Cum GPA is low because I was initially an engineering major for my first year at school. Since switching to exercise science, my GPA has been between 3.2-3.8 each semester, have continued to make dean's list etc. I can explain that in my application and I feel like 70% of the battle for me is having someone realize that and just giving me an interview.

I am being realistic and i know that I will likely get rejected from most schools, since I am applying to some pretty good programs. Anyone wanna chance me for fun? Just curious really. Thanks in advance! 🙂

For anyone who applied to Columbia and is wondering how I've been accepted already - have no fear. This is the second application cycle for me, and they were the only school I applied to last cycle (applied late in the game). I was invited out for an interview, but didn't quite make the cut. I stayed in very close contact with Dr. Krasinski and Cynthia Worthington, and instead of making me fly up to New York again, they conducted the interview over the phone and essentially treated me like an ED applicant.

I'm also somewhat of a non-traditional applicant. Graduated back in 2011, had been a stock broker for a few years and then day traded for a couple of years while knocking out PT prereqs. I was in a pretty bad accident a few weeks after graduating from UT, which required a ton of PT, flipped on the proverbial light-bulb, and here we are.

Congrats on your acceptance!! That's awesome! Do you have any tips for the interview? I've seen people on other forums who've said that their interview days were pretty relaxing and they're more like conversations rather than a lot of structured questions but I'm not sure what to believe haha. I've been preparing for answers to general common question but I'm just not sure what else to expect because Columbia will be my first interview I'm attending so I'm pretty nervous!

Yeah, so being from Texas, I wanted the entire process to be as seamless as possible, so I stayed at the "Edge Hotel," right down the street from the neuroscience center where they conducted the interview. I didn't have to worry about New York transportation, didn't need to wake up super early, etc... So I thought that was a good move. It was literally like a block or two away from the campus, and just sort of got the day started on the right foot. If you're already from New York, you're probably already comfortable and ready to rock and roll. So on to interview day:

Super relaxed. It started with all of us in the same room, kind of quiet at first... waiting for students to come in and sit. They had a little bit of breakfast/snack food available, coffee, etc. The staff came to the front of the room, along with 7 or 8 current PT students, introduced themselves, covered the curriculum, etc etc, but the whole thing was very conversational. Everyone will receive a folder that segregates the interviewees into three different groups. One group will do their interviews first (separately). One group will tour the facilities, and the last group stays behind and hangs out with the current students. They are awesome by the way, they know you are nervous and they try to get you to forget about the nerves.

So the part you're most interested in, the actual interview:
Some students were interviewed by two staffers, and some only by one, and none of us really knew why, just random I guess. They know your background, they've read your essays, and based on your supplemental essay, they will know what kind of PT interests you the most (where do you see yourself after PT school)... so... they pair you with a Professor whose background most aligns with your interests. For example, I was interviewed by two professors- my undergrad was in Neurobiology, so one of the professors in my interview taught the neuro classes. Also, Dr. Krasinski (the department head) is from Texas, so she also interviewed me. They just try to pair you with a faculty member who shares your interests.

The only questions they asked that I felt were just typical interview questions were: Why PT? Why Columbia? (super important, they really really stress trying to find people that fit their program, and not necessarily a 4.0 student). And what's a strength/weakness? Other than that, it was just a conversation. Where are you from? What do you like to do? How was your shadowing experiences? Hobbies? And on and on... but if the way I'm writing this up makes it feel very robotic and structured, it really wasn't. It was chill, and legitimately just felt like we were getting to know each other. It was fun.

Sorry for the long-winded response!

It was a pretty relaxed day. The main director is with you for most of the day talking about different projects that students are working on and the general information about the program. After the introduction the group is broken into smaller groups to either observe current students in a problem based learning situation, the interview, or a break. After that the director brings in different coordinators ( financial aid/ housing etc) to talk more about the program. You also get lunch where you can meet with some of the current students. The interview was one on one and very conversational. They are looking for what is not on paper and just want to get to know you. Good luck on your interview!!

When did you hear back from these schools after you submitted PTCAS?

@dcrawford212

Hey! I was accepted to both Temple University and University of Delaware as well and had to make that difficult decision between the two since I loved both of them. I'm learning towards University of Delaware for several reasons. I really liked that it was a 2.5 years instead of 3 years to save some money and along with that I also liked that they had their own clinic on site (for me that was the game changer). Although Temple had the pro bono clinic on site, it wasn't nearly as big as the one at Delaware. They both have integrated clinical experiences but Temples is only two half days during the Fall and Spring Semester the first year while there are three at Delaware & last all semester long which I think allows for some more clinical experience. Also, at Temple the cadavers for Gross Anatomy were shared with the med students so you are only able to use half the cadaver while at Delaware the whole cadaver will be used and not shared.

Either way, both programs are very impressive and in my opinion you couldn't go wrong with either one. 🙂 Congratulations on getting accepted!

Thanks for the helpful reply. Good luck!

Hey, I am currently a second year PT student at UD, and we actually have 6 clinical experiences. Three are completed while you are taking classes, and we call these "integrated clinical experiences" (ICEs for short), and the other three are our external affiliations which are the 10 week long clinicals you were talking about that take place during our last 6-7 months of the program. Since you are already familiar with the external affils, I'll give you more info about the ICEs - two of them are completed in UD's very own PT clinic which has two sections: a neurological and older adult clinic (which we call NOA) and the sports and orthopedic clinic (S&O). For both of these, students work in the clinic 6 hours per week on either a MWF schedule (2 hrs/day) or a TR schedule (3 hrs/day) throughout the semester (about 78 hours total). ICEs aren't observation hours - all students working in the clinic have their own schedules, treat their own patients, have to do their own SOAP notes, and even have to do billing. Obviously you have a CI in the clinic whenever you are treating to help guide you if you need help, but they expect you to be pretty independent so that you can develop the clinical skills you need to survive in the "real world." The last ICE is a pediatric rotation at Nemours AI Dupont Childrens' Hospital in Wilmington, and that is only 2 weeks long for about 20 hours total; for this one you aren't treating patients, and it is mostly observational, which is a bit of a bummer if you're interested in peds like me, but the good thing about UD is that they allow you to choose where you want to do your external affils at, and if you want to do a peds rotation, you can.

Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Hey, thanks for the reply - I really appreciate it.

Just one question in regards to out-of-house clinical rotations

How much input do you have in proposing (and ultimately choosing) a new clinical site? I am very confident that I want to specialize in sport orthopedics, but I have a list of clinical sites that I believe would be extremely valuable. I believe these sites will give me huge windows for academic growth and clinical experience, but also (and possibly more importantly) professional networking for immediate job placement in a sports setting.

Do you mind sharing how many questions were asked and how long the interview session was? What were your impressions of the program? My interview with Temple is in a early November. Thanks!

There were probably 2-4 individual questions asked to each applicant (questions were off some paper all the current PT students had), mostly general stuff like "describe a time you experienced failure and how you dealt with it" etc etc. Group interview lasted about approximately 45min depending on the faculty member followed by a campus tour.

From looking at their curriculum, I think they're program is slightly underrated. They have 4 clinicals (3 12 weeks and 1 6 week). They offer 3 Movement courses which I believe is very essential although I don't know the exact content of the courses (downside is total credits is 130, which is more than most schools). Students and faculty are very nice, and just want to get a sense of your personality and character. Campus and classrooms might not be the most "high-end", even cadavers are shared with med students - but I dont think that will impede learning. The deal for me being able to have a large influence on clinical decisions.

Just be relaxed and genuine.

I do feel that the interview was my downfall, being it the first one ever and letting the nerves get the best of me. I realize that the only thing I can do is to digest this experience, and I'm going to make sure that I nail the interview at Drexel this Friday! It's not over yet.

Why do you think it was your downfall? What did they ask?

@DPT1720: Rosalind Franklin is one of the few schools that do the MMI format, so the interview consisted of stations that asks you to either role-play, answer ethical questions, etc. I came out the interview feeling like crap because I stumbled on a lot of the questions, and I'll bet my nervous body language did not suit well with the interviewers. Reflecting on my experience, I also should have made more effort to talk about my personal experiences at certain points. At the moment, I had a difficult time incorporating personal experiences in my answers. Overall, I do feel that these kinds of interviews favor extroverted people, and I can only learn from this experience.

Yeah but that's strange because you're stats are awesome! They based so much on an interview

It's a bummer for sure, but I was invited for an interview because they knew I had the academic capabilities and the experiences to succeed in their program, much like everyone else that was invited. I wasn't able to give a good impression to the admissions committee, and I'm going to learn from it.

Extra: I ended up declining ISU and Marshall's interviews and also declined Walsh once I found out I was accepted to MSJ.

My academic career should give some people motivation. Look at my GPA - it's horrible! But I took the time to retake many Pre-reqs to raise pre-req GPA, Aced my last 60 credit hours, and knocked the GRE out of the park. I believe my clinical experience (PT tech job) also aided in this. Never give up!
