Georgia Applicants 2009 - MCG, Emory, Morehouse, Mercer, PCOM

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I thought they accepted 269 last year? Anywho, without knowing your exact rank in the list (good luck on finding that out), it's better to keep your eye on two things...

May 15th (date that most people alert the schools that they will not be attending)

June 1st (Date that MCG Admissions office puts pressure on their students to pick one school.. If they don't, they get their acceptance pulled).

After about June 7th, make plans to get a MS since there are no jobs to be found.. lol...

PS. I would expect 30-40 people will get in, off the waitlist, immediately due to earlier students declining the offer to attend (this will come between 4/1 and 4/14)

Note-These is my nutty hypothesis as to how the admissions process works at MCG (with some facts.. such as the two movement dates).

what is an acceptance envelope from MCG like? How about Mercer? any news from them?

I noticed people who got accepted received their letters yesterday or the day before. Does this mean people who get something in the mail today or later on are all waitlists? =(

Got my acceptance today! Mail takes a few days longer to reach Chicago, IL :) Man, definitely happy. What a relief!

Thanks man! Feels good, esp being a reapplicant. But no need to tell you that, you were in the same boat if I'm not mistaken.

I was waitlisted two years in a row (MCG and Mercer). I guess moving back to GA was a good move.

:)

PS. Is it August yet?

I know the accepted GPA for MCG is 3.6 (for 2008) but does anyone know the ranges of people accepted? Or do they not publish this info. Thanks, and congrats to all the accepted people! For those on the waitlist good luck!

No clue on the range, but I can tell you this- it wouldn't mean much. If you have a 3.0 applicant get accepted, he's done a lot more than just a 3.0 (grad school, post bacc, very good MCAT, non-traditional applicant, and most likely a repeat offender).

Was it a 3.69/30.4? Btw, that is the same UG GPA as Emory

Accepted today after being on hold at MCG since December. Was almost positive that I was going to be waitlisted.

Withdrawing my deposit from Mercer, hopefully that opens my spot for someone else!

Isn't that kinda crazy. I would expect Emory to be higher or MCG to be lower. Not that MCG isn't a good school, but Emory has the name behind it.

well today i finally received my acceptance to mcg. It was a big relief after being on hold. I had a 3.7 and a 30R if anyone is wondering. I had some shadowing and volunteering but nothing special. I think I got in because i was really passionate in my interview and talked up how much every experience I had meant to me. I feel lucky. Congrats to everyone else that got in and goodluck to those on the waitlist.

I just got the call from Mercer yesterday! :) Still can't believe it... Does anyone know about how long it takes for the acceptance letter to arrive in the mail? (I'm in Athens).

Congratulations everyone! I can't wait to meet everyone in Augusta in August!! Exciting times!!

I got a waitlist letter from MCG yesterday, which wasn't particularly unexpected. Still no news from Mercer for me. Congrats to all of those who got accepted!

I have a theory that MCG will be taking fewer off the waitlist this year: I think more students will go to MCG for the price, instead of taking the acceptances from schools that are a bit more of a financial reach. Anyone?

tossed into waitlist after six months of sitting around. had a 33 mcat, 3.7 gpa, interviewer told me i was great and to please stay in georgia. got into other (more expensive) schools, but wanted to stay in georgia so held onto MCG. not sure what they were thinking at this point - out of state i go

In the past it seems that the waitlist has move from high GPA/MCAT----) lower MCAt/GPA students in a very predictible fashion (3.94, 3.91, 3.87, etc). Perhaps you will have good luck with the waitlist.

That might be true in general however there are exceptions. For example I got off the MCG waitlist 2 weeks after getting my letter in and had a 28 MCAT. Granted my GPA was 3.9 but I think that the admission committee focuses more on other experiences other than MCAT and GPA when compiling the waitlist. So for those of you with lower stats don't lose hope that does not necessarly determine your spot on the waitlist.

I received a waiting list letter from MCG three days ago. I now can say that I am off their hook.
I've been looking for housing in both atlanta and Harrogate tn. Since I am hearing all this bad news about drug on the Mexico border with Suwanee, GA been the place where they have arrested the most cases, I think will be in Tennessee.
Good luck to those of you who got accepted. I don't have any hope any more because of my low stats. I am probably on the bottom of their list.

Just got back home to find an envelope from MCG, got placed on the alternate list :boom:, 3.8/36 if anyone was curious, more waiting i guess, however, congrats to those that just received acceptances this week!!!

When did you interview if I may ask?

Any thoughts on the MD/Phd program at MCG? I am currently considering the offer I received from them recently.

Any thoughts on the MD/Phd program at MCG? I am currently considering the offer I received from them recently.

I think there are about 4 good labs at MCG... and that's it. If I was you, I would look at the specific programs that you are interested in, track down the faculty, ask them if they are going to be able to support your research (remember that you won't even start it till 2011), and see if they will still be around in 2014 when you need them on your committee (there's nothing worse than your PI leaving during your graduate school). As a former doctoral candidate (I passed pre-lims and bailed with a MS to start medical school), these are the types of things that I would look really closely at before accepting an offer for such a program.

What other schools are you looking at? What is the stipend difference? Do any of them include health insurance? What are the teaching requirements (if any)? Are you required to finish/defend before you start your clinics (in 3 years)?

What fields are you interested in?

3rd time not the charm. Wait listed at MCG for 3 years in a row. Called Mercer and spoke to Mary everyone who has be accepted there has already been contacted and their wait list will get decided next week. :(

Anyone else having a tough time studying now that they are holding an acceptance? I got 1 month left of grad classes, and just cant get focused enough to study. All I can think about is next year! Just gotta make B's and my acceptances shouldn't be rescinded... haha

I have never heard of MCG a second look day but I have never gotten an acceptance letter

GeorgianCMV, if you don't mind sharing, what is your GPA and MCAT? Thanks! And Congrats on the acceptance!

Sorry this response took me so long!!! Crazy work week last week.

My GPA was a 3.66. My final MCAT was a 30Q, though I did have to take it 3 times to get there :)eek:), my first score being a 23M and second a 26M.

I have over 2 years of very solid clinical experience doing medical assisting and surgical assisting, and I feel that this is why I was taken off the hold list. I also wrote a letter of intent. I felt that my interview went well, but wasn't exactly stellar. I feel very lucky, as I know that some great will-be doctors may get waitlisted.

I hate to say it, but I think this will turn out to be a very accurate theory.

there might be one on here, but don't want to look through 27 pages, can someone post Mercer's match list?

I'm kind of having motivational issues at work too. I just want to mindlessly stare at the wall and wait for the med school freight train to hit me right between the eyes......four more months to go.

That's been my plan since September 29th.

Does MCG have a second look day?

but if you're around Augusta, you can always PM me, though if its around test time I might not have much time to spare. I'll be here spring break (Masters) with not much to do

I was also wondering if anyone is looking for a roommate for Mercer this year?
