.Hello everybody (this is the University President addressing the whole student body):.
.Tremendous emphasis is put on campus safety at WesternU (hmmmm, that’s debatable). In addition to being patrolled 24 hours a day by Imperial Security (ironically, a fancy name for a lousy service), we have an excellent relationship with the Pomona Police Department (I would hope so after all the calls they get from our campus), which conducts safety seminars on campus (like bullet proof vest fittings?), in addition to being our guests for its own continuing education and training workshops (might as well train where you will have to use it). Our campus borders (about as securely guarded as getting into Mexico from CA) are checked regularly (we have one real police car patrol campus at night) by the Downtown Pomona Owners Association’s security firm (where our $480 a year parking pass that we have to buy to park within two blocks of campus); the parking lots around our campus are patrolled by Pomona Police (again, one car at night); and Imperial provides a nighttime escort for students to their cars and elsewhere on campus (when they answer our calls)..

.Nevertheless, despite all (really???) reasonable safeguards (that’s your opinion), bad things sometimes happen (like gang members missing their targets AND/OR Obama plan backfiring (no pun intended) to supplying Mexican Drug Cartels with US guns). On the evening of Sunday, September 23, a shooting incident five blocks south of campus – near Seventh and Eleanor streets – resulted in two bullets becoming lodged in two windows of our Health Education Center (true story, they are still stuck in the windows being held together with clear tape). WesternU was not the intended target of this incident (no it was probably some drug dealing gang banger "lean like a cholo" wanna be), but about 20 students were in the HEC at the time (there was one student a few yards from the upstairs window shot), so it was locked down (30 minutes after the shot WHEN the real Pomona Police made it to campus) while Security and WesternU staff sought information (like chickens with their heads cut off haha…). The HEC was taken out of lockdown (after they told the 20 students to stand outside the building near the path of the bullets) about 20 minutes later (after the 30 minute delay= 50 minutes later), and was evacuated as a precaution (but no other students were told who may have been planning on visiting their school turned crime scene)..

.While bad things happen that fall outside our ability to control (wow, impressive unintended pun relating to the uncontrollable stray bullets falling from the Pomona sky), our response to such incidents is something we can address (its about time! How many times do students have to bring up concerns about campus security??). The University’s response to Sunday’s incident is being evaluated for areas of improvement (great, maybe being them up to 20th century standards?), particularly in communicating events (wait, those walki-talkies actually work???) as we know them to involved students and staff as quickly as possible (less than a day after the event would be great, thanks). Our security team and Pomona Police (glad someone knows what they are doing) also met with students during a Town Hall meeting Monday night to take feedback (the same student/faculty concerns that have been brought up in the past NUMEROUS times including two weeks ago by us second years) about the incident (reminder- the school getting shot twice); this will be used in our response evaluation and our emergency planning going forward (glad we aren’t completely ignoring this event). I appreciate the participation and suggestions of everyone who took part (including all of your SDN tips/suggestions/emails)..

.Although any criminal incident is troubling (especially when students/faculty could be hurt/killed), such episodes are fairly rare on and/or immediately near the WesternU campus (is 5 blocks away included in the broad radius?). When they do occur (how about being proactive?), the University’s security staffing and protocols receive special focus (from the students/faculty pissed about all of our frustrations…). We will continue to work with WesternU’s Student Government Associationto make sure students’ concerns are thoroughly addressed, and with the Pomona Police Department to ensure that our campus is as safe as humanly possible for our students, staff, and visitors (FYI, the perspective students and visitors on campus have enjoyed pointing out and taking pictures with the broken panes of glass). It is one of our preeminent concerns and responsibilities (thanks for thinking of us before someone really gets hurt again!)..

.As always, I welcome your feedback on this topic (even satirical commentary anonymously published on the web?). Please e-mail me with your thoughts at [email protected], and please share this message with your spouses, parents, family and friends (including all of you on SDN!!!)..
.All the best (in not getting shot/stabbed/held up/molested... in lovely Pomona!),.

You go to school in Pomona where the crime rate is higher than whatever suburb you crawled out of. Two stray bullets hit the school because some gangbanger 5 blocks away missed another gangbanger, did you expect the president to be standing vigil so he could have leaped into their path and spared you the horror of having to b**ch online about it? Did you go to the meeting the next day with the Pomona PD and campus security where they spent hours listening to students and agreed to make changes in how they respond to crime near campus? Are you really blaming Obama for this??

Problem? Go to another school.

I actually kind of laugh about the whole situation, mainly how people responded to it. Students are acting as if every day walking to class is a life threatening situation..... it is not.

Incidences happen all the time at Western, almost 100% of them are avoidable but PEOPLE HAVE NO STREET SMARTS, it amazes me.

Example 1. Students father decides to take a nap in his car blocks away from campus with his window rolled down. Gets gun pulled on him and demanded to give up his wallet. Father says no (or so the story goes). Gunman runs off. How clueless can you be?

Example 2. Students continually have their cars broken into. Not a single incident has been in the patrolled parking structure. Some students are too cheap to buy a parking pass and park off campus. Some are too (lazy?) to park in the parking structure and park in the large parking lot that goes as far as two blocks from campus.

Some students are afraid to walk to their car at night. Fair enough, but its very easy to take a quick look around the parking lot for any characters lurking around. (people dont appear out of thin air). We also have security escorts (or male students) to walk you to your car. Walking with your iPod earbuds in, while staring at your phone as you text, may not be a good idea at midnight.

Its Pomona. Its ghetto. The single most important form of protection is common sense and street smarts. Unfortunately many students lack this.

...except there have been break ins in the parking structure.

False. In the past 2 years, my car has been broken into TWICE on WesternU's parking lots. I never leave valuables in the open, have a club on my steering wheel, and I drive a crappy 2000 Corrolla. I sent an email after each incident to the guy in charge of security and got back the same BS, 1 sentence response about how they'll patrol the lots more.... :(

My bad! I had no idea, I never heard anything about it...unlike the other incidents. I only heard of people getting car broken into in the big ground level parking lots

Im sorry to hear that

I'm sure you're aware, in your infinite wisdom, ATF "gunwalking" to Mexican drug cartels, started in 2006--Operation Wide Receiver.

They don't bother sending emails about car break-ins. They will however notify you if a club on campus is selling boba, or if someone is giving away "free magic tickets".

Dont forget the most important emails: we need to be informed EVERY time someone gets their masters degree, since im sure we care:rolleyes:

and there were seven witnesses. wtf
of course, who can forget the va tech massacre. hard to beat va tech.

i go to virginia tech. i don't think any other campus in the nation has had a beheading occur at the au bon pain.

To be fair, have you seen the prices at ABP?

What is this beheading you are talking about?

This is exactly the feeling I get from western. I get the sense thatl that their student s don't really love their school. They seem gruntle about it

Some like it and some dont. I personally think its roughly split down the middle. Im sure someone on these forums will disagree with me, but our class facebook page says otherwise (where people continually complain about things)

A persons opinion of Western varies on their goals, expectations, and personal lives (ie family in LA etc)

You know, a lot of US med schools are in pretty bad neighborhoods. You just have to be smart.

Show me a medical student that loves their school and overall experience, please.

Most people I know love the idea of becoming doctors and helping patients. We hate medical school. Important distinction.

You may call me out for being a naive first year, but I love my school

Thank you for posting this. Can't remember the last time I bothered to read one of those emails...

It's true that Western can't really do anything about random gang fights five blocks from campus. Short of building a dome out of bulletproof glass around campus, that risk is just going to be be there, until Pomona develops into a nicer community (highly unlikely to happen in the forseeable future).

The school's general approach to security, however, really needs to change. The security guards are absolutely useless- they sit there and watch students go by on the main strip, but they're never even looking at the areas where students park. Cars are getting broken into (it seemed like on a weekly basis for a while there) on First street, and they just say it's Pomona PD's job because it's twenty feet off campus. The most action I've ever seen from them is when they chewed me out for parking in a visitor's spot by the bookstore. And let's not forget to consider the implications of the security guard who got MUGGED ON CAMPUS earlier this year.

Western is a good school. But it has problems with communication between the students and the administration, and that has been a definite drain on my experience here. I think the recent changes in the leadership will be helpful (Dr. Mack is wonderful), but in the meantime I'm happy to be in COMP-NW's jurisdiction now, as they seem much more open and supportive.

Since it's not real, you could've picked one of numerous beautiful places on planet Earth. Yet you settled on the butthole that is Barstow.

Strong logic bro.
