GEMS Georgetown 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I forgot to mention that one of the girls i met there told me that she overheard Mr. T telling one of the gems students that two students did not show up for the april interview date. Don't quote on me on this, but if it is true it makes us only 42 rather than 44.

I think it might be true... I saw one folder that wasn't picked up from the table when we all left the room, so I know at least one person didn't show up.

Saw that too Flow. Thanks for the info Esc.

Good thinking. With June 1st as our upper limit and Dr. Walkers baby on the way, I think we have a great chance of hearing something by next week. Congrats to him. He must be so stressed though.
I just thought of something...

I remember Dr. Walker mentioning his wife being pregnant and her due date being May 26th... am I making this up? Can anybody confirm this? I don't know why I would think that date otherwise...

Anyway, I can't imagine the GEMS committee would take the chance of him not being there for deliberations so I'm certain we will find out about acceptances next week. Any thoughts?

Fly, tell me about it. I feel like I have butterflies in my stomach when I think about GEMS.

Time to dust off my xbox 360 and play some street fighter 4 on xbox live from now until Monday dawn. Who is up for a challenge? 😀

Hadouken!

A female SF player? Awesome! My crack is Battlefield Bad Company on PS3. My girl and I play that **** non-stop!

...well it's Friday. I dont think I've ever looked forward this much to a Monday in my life. A final g'luck to everyone.

I don't own a PS3, so I'm a bit unfamilar with Battlefield, but I do play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on my XB360. It's crazy intense.

I can't wait for CoD: Modern Warfare 2 and Ace Combat 7 to be released. Good times. Nothing beats kicking anonymous virtual butt, while talking smack through the headset and drinking mango juice.

At least you guys own gaming systems and a computer. I owned neither and in fact, I dont even own a TV or a Bed. Lucky!

I guess i should just pass time by jogging......sigh..

good luck everyone again!

:luck:🙂👍

I got my computer and TV on craigslist. Free~!

People give out a lot of free things on craigslist, granted they're not super modern devices, but they work perfectly fine. Go to craigslist and look at their free section. You can get almost anything if you're patient enough.

Thanks PlasticWatch. I actually tried and it didnt work out. I only use a computer when I am on campus and by the time i find out about these things, others have taken the free items. sigh....

If we're both accepted into the program. I have a laptop I can give you. I got it for FREE! 🙂

It's an IBM T22 I believe. Runs perfectly fine. I don't use it because I got a newer computer for FREE! 🙂

Oh great! thanks! Lets hope all of us are accepted into the program. I hope and hope and hope that Monday we will find out.

:luck:🙂👍

Fly, if I get accepted into the program, and if your computer ever breaks down for any reason, I can fix it for free!

Speaking of Craigslist, I've recently gotten a free Brother HL-2040 laser printer. The previous owner said that it was broken, but I found out a couple of hours later that the paper feeder pin was in the wrong position, and now it works like new. That printer has saved me hundreds in printing costs!

Hey FishPaste, I saw that you posted interviewing for DPMS. If you don't mind asking, how would you compare the two programs?

Esc, there appears to be a difference favoring GEMS but comparison isnt necessarily fair because DPMS has only been around since 2003 and GEMS since 1977. Both are great programs b/c you end up in an excellent allopathic school if you do well. However, DPMS has a higher failure rate (about 40% dont make it to DUCOM) due to the MCAT requirement to complete the program and overall the students seemed less family-like than GEMS. Also, I kinda got the vibe that DPMSers are not seen as equals in the school, but this is only MY impression and, really, who gives a crap, you're in med school! The best part for me about DPMS is that you'll end up in one of the most technologically advanced med schools in the nation (beautiful, new facilities) with a reputation that is quickly rising (their match list is ivy league-esque). As for GEMS, I dont need to explain, you saw it for yourself - just AMAZING.

If I was blessed with a chance to attend both, I would choose GEMS for the added prestige and the family atmosphere but I would be equally psyched to be in DPMS.

I absolutely loved the family atmosphere of the GEMS program, and hope and pray that I would one day be a part of it. During the interview, for once in my life, I felt like I wasn't a loaner. This this the closest thing to a family that I have experienced in more than 10 years, and it will be an honor to be here. I felt blessed for even being a part of the interview process! I will look forward to Monday. Even if I don't get accepted, it will be a blessing to see the lives of others change for the better in the blink of an eye. Hopefully, we will all experience that life changing call.

On a completely unrelated note, I decided to go to commencement. If anything, I'm doing it for my mother, who has always wished for this day to come, but cannot be here. I think it would be nice to have something that she can see that I made it through undergrad.

However, commencement begins in 3 minutes, and I have yet to leave my apartment... Maybe I should log off right now...

I am glad you decided to go. Have fun!

Thanks. It was ok for the most part. Nothing spectacular. After the commencement was done, everyone went outside to take photos, and I was the only one without anyone to take photos with, and realized that I didn't have many friends. Oh well, I guess. I have some nice photos to send back to my mother, so I'm sure she will be happy to see them.

Hi all,

I received the letter of acceptance in the mail today, and it looks like it was sent out on May 15, 2009. It contains the acceptance letter and a "letter of understanding." Just wanted everyone to know and keep a look out for the mailman/lady! I also live within the DC area so I'm guessing I received the mail sooner than those that live farther away. But if in year's past they called people, maybe those that live farther away will get a phone call instead? No idea, but just giving everyone the heads up!

PS. Does anyone know how the current GEMS-ers are doing ie. if all current GEMS received an interview invite, and if they did, if all or most were accepted? I tried to email some whose addresses I had but haven't heard back, but I'm guessing they must have/must be super busy! Just wondering because everyone was really nice, and I'd love to check up on them.

Oh man, That's Great News to hear!!! I ran straight to my mailbox after reading your message, but no mail... but I'm quite far from the DC area. I'm still hoping to hear or see some good news!

i wonder if all acceptance/rejection letters have been sent?

Has anyone else in the DC area received a similar notice in the mail? Please check!

CONGRATULATIONS! I am in California and I hope I will receive this acceptance letter as well.

My heart is beating twice as fast too after reading your post. Good luck everyone!:luck::xf:

I forgot to ask in the previous posting. What is a "Letter of Understanding"?

I forgot to ask in the previous posting. What is a "Letter of Understanding"?

It's a document that lists conditions of your acceptance, and you sign and return it, saying that you understand the 9 items listed (it includes stuff like, As a GEMS student, I will take all modules, courses, and electives required of GEMS students etc.)

Congrats to all who are hearing back and applying. Good luck to all of you.

I was wondering, out of the many postbac programs you have heard about, Do any of them NOT require an MCAT score? Any that are significantly easier to get into, more than other? Let me know.

Thanks!

Does anyone know if the notification will be by phone or Mail for sure? Last year it appears that the notification was by phone, but this year it seems to be by mail.

I don't remember this topic being address at the interview day and no information can be found on the GEMS website.

Anyone know at all?

I haven't the slightest clue. I couldn't find any information, nor did I remember a mailed acceptance being mentioned at all. I guess it's just wait and see on this one...

I believe calls will be made out tomorrow. I mean, they called us for the interview and also sent us a letter through snail mail. I just think they didn't anticipated qc getting the mail so quick (the day after they sent it out).

Tomorrow is it guys.... Good luck and I will post if I get the call.

I seriously hope that is the case. I don't think I'm going to sleep tonight...

It's good that the committee has already made decisions so that we don't have to wait till the 30th, but waiting to know their decision is the hardest part.

Maxim3l, where are you?? We need your thoughts and analysis? 😀

lol! Without a doubt they're calling on Monday people! They've been making acceptance calls since people first started posting about GEMS on SDN and that letter to QC (congrats) says they've come to a decision, thank God. Calls will be made, I assure you. MONday it is.

Until then, sit back and enjoy the longest Sunday in your life:laugh:

lol Thanks for posting bro.. So you are saying they have already called some people or will start calling Monday?

Time has already slowed down over here... I'm all kinds of nervous about the acceptance call right now, and I'm trying to stay focused at work.

lol, no I meant that they have been making acceptance calls at least since 2001, when people first started posting about acceptances about GEMS, so things will be no different this time. No calls have been made yet, even to people that received the letter, so the calls will definitely start tomorrow.

Remember, they made then between 8am-9am, your local time, last year.

Flow, I feel you brother, time goes slowest at work

...also a little something random i JUST discovered writing this post: You ever notice why the SDN logo's "n" is half shaded? Because it spells "dr." if you look at the blue color only!

Oh wow, I never noticed that, that's fire!

Well, I had sent an email to Mr. Taylor wondering if the acceptance and the rejection notice will be sent via Mail or Call. Hopefully, I will get a response. If i do get a response on how GEMS will be contacting us from Mr. Taylor, I will let everyone know and maybe that will ease everyone's mind a little.

Good luck!

🙂:luck:

That's if the GEMS committee aren't already lurking in this thread, haha.

Well, I am sure either the current/past students and the GEMS Admission Committee have looked or are looking in the SDN forums as we speak, possibly various other forums as well. 🙂

I figure I write an email to Mr. Taylor asking to see if any information can be given to us (Applicants) with regards to how the notices will be provided to the applicants this year. Rather than guessing about it or making assumptions based on past trends, it may be the best thing to simply ask.

I am so nervous right now.......I actually checked out a laptop from campus and renewing it every 2 hours so that I can read about everyone's postings and hear the latest updates.

🙂:luck:

I'm so nervous that I ran through two batteries, also checking this thread for updates through my phone. Work has slowed down a lot, and I will be here all night. I'm starting to have breathing problems...

I will say a prayer for you and everyone. I hope we all become classmates and be able to really realize our dreams in the near future.
