mayo and vandy both seem to have very happy, enthusiastic students. iowa and mizzou seem to have decently happy students.

UMiami seemed pretty happy and involved as well ..........
dartmouth's dvd claims that they have the happiest students. hell, i'd be happy if they accepted me, too!
Every UF med student I've talked to raves about the school. Also, HUMC

I have to say that Columbia's students seemed sooo happy there! They went out of their way to answer our questions about the school and they seemed to really enjoy the opportunities offered there. I was very impressed by the passion that students had for the school, and I think that's part of the reason why Columbia is at the top of my list after visiting.

Just like cows, all happy students come from California...Ok, maybe not the best analogy, but the people at UCI and UCDavis seemed really happy...

Basically, everyone is happy (maybe with the exception of UCSD). They got in, they are happy. It is us here trying to get in that aren't that happy.

i get the feeling that wherever we are, we'll be happy. at schools i've visited, i've made it a point to ask if there are unhappy students. and, the honest folks say there are, and the reasons are generally because that person did not want to be in medicine in the first place and/or is just in the wrong city (far from significant other, family, etc.) but i haven't heard of the school specifically causing unhappiness. maybe we should post this in the allo thread.

Hi, as a second year at UCSD, I know for sure that my classmates have turned down UCSF, UCLA, UMich, Hopkins, and Duke, just to name a few. There are many reaons why students here are happy or not. No matter where you attend, the bottom line is to learn as much as you can and be as great a physician you can be. The trick is to find and get into a school that fits for you.

Exactly. Interviews are a show to try to convince the future acceptees that the students are happy there. You meet self or school selected students who are chipper cheerleaders and they want you to think their school is happy happy fun land. In general, you'll meet alot of first years at most places, because they're the least busy and least stressed. My general rule knowing what I know now is not to go by anything the first years say... If you don't remember meeting anyone above first year, there's probably a reason.

At UMiami, we only had 2 first years and rest were 2nd years and 4th years.. met a few 3rd years in the hospital .. first years were in class and 2nd year were practicing clinical stuff on each other and seniors......at least I was impressed 🙂
Student satisfaction is one of the biggest reasons I chose the University of South Florida. I know students and residents at USF other than the students on the interview, and all of them love the school and the affiliated hospitals. They're given clinical opportunities starting in the first semester, which is very cool and lets them remember what they're working toward; it isn't just dry science classes. We asked a fourth-year on our interview what she would change about the school, and she said that once she and her classmates complained about something in the curriculum or the procedure of the school, it was changed by the next term, so she didn't have anything left to change. I can't wait to be one of those happy students next year. 😀
I got a very good vibe from Tulane students. The admissions office told interviewees to ask students in the hallways any questions they might have. I never ONCE had to stop a student. They saw my interview attire and stopped me to talk to me. They genuinely seemed happy to be there, into what they were doing, and eager to get dynamic people to join them. And it was definitely not a show put on by the admissions committee because I met several students not working with the committee.

I'd say one universal that you could look for that seems to make for happy med students is block testing. Sure it sucks to have tests for three straight days but the 4-6 weeks between tests can be very relaxing. I know friends at other schools that have tests randomly whenever and they seem to always be stressed and never feel like they are "done"... Block testing allows you to feel done and put down the books for awhile and get back to normal. Go out of town for a few weekends and not even think about packing a bookbag. Just something to consider!
Vanderbilt says they have the "highest student satisfaction" in the country... whatever that means.
But I sort of feel like, on the whole, medical schools have personalities just like people and that med students are selected in the hopes that our personalities match the personality/vision/feel of the school (with the MCAT, GPA, EC etc being a given). So you sort of end up at the place where you could be happy and that would probably be not as thrilled at the schools that rejected you anyway.
Then again, that might all be crap. Or sour grapes. Or the fact that I am on 2 hours sleep. Whatever.
I just know that when I interview there were places I disliked regardless of rankings or of the happiness of other students. (And places I was very surprised to like a lot).

I stayed with a first year Vandy med student...and they are by far the happiest student body I've met...
I think the feeling there is: "we're all in Nashville together and lets make the most of it." They do a lot together as a class and that kind of class cohesion is something I haven't really seen anywhere else.
But I agree that you should find a school that suits YOU best...and thats where you will be happiest.

Although I went to an open house like 2 years ago, Cornell students seemed extremely happy, and really friendly. I'm sure not much has changed, though.
I agree that a lot of the med students you see will be stepford wives in pleasantville. From what I've seen at Hopkins, most of the first years seem to be happy because there's a lot of free time. Almost none of the second years seem happy. A lot of students say that second year is brutal and I've met very few happy second years. Third and fourth years are mixed. Most students don't like living in Baltimore. I really like Baltimore though.
I think every class is going to have their share of super competitive students and narcissistic personalities. The ratio seems to be higher with Mud Phuds though.
I'd be happy almost anywhere.

I've heard quite a few rumors about ucsd. I know two current students there who really hate it. Supposedly, they are trying to raise board scores and fail more students, but they embarrass everyone who fails in front of some "why did you fail" panel? Anyone heard anything about this?
I'm a medical student who has a number of friends in other top medical schools and I can honestly say that Baylor has some of the happiest medical students around. Really diverse student body, students aren't ultra-competitive, lots of people who like to work hard and play harder. We start clinics in January of our 2nd year and have about 10 months we can take off between then and graduation. Very useful for Step I studying, interviewing, travelling, etc. They don't work us hard but we get a damn good education. Only thing that sucks is the humidity and parking. Look into us.
I'll throw my two cents in and say my friends at Rochester and Jefferson both talk about a happy student body. Cooperative, athletic, social, happy.
But is there a way to find out which school has the most drop outs? I think that that'd be a pretty good indicator. Anyone have any ideas on where one could find this stat?

PS: I have friends at alot of the schools mentioned in this thread, and I can tell you that most of them are pretty unhappy with things at their schools.
When I interviewed at Penn State a few weeks ago, students were literally stopping us in the hallways to answer questions, and they seemed really happy with the place. And since my interview group spoke to like 15 people (almost all 1st years), I think that was a pretty good indication that the students like it there 🙂

all this talk about happy medical students is pretty funny from my perspective. it's like sheep headed for slaughter. i think if you ask your questions carefully you will find one of three things about so-called "happy" medical students:
1. by "happy" they mean "not yet utterly depressed beyond hope, still hanging on and thankful for it not being any worse"
2. they are doped up on drugs above prescribed levels
3. they are utter tools that most people want to stab in the face
medical school sucks ass. happiness and medical school is mutually exclusive. the best you can hope for are states of intermittent not-sadness. so the next time a bunch of people seem "really happy to be there!" to you, keep those 3 categories in mind.

The BIGGEST myth in the world is that the UC's have a lot of hotties. No they facking dont! Even SB is lacking. For every decent girl at a UC, there are 10 ugly ones - and that's generous. When I did research at Penn State for a summer, I was amazed at how many hotties there were there compared to every UC. The percentage of hotties at a UC is about the same as my old undergrad, and I went to an uppety liberal arts college full of grimey pasty-white birkenstock wearers! Yeah there are some ugly ones too ucla especially south campus (sci majors), but those aren't the ones I'm checking out. I don't pay attention to them, I'm talking about the hotties who are non-science majors. Those girls go to school in full club make up and get all dolled up. And during the summer being in so cal the skirts get shorter and the tank tops get smaller. Have you ever checked out bruin walk on a warm summer day.
