Georgetown rejection?

I'm not upset, but kinda surprised that I got rejected from G-town. I have a 36Q mcat and 3.98 gpa. Is Georgetown basically doing the same thing as GW (i.e weeding out applicants with profiles above their common average)? I'm not trying to sound arrogant, but am just concerned because I've applied to many schools that are presumably more competitive that georgetown.

its more than just grades and scores- maybe you have bad EC's, a messed up personal statement, or a lousy recommendation letter. good luck however

GTown and GW get a TON of applications (and a ton of money from those apps, too, but that's another story). Basically, they can make their accepted stats as high/low as they want or they can go for really interesting people instead. They choose the latter.

My EC's are not bad at all (three summers of research at Maryland, Hopkins, and NIH, shadowed an ER physician, and worked with a thoracic surgeon). I was told by people close to the admissions committee at Hopkins that my personal statement was phenomenal. I don't know about the letter of recs b/c i made them confidential (o and by the way I attend an IVY league university, which makes my GPA a bit more impressive I think). What more can I possibly do?

I got invite at GWU but not Georgetown or BU. I think these schools get so many apps that they just pick names out of a hat. Don't let people tell you it was because of some deficiency in a non-numerical factor (EC's, recs, essays). The process is very subjective. Your EC's will be perceived as good enough by some reviewers and not good enough by others.

I don't really know, I guess, because I was rejected...but I am guessing there is a strong numerical component too...I am confident I 'fit' extremely well with their philosophy, but my numbers are just too low for them to look past, I guess...They want people who are right around or above their numerical averages AND people who have that philosophy...(this is not fact, of course, but this is what I was told by a Gtown med student...)...

I dunno...I spent much of my essay talking about cura personalis and the cultural, ethical, moral factors that goes into practicing medicine and not regarding patients as simply diseases and symptoms. I'll admit that I didn't badger them with the point. I did spend a portion of the essay talking about DC and doing a little research. Apparently, that did me in.

I wrote how their "cura personalis" philosophy was the reason that Georgetown was my FIRST CHOICE. yet,I still got the boot. 👎

Honestly, I didn't. I discussed the practical application of the Georgetown mantra in clinical medical ethics and a few other issues (multidisciplinary decision-making, research and the future of medicine, etc.).

Well, it's one thing to write about cura personalis and actually demonstrate that's what you're into through EC's and the personal statement. And if they can find those people who've also done something cool with their lives (Jolie South is a great example) then they're going to be all over that person.

Look, I don't want to be rude either. I got rejected from them too (which was probably a combination of a bad GPA and very tpical EC's). Just realize that everyone most likely wrote about the same thing. We all had access to their website. They're going to use more than the secondary essay to determine if you fit in.

I think GWU was the one that's received 13k applications so far.

I know people are saying that your life and your ECs or whatever don't fit in with with georgetown blah blah, but i still believe applicants such as yourself are screened out for having high numbers sometimes. There was a thread about this a few weeks ago. I'm not bitter though, because I will deserve my rejections. 🙂

Yeah, sometimes I think they look and ask how likely it is that person to matriculate here? if your stats are really high sometimes, i think they will pass. i think this is why so many people are shocked to be rejected from "safe" schools. this is just my opinion, of course 🙂

be careful what u say though cuz many people here seem to think each med school looks to fill their class with only students that fit their educational philosophy, which i think is such BS

I have to agree with Cuba. OP: Your GPA is phenomenal (b*stard... I'm jealous) and from an Ivy to boot. Your MCAT is in the 96-97 percentile and your EC's are rock solid. One would think that you were either a) screened out because you're unlikely to matriculate, or b) laid a real t*rd on your PS; my guess is the former. Good luck at Harvard, Hopkins, Yale, UMich, or whichever top-tier school you choose to attend next year 🙂.

In my secondary essay I wrote about my experience as an underserved, my jesuit college education and cura personalis, and family background in CAM (georgetown has one of most developed CAM programs in the country), and about some research, covered all the points I guess😀

id laid down the whole jesuit men and women for others, have lowish mcats, good gpa, and great ECs (lots of volunteering and global work)...got the reject too...I was definitely surprised since i had the jesuit connection and worked for a catholic health organization...

my advisor said georgetown was the most random of the schools...that after how many years working she can't figure out a rhyme or reason to their acceptance patterns...c'la'vie

Hey, don't take it personal it's just how it works. Think about it. Everyone hear is pointing out that it's not enough to just have your awesome stats. Of course, you know that too and that's probably why you applied there because you know although with your stats you have a great shot at a top 10 school, you know that this process is subjective and you may not get in to a top 10 so you applied somewhat broadly and to Georgetown where the avgs are 31ish/3.6.

A TON of people do the same thing as you with your stats. Now think about it, if medical schools really selected the BEST applicants they have for interviews and admission, well what the hell would they do when these "best applicants' decide to go to the better school.

Sure it sounds arrogant to say my stats were too good for school X but in reality it could very well be the case. Beyond you making a good doctor/student/etc. they need to evaluate the probability of you actually coming to their school. If they're confident you're going to go somewhere else, than they need to go find someone that they're more certain will come there.

BTW, GW, Gtown, they don't really receive 10K+ applications like you think. It's not secondaries, just primaries.. Lots of people designate them on their primary amcas application.. I read that they get between 5000-6000 secondaries (still a ton but half of what most ppl are thinking)

Actually, I think you are right about this with Gtown, their completed applications are about 5,000 out of 10,000 primaries. But GW's number of complete applications is usually closer to the number of primaries submitted, around 10,000 I think. Probably because A) GW has lower "stats" so it appears easier to get into so people just finish it (creates probably the worst odds in medical school admissions though!) and B) GW's secondary is pretty easy while Gtown's sucks with that 5k character essay.

It is not as random as you might think. It is all about their philosophy and they select candidates who have their stats AND the mindset. How they determine that is in YOUR ESSAY. However, if you just write about cura personalis and how you are dedicated to humanity etc etc without showing for it in your EC, they'll think you're bs-ing, and they'll still reject you. So your essay is the key. I keep telling ppl this, but none of them believe me lol.

Who knows what they actually use. I applied (3.5GPA 34MCAT) last year, harped the whole cura pesonalis thing (been going to jesuit run institutions for the past 8 years) and got offered an acceptance.

Georgetown is by far my first choice, but I think I screwed up my application. I want to become a reproductive endocronologist and now that I am reading about the catholic/jesuit position on reproductive technology I think I either should not have mentioned my dream career, or stated that I am an orthodox jew and am aware of religious concerns in the field and intend to find ways to help women without impeding on their faith.

Since I only mentioned that I want to be an RE and use CAM to find all methods to help women become pregnant, do you think I screwed myself over? I have been waiting with bated breath for an interview with them because I really love their CAM MS/MD program. Two of my siblings went to law school there so i feel a connection that way as well.

Yeah, I got the boot from Georgetown as well. But if their admissions process is similar to UF's, then after Georgetown admissions gives slight preference to there students and of legacy students, a lot of students are competing for fewer seats. I am glad though that I tried. Anyways, someone else posted before that when looking at the number of applicants and acceptees at both Georgetown and GW, you have like a 96-99% chance of being rejected.

you absolutely, totally have a shot at both. you have all the pieces of the pie. there is an element of randomness to this whole process, of course. i have lower gpa and slightly better mcat. on hold at gw and interviewed at georgetown. i think your special qualities as you described them will make you attractive to both of those schools and a lot more.

I am not a Christian...but

Jesuit institutions, in keeping with their traditional role as an order in the Catholic Church, tend to value individuals who are going into medicine to serve. Jesuits are also known for their value of knowledge and Georgetown specifically as a top Jesuit Research institution (relative to the other Jesuit institutions such as Creighton and Loyola). In other words, I can only assume, they are looking for individuals who have displayed a strong dedication to the under served within their community and found the time to conduct research. They are not as concerned with whether or not you are Christian, but again this is only an assumption on my part. I have however, gone to Jesuit Catholic Churches for most of my life and at least have an idea of what the mentality of their order is like, but not well enough to get an interview unfortunately🙂
