the students accepted right away decide to drop to go to other schools, so I think there will be more than 300 interviewees this year. Hope that helps.

Does anyone know if FSU communicates good/fast via email? thanks

in my experience...NO, they don't get back to you promptly

I have heard of people waiting for two months for them to respond to an email. But you should definitely just call. They are really nice and helpful, IMO.

hey guys
Well I know that people are still being interviewed at fsu...maybe still being accepted. I dont know too much about everything, but i think they interviewed a lot of people..more than 300 because they said they had many more applicants than expected. A friend of mine just interviewed and loved it...and another friend just interviewed and was expected. If you are on the waitlist i think that is a Good thing because a lot of people do use fsu as a backup school. I really loved it and I will probably be attending in the fall.

Hey,

I heard they wait until UF puts out their acceptance list and after 25% of the accepted slots gets turned down, they start calling on those on the waitlist. Please don't despair, I really hope it all works out!

Yep, FSU will still be interviewing people until 3/24...You could be right. They might be interviewing more than 300 people. I know that they opened up Mondays as an interviewing day, and that was not originally planned.

Does anyone know when UF puts out their acceptance list?

I heard that April 10th. I heard all the medical schools have to have their primary rosters by April 15th (meaning everybody has to make their decisions on where they want to go). UF usually waits a few days before the deadline before they come out with their list. I hope that helps!!

Hi again guys, I heard that a FSU applicant first placed in the 'hold category' has already been accepted. I was wondering if anyone out there initially placed in the Hold category has also recieved that long-awaited call. In any event, I think they will start preatty soon.. so hold tight..

Zepp

P.S. This is a crucial time for ppl on the waiting list. Let's keep the messages going so everyone is well informed.

How did your friend find out that s/he was first place on the hold list? I thought they were going to rank it until mid March or something. 😕

No problem, Zeppy Zepp, anything for you...

My friend interviewed at the end of January. ~2 weeks later he was placed on the hold list. Then ~ 2 weeks after that he received a phone call from FSU. They told him that he was accepted! 😀
That's HOW it happened. As far as the committee's decision, I don't know. I thought that people on the hold list wouldn't be reviewed until after they were done interviewing. I guess I was wrong.

So good luck to everyone still waiting! :luck: :luck:

I know you would come through Trully.
Yes, I was also told that they wouldnk't start reviewing applications on hold untill April, but I guess they decided to start sooner.

What's going on with this forum guys? I wanna hear some news, I'm getting desperate already. As of now I don't know what I'm doing next year and that makes me impatient. Throw some good news at me, how many FSU class 2010 do we have here?

Has anybody heard anything from FSU lately?
