Georgetown Gems 2012-2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is it just me or did anyone else feel discouraged by the questions regarding how we will finance our GEMS year? I hate to have loans and I am wondering if any non-loan financial aid will be offered. Will we have to pay the tuition entirely by ourselves without contributions from the state and also from the school or affiliated organizations?
Yeah from what i've read thus far, Stafford and Grad Plus loans should cover the cost of attendance. I seriously doubt Gems will offer any financial assistance beyond gov't loans. Congress recently passed a budget bill I believe that eliminates Uncle Sam from being responsible for the interest on our loans while we are in school. Money is tight everywhere but I sure if we are diligent and wise we will be fine. However if you make it to M1 expect to pay some serious dinero (Avg. $80,000/ yr). I plan on doing HPSP through the Navy to cover my cost though, "IF" accepted.

I just said i'd use federal loans to cover the bulk of it, told them my savings, that my parents were willing to contribute, and my credit score to show I'm credit worthy if more outside financing is necessary. I don't think it's anything to get discouraged about. I think they just want you to be aware that going through with a GEMS year is going to cost some money.

That is completely false information. It's nice of you to try and help everyone here by explaining the reality of fin aid, but no reason to go over board with false figures.

LoveMyRam, out of curiosity, what is a more representative figure including cost of living?

What is the address for transcripts? I'm not ready to submit, but I'm worried about the processing time for my school to send out transcripts,

Didn't report any false figures or go over board. This is what Georgetown SOM reports as the total cost of attendance from their website. If you have any other information please share. Take a look for yourself... http://som.georgetown.edu/prospectivestudents/financialaid/cost/

TOTAL BUDGET 78,200 78,650 82,000 85,800

No one borrows 80K a year when tuition is 48K. The numbers you are looking at is what the financial aid department has deemed as the MOST EXCEPTIONAL need of funds that a student may need, not at all what one should expect to pay, nor anywhere near what students here discuss as the average. But hey if thats what you want to think you'll need and don't feel its ideal, feel more than free to apply elsewhere, there are plenty of students that don't mind paying even an unrealistic figure like that.... The reason I may come off a little harsh is because many many students read these forums and use that to guide their decision, and using information, of which you're not fully aware of, may sway many people in the wrong direction.

Feel free to PM with any burning Q's, I wont be checking this thread anymore.

Well the Application is Closed as of today. Hope that you all are almost done getting your reccs and transcripts in. I know the deadline is coming up soon for that also. Just wanted to wish everyone Good Luck. 🙂🙂🙂

The website says it's due on march 30th...

WHOA!! I was sitting on this app for sometime now. I just submitted my app literally 12 minutes before you posted this! I don't know if the app is closed for real or not but I'm sure glad I sent it in time! Good luck to everyone applying! Lets wake this thread up a little!

I'm sorry it seems that my post may have confused you. I did not mean to cause any anxiety. So what I was trying to say was that I believe that yesterday was the last day we had to submit new applications and make any changes to our existing ones. At least this is what the GEMS Program Brochure implies. In addition that we still have until the 30th to send in all our transcripts and reccs. I was just coming to give everyone my best wishes. Again I apologize J And Best wishes. Good luck guys.

ah, I think it's just a mixup. In the past, all applications had to be submitted by the 15th, with supplementary materials due by the 30th. It looks like this year they changed it up and everything can be submitted up to the 30th (with everything having to be in by then).

So, the application can still be submitted (But I'd hurry up if I were you, the 30th is approaching fast!)

Hey everybody!

Hope all is well!

I was wondering if GEMS still accepts fee waivers to waive the application fee and can professors email GEMS the recommendation forms instead of mailing it as listed on the bottom of the page? Really appreciate taking the time to answer my questions!

Hey HopeandBelieve - I have no idea about the fee waiver, but I would ask GEMS directly. They should get back to you within 2 business days. As for the recommendation letters, I believe that online submission of the recommendation letters is preferred. I used interfolio, so I'm not sure about the process, but I believe your LOR writers should have received an email with the forms, and a link to submit them to?

good luck!

Did everyone only send in two letters of recommendations from sciences or a pre-health committee letter?

yeah, I sent my two science LOR's via interfolio. I got the "application complete" email, so I HOPE it's okay....

Yay!! Congrats to those submitting and that will be submitting soon.

I received the application complete email as well! Crossing my fingers and my toes!

So last year they got their first calls on the West Coast around april 1st. This year, our interviews are about a week later and the application portal is open about a week longer. Think that means we will be getting our calls that second week of april?

Two more days to get everything in! Good luck to all of us applicants, and may we hear a phone call soon! :luck::xf::luck:

Hope everyone is staying encouraged! This thread isn't as lively as last year's but hopefully people will come back and share their great news in a few weeks!

I think we are all really nervous and patiently waiting. Good luck to you!! I hope we all have good news to share.

Hey guys, shoot me a PM if you applied to GEMS this year. I'll put together a list of everyone and post it so we can keep track of how things are going and meet up when interviews come around.

:xf:I pray that I get in, it sounds like a great program. You can add me to the list.:xf:

Glad to see some more life in this forum!

The admissions committee has been hard at work going through y'all's applications! Some amusing tales have also filtered down to us. Apparently there have been people trying to circumvent the rules of the application. :meanie:
A note to future applicants: If you miss the deadline you wont be able to get away with submitting through the GSMI application.

I hope all of you receive good news whenever it comes! :luck:

....wow. But you'd still need to have all of your documentation in, and there were different forms to fill out...AND IT'S A DIFFERENT PROGRAM

What a waste of an application fee🙄

Hey BeanAllergy, do you know when the ADCOM is expecting to start handing out invitations? Also, do you know what the remaining first-year med classes are that GEMS student have to take upon completion of the GEMS program and acceptance into the Medical School? Just curious. Thanks!!

What do you mean they tried submitting through gsmi?

Unfortunately I have to idea. 🙁 But seeing as how the April interview day is fast approaching, I hope they'll come soon!
As for the remaining classes, this is a list of all classes in the M1 curriculum: http://som.georgetown.edu/medicaleducation/curriculum/FirstYearModules/74070.html
GEMS students are exempt from the Cardiopulmonary, Gastrointestinal, and Renal modules. However, they must still attend the anatomy portions of these modules and take the anatomy test again.

When you fill out the GEMS application there is a portion where you indicate whether you are applying to the GEMS or GSMI program. Because these two programs have different deadlines. I guess an applicant that missed the GEMS deadline attempted to try and submit the app by indicating the GSMI program. 😕

Are those the only modules covered in the GEMS year? Thanks for clarifying.

They are the only medical modules. We also have additional classes like Biochemistry and Advanced Physiology and Pathophysiology that we don't take with the medical students.

That makes more sense lol... Thanks for clarifying! Happy holidays to you!

Hi guys,

I applied as well. Good luck to all of you!

Hi everyone,

I'm new to SDN and I too have applied to this year's GEMS Program. Best of luck to all my fellow hopefuls!

Hopefully we can start hearing some good news today and end the torture of waiting. Hang in there guys!!

:luck::xf::luck: This is probably the week! West Coasters tell us once you get the call so us East Coasters can start panicking. Good luck everyone!

Hey guys, just sharing great news. I just received my II phone call, I'm from Miami, Fl. Call was at 1:30 pm EST. Good luck to the rest of you!
