GPA's, GRE's, XTRA's, ACCEPTANCES

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@DPianoT

It all depends on what your GRE scores end up being as well as the amount of hours you spent in each physical therapy setting. To me, it appears that your GPA is good, and if you were to stick around and get a duel major, I would assume that you would improve your GPA with those classes as well and that course rigor would look better than simply retaking a class. Again, this is my opinion on the matter, but I'm not on any review boards. I just know they factor in more than just your GPA when reviewing applications. Hope this helps a little!

NEED SOME ADVICE!

University:
CSU Sacramento
Major: BA in Music, Bio Minor
Overall GPA: 3.85
Pre-Req GPA: 3.8
GRE: N/A (will be taking it this summer)

Observation: 200 hours

Extra Curriculars: Church leadership, pianist/accompanist, Med Tech at assisted living facility, elementary school Paraeducator, Patient Transporter at a Hospital, Vice president of PrePT club, Cadaver Lab Assistant, ER volunteer

I will be applying this next cycle to CSU's and University of Puget Sound, as well as University of Washington.
I'm not a traditional science major, and I have sort of a dilemma. I got a B in one of my Chem classes and it kinda hurt my prereq GPA. If I were to retake it, it would raise it up to a 3.95. Or I can stay an extra semester (I'm set to graduating in the fall rn), and double major in Kinesiology, since I've met most of the requirements already. I can't do both of these because it doesn't work with my schedule. Which one would be more appealing? A double major, or a higher prereq GPA?

My number one school is in Washington and those schools are really competitive. Anyone have any advice?
This is completely an opinion but your GPA is great regardless. It sounds as if a double major in kinesiology might be more beneficial because it'll give you an advantage in the initial classes of a PT program. Study hard for your GRE and you will be conpetitive either way. A B is not bad at all..

Not sure where to post this but is anyone else in Chicago for Northwestern's orientation this weekend?

University: UC Berkeley
Major: Integrative Biology and Public Health (double major)
Overall GPA: 3.4
Pre-Req GPA: 3.2
GRE: 165 verbal, 158 quantitative, 4.0 writing

Extra-Curric: sorority membership VP, sorority president, Habitat for Humanity, Girls on the Run coach, anatomy lab instructor, 1 year of work in a research lab

Volunteer: 90 hours outpatient, 40 hours outpatient pediatric, 75 hours inpatient

Applied: GWU, UMBC, University of the Pacific, Samuel Merritt, UCSF/SFSU, UNC, AT Still, Chapman, USC

Acceptances: GWU (1/22), Samuel Merritt (2/02)

Waitlist: USC (3/1)

Interviews: GWU (1/08), Samuel Merritt (1/29-1/30)

Thanks! I was guaranteed a spot in the program at Hartford (why I only applied to one school). Hartford's program is a 4+3. I applied to another school even though I already knew I had a spot at Hartford because Rutgers is a little cheaper and I could live at home so wouldn't have to worry about living expenses. What do you want to know about Hartford? I would happy to answer your questions!

Oh okay! well I am glad it worked out for you. I applied and interviewed at Rutgers South, still waiting to hear back. Do you know how good the program is at University of Hartford? Not too much information out there about the program. 🙂 thanks!

The program's website has some information: http://www.hartford.edu/enhp/academics/rehabilitation-sciences/physical-therapy-dpt/

The program at Hartford is decent. I believe the ultimate NPTE pass rate is in the low 90s. The program is a part of the Department of Rehab Sciences (they have a masters program in prosthetics and orthotics as well) within the college of education, nursing, & health professions. There's 12 full time faculty members and there's a fair amount of adjuncts, but I do not know much about them. A few of the full time professors are clinical specialists. At the moment, Hartford's class size is 40 or 45 students but rumor has it they're looking to expand the class size to 60 students. Right now, all of the classes meet on the fourth floor of Dana Hall (the science building), but they are supposed to be putting in more classrooms & faculty offices specifically for the PT program in the first floor of a dorm on the other side of campus (which we think is odd) and the construction is supposed to be finished for when classes start at the beginning of June. Every student works on a long-term research project. Every year, faculty members develop a research project and then students sign up for which project interests them the most. I'm pretty sure you start working on the study in the spring of your first year. You do a poster board presentation at ENHP day in the spring of your second year and then your final research presentation in November of your 3rd year, right before clinicals start. You're required to travel for at least one of your clinicals, I forget what the distance requirement is, but it is a certain number of miles away from the school and your hometown. If you're interested in it, there's a Physical Therapy Student Association and there's a PT clinic on campus that is owned by one of the faculty members.

If you ever have any other questions, just let me know!

I've been checking in on this thread since last spring and it really helped me to narrow down my choices and see where I think my stats could match up, so I figured I'd post now since I have some news to report!

Thank you so much for the information and help! That sounds like a great program, I am from central Jersey so staying in-state would be ideal, but I still might apply to Hartford. Thanks again and good luck at rutgers north!

Thanks! I'm from central Jersey as well! My class at Hartford is much smaller than usual (we are in the low to mid 20s right now) so that could work in your favor, should you decide to apply.

Called temple on 1/6, and they completely deny the obvious. I don't understand why they don't level with us.

Called temple on 1/6, and they completely deny the obvious. I don't understand why they don't level with us.

My thought would be that because it's still early they are going to lose people to cheaper options over the next couple of months, so it would benefit them to keep a waitlist/be able to hold more interviews if needed.
Did you interview at Temple?

Called temple on 1/6, and they completely deny the obvious. I don't understand why they don't level with us.
Wow..what did they say? I still haven't heard from Temple so I haven't been officially accepted/denied yet, so I'm assuming that might mean they are still considering us in case people drop their spots? But I just don't understand why they can't give us a direct answer. So annoying!!

--UPDATE! Had a last minute interview at UNMC this weekend, they called me in off the waitlist two days before I had to be there. Said they would let us know by the end of the month. Still have my interview at Mercer this upcoming weekend. Anyone heard from DMU? Still have yet to hear anything from them. Also got my first real rejection with no waitlist from University of Iowa. It was hard to see that but just trying to keep looking forward. --

So I've always looked over this thread to see the different stats and which schools everyone has heard from so far and have finally decided to post my stats:

University: Truman State University
Major: Exercise Science
Minors: Spanish, Psychology, Biology
Overall GPA: 3.47
Pre-req GPA: 3.24
GRE: V-155, Q-150, AW-4.5

Extra Curriculars: Anatomy TA for 1.5 years, involved in Exercise Science Research for 1 year, Physical Therapy Technician at an outpatient orthopedic clinic for almost 1 year, Pre-PT/OT Club President for 1 year, active member in a service sorority for 2.5 years (was the fundraising chair for the local YMCA)

Shadowing: countless work hours for my tech job at outpatient orthopedic, 20 hospital hours, 14 SNF hours, and 11 school pediatric hours

Applied: Regis University, University of Iowa, Des Moines University, University of Nebraska Medical Center, AT Still University, Mercer University, Elon University, Rockhurst University, East Tennessee State University

Interviews: Rockhurst University, Mercer University
Waitlists for Interviews: UNMC, Regis University (they said they've had over 1,400 applicants this cycle), Elon University
Waitlists for Programs: Rockhurst

Rejections: University of Iowa
Acceptances: NONE

--Bummed about Rockhurst but they weren't my first choice, getting ready for my interview at Mercer, but curious if anyone has heard from DMU or University of Iowa? All I've heard from them is when they first received my application and nothing since. Also, haven't had any outright rejections from anyone which is positive, but tired of seeing the word "waitlist" in all my emails +pissed+. Also AT Still said I probably won't be hearing from them until the new year, but that all the interview spots are currently filled --

REJECTION AND INTERVIEWS
A late rejection update from Samuel Merritt from the end of December and two interviews invitations from Montana and George Fox on the same day! I have currently accepted the Montana interview; however, that status might change as I enter my first round of interviews this week at the University of Utah. Depending on how confident I feel after my interviews this week (and hopefully after more feedback from my schools), I may change my mind about pursuing Montana because their interviews at the end of next month. As for George Fox, this will be my second interview with them. I do take preference with schools that are closer to my region, so I am 100% certain that I will be interviewing with them on Feb. 5th.

This is my 2nd year applying, and unfortunately the verification process took a very long time this year, which I'm afraid might lessen my chances. I just received the supplemental for SBU today and have to scramble to get in finished by the due date 1/15. Might end up applying to more schools but trying to be optimistic this year, even with my low pre-req GPA.🙁

Hello,

I have an interview with them too and I have also been to a few interviews. What I can provide to you is, first get business attire such as a suit (recommended to be tailored), second have someone look over both your resume and cover-letter and lastly research interview questions. Here are a few links that helped me http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/what-to-wear-to-interview.980373/ https://theptstudent.wordpress.com/2013/01/23/how-to-survive-the-pt-school-interview/ http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/how-to-become-a-pt-ot-interview-advice-video.1104200/ . I hope this all helps and if you need someone to look over your cover letter I will gladly proof read it.

Best of luck

If you don't mind me asking, when did you hear from USF?
December 16th! A friend of mine heard back on that same day also. Both said that we "did not meet one or more of their minimum admissions criteria."

Yes, it is definitely frustrating.

Where else do you apply to?

I feel like that happened to a ton of people. I got the same email and really had no idea what was missing. I got in or was offered an interview at everywhere else I applied, but got that vague email from USF. It seems to be a trend on here - lots of people posted about getting the same thing. Very strange.
