GPA's, GRE's, XTRA's, ACCEPTANCES

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@CSCS206 well after reading what you wrote I have no idea why they wouldn't have accepted you. I would have. It may have just been the sheer overwhelming number of applicants. It does seem like they want you to have a high score on the GRE for UW at least. EWU not so much. All the schools had a huge increase in their applicant pool and only take 35-50ish students so when you think about the odds if they get almost 1,000 applicants the odds are very small. That's why I applied to 9 schools all over the U.S. just in case.

@RP3723 - yesterday! So I hope you hear from them soon. 🙂http://forums.studentdoctor.net/members/rp3723.669945/

I finally got in! That wait was brutal, but I couldn't be any happier with the school I got into. Can't wait to start!!

Can't thank this forum enough for the helpful information and interesting reads while waiting out this process!!

Elon University '15
Major: Exercise Science
Overall Undergrad GPA: 3.77
Pre-Req GPA: 3.48
Extra Curricular: Elon College Fellow - 2 years of biomechanics based research, Tri Delta: Vice President of Administration & New Member Educator, Phi Beta Kappa, Habitat for Humanity, America Reads Tutor, Biomechanics TA

Applying: University of Hartford, Northeastern, University of Pittsburgh, George Washington University, University of South Florida, Springfield College, Washington University in St.Louis

Waitlist: UPitt (12/4), USF (1/26), Wash U (12/17)
Accepted: Wash U (2/12), UHart (2/18) & Northeastern (3/5)
Rejected: GW & Springfield

Now time to make the final decision!

if you dont mind me asking, how did you get notified by Northeastern?

As a result, I did everything in my power to improve my application for the following year (the current cycle). I earned my B.S. (top of my class, undergrad commencement speaker finalist), brought my pre-req GPA from a 3.55 to a 3.95, logged over 100 additional hours in two settings (expanding experience to include acute/sub-acute inpatient postsurgical ortho, neuro, pediatric oncology, and more) and added even more outpatient hours. I've also TA'd and tutored for biology, anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, and also helped out as a guest speaker for a kinesiology course. I participated in research, worked in a biomechanics lab, first authored abstracts and presented at regional symposia. I earned my NSCA-CSCS title (with >95% on both sections!) and I included two stronger PT LORs and a LOR from my academic advisor (former PT/med school admission committee member on the eastcoast). I also sprinkled in a variety of volunteer fundraisers/community service involvement.

You would be a shoe-in at plenty of schools in other states, particularly private schools if you've got the $$$.

UNE is my top choice. Would re-taking my GRE be worth it at this point in order for me to get off the wait list?

Doubtful. Technically possible, and could depend on your position on the waitlist. But in general I'd say pretty doubtful. Call the school and ask just to be safe.

You would be a shoe-in at plenty of schools in other states, particularly private schools if you've got the $$$.
Yeah, I would have believed that until I got waitlisted at George Fox. But then again, a lot of qualified PNWers that are getting rejected by UW, EWU, UPS are coming in hot too. Convenience and region are very important to me, unfortunately. I'll cover most of the schools on the Westcoast next cycle if I don't make it into GFU from the waitlist.

@CSCS206 well after reading what you wrote I have no idea why they wouldn't have accepted you. I would have. It may have just been the sheer overwhelming number of applicants. It does seem like they want you to have a high score on the GRE for UW at least. EWU not so much. That's why I applied to 9 schools all over the U.S. just in case

To my knowledge, UW had nearly 1,400 applicants. I knew the numbers were significantly against me. I do agree that my GRE is a weakness in my application. I wish there was a way for the committee to look beyond GRE/GPA (although I'm comfortable with my GPA, esp prereqs) because this career is weighted so much more on successful patient interactions and outcomes. Not to overlook the importance of being academically competent, as measured by grades and standardized test scores, but I focused on obtaining a wide variety of observation experience with unique populations. And I've really made a push to highlight my research background because I believe evidence-based practice and being a regular consumer of the literature is what may very well transcend this profession from being a tertiary preventative health measure as a consequence of injury/disability (by this time potentially requiring additional specialists and posing more complicated comorbidities) to a profession that matches the level of rigor not only associated with a doctorate-level education, but the increasingly difficult challenges associated with simply applying! Understanding and contributing to research, though not the most important thing in an applicant, should be valued nearly as much as clinical experience. This is another reason why I really want to attend UW. Unfortunately, they weigh their applicants heavily on GPA/GRE. Eastern and UPS have explicitly came out to me and said, that they do not focus on research. It's incorporated, but not emphasized. As much as I'm about patient care and treating movement disabilities that burden modern-day society, I want to look at the bigger picture... And unfortunately that might be my problem. Perhaps I should step back and focus more on the clinical proficiencies. But I would only be holding back and lying to myself. I'm torn. /rant 😵

Honestly @CSCS206, I think that perhaps more than anything you may have just been the victim of the stochastic nature of the admissions process.

I very much agree with your thinking. At many programs, unfortunately, a background in research is not particularly helpful and clinical experience is weighted much more heavily. With that said, you have over 600 hours in multiple settings. Obtaining more observation hours is not going to increase your chances of admission significantly. If you want to spend more time in PT clinics standing around doing nothing, then by all means. But you've pretty much maxed out the benefit you are going to get from observation hours at most schools at this point. You could get a paid job as a PT tech, but considering you already have a decent job I would say that it would be a lot more trouble than it's worth. Observation hours are not a weakness for your app.

UNLV has a substantial research requirement for the students in their program. Some do case studies and literature reviews/meta-analyses to meet the requirement. Many get involved in real original research, plenty of which eventually gets published. I believe my background in research helped me get in there. I was coming from out of state, and my background is entirely in cell biology and cancer, but they were very interested in my research at the interview and I believe it helped me out. At NAU (which does not have a focus on student involvement in research), on the other hand, I believe my heavy background in cell biology may have actually been detrimental. I have plenty of PT experiences too, and I can't ever know for sure, but I think NAU just didn't value my experience with the research process for what it is.

If there is any possible way a move to Nevada becomes feasible, I would highly recommend you apply to UNLV. Between your PT experience, research experience and various extracurriculars that you have, I bet they would love you there. They also seem like they are relatively willing to forgive low-ish GRE scores. The con as far as the numbers game is that their class size is only 34 every year, but I believe they also end up pulling a couple dozen off the wait list by the time school starts too.

I totally understand the desire to stay local though and am in the same boat as you on that one. Here's hoping for an admittance to George Fox by the skin of your teeth. 🙂

Agreed. I am wondering if also, having experience in very specific settings makes me appear less malleable as a student. Also, I included my background as a certified personal trainer (NCSF), strength & conditioning specialist (NSCA), and exercise physiologist (ACSM) which definitely allowed me to work one-on-one with the human body. Perhaps past experiences like these are looked down upon because of philosophical conflictions in the field? Idunno...

I appreciate the optimism though! I've done some lurking around and I can account for at least two or three individuals who rejected their acceptance/position on the waitlist so I'm slowly creeping up there.....

You may be over-thinking it...I doubt the schools that have repeatedly rejected you really gave this much thought/analysis to your app...maybe, but I doubt it.

Jeez does this post feel great to write. After 3 application cylces and a whole lot of stress I got in to one of my top programs. Don't ever let someone tell you that you can't do something because YOU CAN. I faced so much adversity during my road to become a PT. My stats aren't the best but I retook classes, had awesome LORs, lots of observation hours, extra currics, and a good essay. My GRE is horrendous but I am an awful test taker and proud that I even took it. I applied to schools that looked at the applicant holistically. This really helped me because despite my low stats everything else helped me get in. Gahhhhh I am so excited to start in July! I wish everyone the best this application cycle! Congrats to those who are accepted. Good luck to those still waiting. If you have to reapply just know- it is not the end of the world. It is still possible, you may need a little polishing but thats okay no one ever said anything worth having is easy. If anyone ever needs advice etc feel free to PM me or email me. Also check out my blog : dptknow.tumblr.com . I have posted advice on there since I have been through this process quite a few times! Lastly thanks for the amazing support SDN community ! Without you all I would never have stayed sane, you're all the bomb!!!!!

Congrats! I struggled with general chemistry and physics as well. Luckily, I took a handful of organic chemistry and biochemistry classes that I used instead. Also, some programs are willing to accept my biomechanics courses instead of physics... So my prereq GPA is pretty competitive but my overall sciences is not spectacular. I've devated going back to do physics and general chemistry again regardless.

Again, congrats!

Stay hopeful . There is still an opportunity . You are on many wait lists and still have to hear from a few places. Staying positive is the only way you'll get through this! Many of the schools you applied to are very competitive to get in to. It may just take some time. March is the month that schools see a lot of movement in their classes. PM me if you need advice I was just in your situation.

GRE: 157V 150Q 4.0AW

Extra-Curric: Not applicable due to being a nontraditional student, when I was in college I volunteered at the humane society shelter and was in the outing club. Currently I play hockey as well.

Observation: 36 outpatient orthopedics 30 Nursing home with subacute patients and residents 12 Pediatrics with a PT working in a school 2 Home Care. I would have liked to do more but working full time and taking classes makes it hard to fit observation hours in

Applied: Umass Lowell, BU, Simmons, MGHIHP, UNE, Northeastern.

Acceptances: Simmons!

Rejections: Umass Lowell, UNE, Northeastern, BU- was originally wait listed but the class filled.

Interviews: MGH 1/31

Waitlist: MGH- received an email that the class is full but they are keeping a waiting list.

There is hope for those who graduate with a low GPA, I graduated from college with a 2.86 GPA when I went back to school to take pre-requisites I made sure to get all A's.

I am glad to have the one acceptance at Simmons as I was worried I would not get any acceptances.

I'm also on Miami's alternate list, so obviously I' tell you to go with MGH lol but congrats! when did they let you know and do you have any idea how many people are on the alternate list or if it is ranked? I've been trying to reach someone at Miami to ask but am never able to reach anyone. I was accepted at other schools, so want to get an idea of my chances as Miami was my #1 choice.

They let me know today via email and they also left me a voicemail saying that a spot opened up and that I'd been accepted. I got the original wait list notification on march 3rd. I assume that they accepted a bunch of people on that date as well. As I'm sure you know, once you get the official letter in the mail you have 10 days to respond with a deposit. Since it was around two weeks ago that I got wait listed I'm guessing that they sent out a handful of acceptances off the wait list today based on how many of the acceptances from march 3rd declined or didn't meet the deadline to send a deposit in. Unfortunately, I have no idea how their wait list works and whether or not it's ranked. I definitely assumed that the alternate status meant I wasn't getting in and was very shocked by the acceptance today. Keep up hope, good luck!

Obviously my GPA was not very good, but I felt like my GRE scores were at least competitive. I also don't have the number of observation hours that a lot of other people do. In my opinion my letters of recommendation (1 employer/doctor, 2 PTs, 1 professor) were strong but it's hard to say having not actually seen them, however I am very confident the one from my employer was particularly strong because I have basically interacted with him every day for the past 2 years. My experience working in a physiatry office is one thing that I think set me apart (I discussed how seeing things from the physician perspective was a unique experience in my essay, allowing me to see from the outside how PTs are a part of a health care team). Another thing was completing the FMS Professional Level 1 training, it is a really outstanding course and very relevant to PT I would highly suggest looking into it (I was specifically asked about it during one of my interviews). I wasn't very smart when applying and ended up spending more money than I should have, because it was hard to get a sense of which programs took a more holistic approach to reviewing applications. From this experience I would confidently say that all of the schools that considered me (UNLV, UPitt, Regis) were more holistic in their evaluation. I can't speak on the others because it wouldn't surprise me if my GPAs were too much for the rest of my application to overcome.
