I still haven't heard back from a few schools, but it looks like I am going to try again next year. The two schools I got into (LIU & USA) are crazy expensive. Going to go back to comm college to bring up my GPA, gain in-patient hours, and more experience. Hopefully i'll get more options next year!

jenn unfortunate to hear, GPA is a very large factor for many schools because it's what they have to go off of for academic prowess for grad school.

Perhaps, while you bring your cum & sci GPA up with CC credits the best you can, aim for a an 1150+ on your GRE w/ 500 verbal/quant with 4.0+ Writing.

Your volunteer hours are quite incredible, that's whole lotta time!.. I only had just over 200 but in 5 settings and did very well. You shouldn't need many more PT volunteer hours unless you wanted to try >50 in another setting like SNF's to get your feet wet. Otherwise have many writers read your personal statement and keep up with EC's you enjoy.

Apply to each and every one of those CA PT in-state schools, even if they're MPT's (MPT=DPT=Sitting NPTE Exam). They're a excellent value.
Good luck! 👍

O.M.G! I got the call on my lunch break from shadowing a PT on Wednesday.

wow. :wow:

I'm in! I was so defeated Tuesday night, registering for summer classes and recalculating my gpa, over and over... just imagining going through the daunting task of reapplying and working out my timing in my head for EVERYTHING!

What a relief! And all my dreams will be coming true! I'm still a little in shock.

I have been accepted off the waitlist into the
Bellarmine University DPT Class of 2013! :soexcited:

Advice: Never give up. Always try no matter what anyone says. Sell yourself in your essay and your interview. I sold the heck out of my minor (medical humanities). Show them what makes you special! And never stop updating them on your progress. I let them know how many volunteer hours I had by mid march, the grade I made in an express AnP class that was done by Spring Break. I sent formal follow up emails after my interview and checking on my status. Stay in contact. Never stop working. It will happen! An applicant is a whole package, grades, GRE, communication skills, passion, and essay. If you are lacking in any of those, you better bring it in all of the others! Good luck to everyone still waiting and looking to reapply.

Also, gpa doesn't tell your story. If they ask you what happened, share! My grades were rocky because I was a biomedical engineering major my first two years of college. Then, I changed to Bio major premed and had to work my hiney off to finish. But I explained to them that i wasn't confused, I knew I wanted to help people (strong interest in prosthetics) but I wanted to interact with the patients, not work in a lab or at a desk. I wanted to see the change in someone's life. I wanted to work with them, along side them. I knew what I wanted in life, it was just a matter of putting it into a box that is a profession. Show them who you are. And PRAY!

Congrats on getting into BU. I am from Louisville and BU is a great program and in a great city (I am a bit biased)!! I have a lot of friends who are either in the program now or have recently graduated! Good luck and God bless!

Thanks Agwebby! I'm beyond ecstatic right now! And I loved my visit to KY for the interview so I'm really excited to get out there already. I'm in Texas right now preparing for my migration with all my stuff 🙂

Hey guys, so I'm an Exercise Science major with a a minor in Psychology. I'll be applying for PT schools this Fall.
Overall GPA: 3.59
Pre-Req GPA: 3.26

I'm still currently taking one last science pre-req (physics II) and will be taking the GRE this summer.

I have over 100 hours of shadowing mostly at inpatient clinics but also with a home health PT and at a rehabilitation clinic within a hospital. I'm looking to get more inpatient hours this summer, as well.

I'm getting really nervous about applying to PT schools soon, especially because of my GPA.. Do I have a chance of getting in????? Words of wisdom would be much appreciated. I've known I've wanted to be a PT since I was a junior in high school and have been so passionate about it for five years since. Now that it's so close I'm so nervous!!

Thanks!

Are PT essays supposed to be more on the creative side or informative side?

Depends on the topic. But at the least, it should be personal, meaning it will be both creative and informative. It's not an English essay. They have the GRE AW part for that. It should show your interest, how that interest came about, what you plan to contribute, etc, but it shouldn't be boring. Gotta have some pathos in that essay you'll write to really get to the readers on the admissions committee. 👍

You can have any of the accepted/current students on SDN look at your essay to proofread and such. We'd be more than happy to help. Just PM any one of us.

Where did you get accepted? I'm looking to go in to UM or FIU and have a 3.0 and taking the GRE now in the summer. I will have more than 400 volunteer hours.

GRE: 650 Q, 580 V, 4.0 AW

Volunteer: 400+

Observation: 12 Outpatient, 32 acute, more planned in pediatrics & geriatrics

Applied: KU, Emory, NYU, Wash U in St. Louis, Univ. of Miami, Univ. of Florida

Acceptances: Got into a top 20 schl so far, if you accepted me and you're reading this, I'm coming 🙂

These schools do consider your whole application so if your grades aren't stellar, there is still hope (extra currics, GRE, volunteer etc.). I looked on here before applying and all I saw was 3.8 GPA's and thought, wow, depressing, I don't stand a chance. It's not how many times you fall, it's how many times you get up... moving on, blackchiney ah cd killa.

I am a Health Sciences major in the Pre-PT option. My gpa is currently at 3.28 and will have two Pre-reqs pending when I apply (Chem 2 and Physics 2). I am starting on my volunteer hours in a few weeks and taking the GRE next week. I am VERY worried this will look bad on my applications because I somewhat left everything to the last minute, but I really want to get into PT school by next fall. Have any of you guys been in the same situation?

I don't have a lot of observation hours either. I'm terrified after seeing all these people with hundreds of hours and I barely have the minimum AND my GRE stinks! I'm applying this fall as well and I'm really hoping I can get in somewhere! My stats are:
Major- Exercise science
cum GPA- 3.61
science/math - 3.8
GRE-980
Involvement- Chi Omega (held leadership positions), Rho Lambda (women's leadership sorority), Exercise Science club, Order of Omega,
-employed at my schools learning services center every semester
What do you guys think?! :-( any ideas of places that might take me near Wisconsin?

Leigh Ann,
You have strong numbers minus your GRE, but I believe your GRE is solid enough for admittance into a lot of programs. Are you only looking to apply to schools in Wisconsin? It may not be a bad idea to keep an open mind about schools out of state. That is not because of your numbers, but I find that you may not want to take excellent options off of the table if you can help it. I would contact the schools that you are looking to apply to, and ask them what they consider a competitive application. It's better to be proactive early in the application process then trying to scramble late. Best wishes to you!👍

I will have about 200 hours of observation come the end of August and am considering submitting my application then. I am wondering however if I should wait to submit my app because I will start work full time in August and rack up a lot more hours in the following months. Would it be better to apply with 200 hours and get the app in early, or wait a month and apply with 400 hours?

I think applying earlier is better. A lot of schools have rolling admissions, and some that are not look more favorably on early applications.
PTCAS takes up to a month to process your app. Then, they can mess things up and delay your application for a month or more in addition to that, so I'd do it early.
Plus, you can list hours as being in progress, and then simply have it updated after a month.
Good luck!

applying this summer/fall any advice?

Is applying to around 20 schools common? I'm just trying to do my best to get into "A" school this cycle. This is my first time applying.

I applied to PA schools last fall, but waited until the last minute and picked three schools. I was accepted to one, but realized it wasn't what I was looking for in a career, and I've been volunteering in a PT clinic for the past year and didnt realize what was "right before my eyes" the whole time.

Anyway, quick facts:
Major: Biological Sciences

3.58 overall
3.6 <--> 3.8 pre-req GPA (depending on the school)
3.40 science GPA
GRE 1120 (680Q 440V 4.5W)

- Various extracurrics throughout college, tutoring etc...
- Hundreds of activities room volunteering hours in a nursing home
- About 400 PT observation/volunteer hours in 3 settings (hopefully getting in some inpatient hospital before I apply in the next few weeks).
- Finally, I became a full-time PT aide this January after volunteering so much.

So, obviously nothing is certain, but is applying to 20 schools excessive?

Corks, with your stats, you don't need to apply to 20 schools. I don't know how many YOU want to apply to but your stats seem pretty solid.

Maybe apply to a safety school, then the rest should be where you want to go. 20 is pretty high for a person with your stats.

Just started working on my PTCAS application today but I thought I would put my info so far on here and see what the competition is like this year 😉
Degree: Bachelors of Health Science in Physiology
Overall GPA: 3.56
Pre-req GPA: Dont know yet
GRE: 1250 (570 V, 680 Q, 5 AW)
Volunteer/Observation hours: About 150 right now
Applying to: Wash U-STL, NAU, KU, Midwestern-Glendale, U of Washington, Pacific University, maybe a few others.

I am pretty low on the observation hours but I work full time and don't have much opportunity. Also, I am trying to decided whether or not to re-take the GRE. Does anyone know if they take the highest score for each section if you take it multiple times?

Most schools seem to take the highest score from each section, but some take the highest set of scores from one sitting. You can usually find out on the school's website, but if not, you can e-mail them. There's no set standard.

If I were you, I would not retake it because you already have good scores. I think the average for all test takers is around 1050, and the average for most competitive programs is around 1150.

I know my overall GPA isn't that great, but the schools I am applying to only look at the last 60 credits or the last 45 credits of undergrad. I am still nervous though because I am only applying to 4 schools.I am hoping the fact that I have good recommendations and was one of the top students in my major helps. I also have 2 under grad research projects under my belt, I presented one of them at the American College of Sports Medicine regional conference.

ANY Advise from anyone would be helpful.

I have similar-ish stats, same GRE, only a 4.0 on AW, 3.7 overall GPA, probably about 3.5 pre-req GPA, but only 80 hours. Are you from Kansas? I was looking at KU earlier when I was trying to find a "safety" school (I know they don't really exist) and they really favor Kansas residents...Have you found any that seem less competitive?

I think all of the state schools are like that. I've looked at Colorado, Washington, and New Mexico and they all ask questions about residency. I am not from Kansas but I did part of my undergrad at Mizzou, and plan on applying there as my safety school because it doesnt use PTCAS. I figure there will be fewer applicants but they only accept 35.

I am just starting to fill out the PTCAS, but here is where I stand so far:

Major: Biology, GWU (2003 grad)
Overall GPA:3.67
Prereq GPA: about the same as overall
GRE: 530V, 670Q, still waiting on AW

Observation hours:Will have close to 100 by the end of the month and even more by the end of the summer.

Extracurriculars:As you can see, I am a non-trad student and I had plenty of extracurriculars when I was in undergrad. Since the-I have worked for the Red Cross for 2.5 years (with other jobs prior to that), a member of the Family Readiness Group for my husband's Army Reserve Unit, I have played rugby on and off and I just joined the PTA at my daughter's school. I have 2 kids that take up most of my free time.

Applying to: GWU, Marymount, University of Maryland-Baltimore, Shennandoah, Columbia, possibly others

My concern is that, although I have wanted to be a PT for a while, with my husband being active duty Army until recently and having 2 kids at home I wasn't able to begin my observation hours until this past June. I don't want schools to think that I just waited until the last minute and crammed them in. I still have A&P II to take this fall and I feel like I am lacking in extracurriculars. Can I include my undergrad extracurriculars on my application? Any thoughts?
