Hey all,
Just wondering if this is possible? I sent out $1000 to KCOM back in Jan. (first school i got into) and decided that I can't go there. Is it possible to get that money back? What if I explain that I am really strapped for $$$???

Thx

I think your SOL. But you can always call and ask.

Do schools request that large of a deposit up front? I thought you had until may 15th to decide.

You usually have a couple of weeks to decide if you want to send in a deposit. Some schools let you pay in installments. May 15th is the last day you can be holding more than one acceptance. So, you can send deposits to as many schools as you want, but you must make the final decision of where you want to attend by May 15th.

Some schools like TUCOM give you 2 weeks to fork over $2000 ($4000) if early decision. UHS gave us about a month post interview if we were accepted before 3/15 I think. After that, it was two weeks.

The only school I've ever heard of returning a deposit was OSU and that was only for like a hundred bucks.

BTW, Dan, it's nice to see another raider fan on the board 🙂

kumar28,
I was in the exact position as you, back in January. I had been accepted to KCOM, paid my deposit, and then had to switch my decision based on unexpected family issues. I called and talked to the office of admissions, and they said that they "Almost never do they ever return deposits" furthermore in the same conversation they also said "We feel that your situation doesn't warrant a refund", so, good luck in getting your money back, the way I see it, I just made a $1000 donation without the tax write-off. They're a real understanding bunch. Let me know if you have any luck.

And they shouldn't have to pay you back. Look, every school I applied to made clear, in no uncertain terms, that the deposits were completely nonrefundable. I'm sorry that they didn't understand your situation, but schools make a lot of money from people who can't decide where they want to go to school. Who would want to give this up? Furthermore, they have to be able to have some idea of who they can count on enrolling. If all of the schools had refundable deposits, then everyone would hold spots at every school that they got into. This doesn't make much sense. The only thing that gets me are the schools that seriously pressure the applicant to make a decision. TUCOM is a fine example. I literally found out I was in at UHS on the day that my deposit was due at TUCOM. I was prepared to drive an hour to the touro to drop off my deposit if I didn't get into UHS.

People, be happy that you have had the opportunity to make multiple deposits. I'm sure that there are some people on this board who would willingly pay three deposits if it meant they would be going to med school next year.

Peace,

Wannabe DO,
Next time you quote me take a better look at what I was conveying. I never said that there should be refunds for deposits, nor did I undermine the idea of deposits into schools. I frankly told my story to inform Kumar28 the possibility of getting the initial deposit back from KCOM was quite low. I restated my conversation with the admissions staff to display that you need more than a death to get your deposit back. All I asked KCOM to do was to be understanding, they weren't and they have that right.
We all understand the basis of deposits, but it's funny how some schools use these "deposits". Most osteopathic schools require a total of $2000-$4000 to be paid by mid-May, I do believe that schools with such high initial deposit (such as KCOM) have the sole basis of committing people monetarily. Most all allopathic schools have an initial deposit of $250, some osteopathic schools have initial deposits of $250, $500. The longer you hold on to your seat the higher the deposits become and therefore the more money you loose.
So, what I had stated before, KCOM has every right to deny refunds of deposits. On a side note, it intrigues me how certain schools demand financial commitment immediately, and there are others who don't......

Yeah same here. I see your going to UHS. Have fun in chief country! If I'm lucky I may be joining you in KC at either UHS or KU depending on how things go.

BTW exactly how much are deposits? Do they depend on the school and do they increase in size the loner you hold onto a seat?

sorry but it really annoys me when future medical students write poorly. it reflects badly on our profession. therefore, i shall speak my peace: LOSE=to involuntarily let go of something LOOSE=a fit which is free and large, or something to that effect.

thanks for the correction, I guess I should re-read my posts before posting, to ensure that I didn't hit the "O" key one tooo many times, as it significantly impaired the message in my post.

I agree, Mom. When can we work on capitalization?

That is a poor effort for a first post. Doctors are notorious for illegible writing anyway, so it's only fitting for there to be a few errors now and then on the old boards.

Fine, guys. I apologize for an ascerbic first post. And doctors are not notoriously bad spellers; they are notoriously bad ~writers~, ie their handwriting generally sucks. And, this isn't a script pad, it's a forum, so I think we can all muster up the extra effort, right?

Well, I will at least. Who cares, anyways. It's just my pet peeve, particularly in individuals who are supposed to be highly educated.

Ahhhh, the Spelling Nazi strikes again!!!!! ACERBIC!!! ASCERBIC IS NOT A WORD!!!!

I am duly mortified, although grateful for the correction. That reminds me of the time my professor informed me that belabouredly is not a word. Anyways the whole thing is pretty funny.
I apologize if I was rude.

Ooh, another tidbit of ussdfiant's sarcasm

my post was in no way meant to be a personal attack on you. So I'm sorry if it came off that way. I just find it interesting how many people are willing to spend oogles of money on the app process and then turn around and expect to get some of it back. I didn't set up the system, and by all means, I don't like it. I do, however, understand why it is in place. A school is not likely going to give anyone money back without extreme extenuating circumstances. I have never heard of it happening (except for OSU). We just need to quit complaining, and move on with our lives.

I don't know how I'm going to deal with it. One of my local sports store has an incognito raiders hat for going to Chiefs games (red hat with Raiders shield). Are you from the KC area? I really need to find the local Raiders fans so I have someone to go to the game with. (November 23, Arrowhead Stadium.)

I can tell you about the ones that I had to deal with. TUCOM is $2000 due two weeks after the date on the acceptance letter. Then another $2000 matriculation deposit later on. UHS was $1000 due about a month after the interview. Then the matriculation deposit was another grand due by March 15. TUCOM asks for $4000 if you do the Early Decision Program.

I don't go to KC much unless I have to. I hate interstate driving through kansas. That and wearing a Charles Woodson jersey to arrowhead isn't the safest thing to do.

I had put down a $500 deposit at DMU.

I have since withdrawn my application.

I am SOL.

Personally, I feel that deposits should be refundable up until May 15, to correlate with MD schools. The deposits were ridiculously high, especially when they are non-refundable.

That's just my take on it.

the high deposits really are awful... i lucked out and got my acceptances all in the same week. i ended up only paying a deposit to KCOM.

still, the $2K is a lot of cash to come up with (i didn't want to put it on a credit card). i'm trying to think of it as an interest free savings account until i get to school... then i get "reimbursed" from my loan check.

i wrote an e-mail to LECOM requesting a refund of my $1500 deposit. no response from them, but then i really didn't expect one.

by the way dagny79, one speaks his "piece"
