harvard acceptances?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I had the most glorious dream last night. The mail came and the postman had to hand deliver this gigantic yellow package to me since it was much too big for the mailbox. It was a Harvard acceptance and I went to sleep with it. When I woke up, the envelope was gone, and I threw all my sheets and my comforter off the bed and went through my room in confusion looking for my nonexistent big yellow package.

I've had this dream two nights in a row now. Reality is so hard to accept!!! 😛

And yes, parents are indeed funny. My mother also disregards all of my other acceptances since Harvard's her top choice. I know she only wants the best for me.

Haha. That was me all over for undergrad. Parents, honestly, please, I'm white, middle-class, and while I made good grades, I didn't start my own business or anything. No scholarships will be had. They were so surprised when I was right...
Hey I sent you a PM some time ago. I'm really interested in hearing about your experience in border health if you don't mind talking a bit about it 🙂

has anyone else noticed that HMS alums are rare on the interview trail?

i've been interviewed mostly by either p&s alums or yale alums at the more selective medical schools. even at HMS, the person who introduced us to the school was a p&s alum. and at stanford, my faculty interviewer was a p&ser. at yale, it was all yalies. at umich, again with the p&s and yale. i have *yet* to be interviewed by an HMS alum (except for my HMS faculty interview).

i basically NEVER saw HMS alums, working in ANY capacity whatsoever in non-HMS admissions offices. i mean, obviously they are ALL OVER academic medicine, but they are hard to find in positions that are associated with admissions elsewhere.

is this a useless observation?

My faculty interviewer at Hopkins was an HMS alum. Sorry! LOL 😛

I do agree with you that we rarely see them involved in admissions at other med schools. One thing I do observe is that most HMS alums end up practicing in HMS hospitals. So maybe very few end up elsewhere.

My NYU interviewer was a HMS alumni.

I keep having dreams where my mailbox is starting to break from too many big/heavy envelopes. In excitement, I open up the mailbox and take out the clunky envelopes, only to see that they are credit card companies notifying me of my "pre-approved status". I hate you, mastercard. really. 👍

I heard somewhere that HMS has put out the most Deans.

I interviewed with an HMS alum at two schools.

Does anyone know, are there any HMS grads in politics?

HMS draws students that are leaders so I imagine there are some HMS grads that go into the political arena (like healthcare), but I can't seem to find any (via google, at least).

P.S. Good luck to everyone waiting :luck::luck::luck::luck::luck::luck::luck:

I can't say that I know any off the top of my head, but I remember talking about health policy with an HMS student during my interview visit. He said that he was planning to go into health policy/political health stuff and seemed very happy with Harvard's preparation for the field. I think that, of all the various MD career options, the political arena is the place where having a "big name" M.D. can make the most difference. Of course, I firmly believe that if you truly want to accomplish something, you'll make it happen no matter what medical school you're at. Good luck to you too :luck:

Haha my mom really despaired over my Columbia waitlist too! She was all giddy that I had been getting a bunch of acceptances earlier in the season, and then came all my top tier waitlists and she was just devastated. I tried to explain to her that it's very competitive, and she's just like in denial that anyone can turn me down, so in the end I have to comfort her about my waitlists haha. She's pretty much lost hope for me getting into Harvard I think - it's her dream for me to go there so I can stay close to home, so I actually feel pretty bad for her that it probably won't happen. My poor mom... I think this cycle has taken as much of a toll on her as it has on me.

Gotta love parents. I don't think many of us would be where we are now without our families. 🙂

No kidding!!! I only hope I can be even 1/10th of the type of parent my mom is. 😀

So am i the only one that when I meantion schools that I ve interviewed at there is suddenly the "oh wow" when I say harvard? And then of course I tend to get the ...I didnt know you were that smart!

haha, thanks....

of course, the other favorite is that upon interviewing I loved Cornell and HMS...and many people cant fathom taking Cornell over HMS....always makes me laugh...

here's to another week...

Bill Frist, former republican senator from Tennessee, cardiothoracic surgeon, and HMS alum:

Some may remember when he contradicted the diagnosis of Terri Schiavo's doctors based upon televised video footage. He made his fortune in a for-profit hospital chain founded by his family.

...and his son was arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence while a student at princeton

said "vehicle" was a golf cart. said "influence" was sheer stupidity.

he's a cool guy though, don't get me wrong. (really) i don't mean to be mean to anyone.

Still better than a certain Yale legacy and Harvard Business School alum 😉

agreed.

anyway, I think we can all agree that HMS alums pretty much do well for themselves...

what i want to know is if they have secret meetings where they decide the fate of the universe together.

I bet it's something like the Justice League. A coalition of superheroes UNITED AGAINST EVIL. Paul Farmer = Superman. Atul Gawande = Batman. Jerome Groopman = The Green Lantern. Michael Crichton (writer of Jurassic Park and other similar thrillers, an HMS graduate who decided not to pursue medicine) can be Aquaman, because Aquaman's powers don't really work in the same terrain as those of the other superheroes. I want to say that Harvey Cushing would be The Flash, but Cushing died quite a while ago (OR SO WE ALL THINK. Cushing, arguably the pioneer of modern neurosurgery, could absolutely establish himself as one of the pioneers of zombie neurosurgery).

So has anyone called admissions lately?? Is everything being sent out today?

So has anyone called admissions lately?? Is everything being sent out today?

I don't know if anyone has the nuggets to do that at this point. According to last year's thread, the office sent out an email saying by what date all decisions will be mailed. I don't know if they will do that this year, but it'd be a nice gesture.

Any word of the fabled HST calls? I'd expect those to be coming out soon, as well.

So has anyone called admissions lately?? Is everything being sent out today?

When I called yesterday, they said that they were expecting to send everything out by tomorrow. There's obviously a chance that they'll need to send some stuff next week, but let's hope for speedy returns (Kudos to the admissions office if they manage to do it all by the end of this week- I'd be pretty intimidated if I needed to stuff ~800 little envelopes and ~200 huge envelopes). Of course... there's always the chance that the status page will be back up on Friday... but at this point, I'm going to just wait patiently for my envelope. I'm going home for Easter this weekend and I'll enjoy the holiday a LOT more if I don't have everyone in my family feeling sorry for me.

We still have some long days ahead of us, but let's think positive guys!

Looks like another quiet day for the mail... Silence is good.

GAH I'm taking calculus 2 for hms admission, and I don't even know whether I'm taking it for nothing. Kill me now!

Verily.

Anyone want to wager whether the Fin Aid website will go up tomorrow?

I'm guessing that it won't be up until Monday at the earliest. Tuesday seems more likely. I think that'll also be the day when the first few acceptance calls will be made and when Boston will start receiving acceptance packages.

Didn't the admissions office say they would mail out all decisions by tomorrow? If so, any decisions including acceptances should reach Boston folks by Saturday and Monday at the latest right?

also:

1) do waitlist letters come in small envelopes?

2) waitlisters have access to the finaid page, right?

3) are the large yellow envelopes sent priority?

Yes, they did say that ALL decisions, including acceptances and waitlists, would be mailed by tomorrow. I'm just skeptical that this is actually going to happen because last year, rejections came first and nobody seems to have received a post-interview rejection yet. They might be doing things differently this year. There's no reason not to believe that acceptances will start arriving on Saturday. If they do, then I'm betting that you'll get the first acceptance :luck:.

judging from last year's threads:
1) yep, small envelopes with an extra sheet of paper and an envelope to reply.

2) no, waitlisted people received the "login failed" message.

3) after much sleuthing, I found this post from 2004. If Harvard is still mailing acceptances the same way that they did back then, then the envelopes will be sent via regular first-class mail. Waitlists are also sent by regular first-class mail.

Wow, I have way too much free time on my hands. Also, still nothing from HMS in my mailbox 😎

Okay, not that exciting... In 2004, rejections and acceptances were sent in the same batch. Thanks for asking about the priority mail, finallygavein! We now have reason to believe the admissions office might actually send all the stuff out tomorrow!!!! Alright, Boston, time for you all to get some gigantic folder-y goodness :luck:

😱....ya think HMS intentionally releases decisions after nearly EVERY medical school has done so (at least all the ivies) ? im impatient for my rejection! ha..

you're thanking me, when you're the one who did all the research?!

i'll be sure to lob you a few more easy ones in the coming days...

i'm down south right now at my parents' place. i'm rooting for those of you in the boston area!

Actually Penn is later. They are releasing next Wednesday.

gosh i reallllllyyyyyy hope this is the last weekend till we hear. i just need closure already for better or worse. (hoping for better!😀)

Aww thanks!! For all the hard work you've put into obtaining info for us Harvard hopefuls, I definitely hope you get good news too!

Good luck everyone!!! There's not too much longer to wait! :luck::luck::luck:

How did you confirm next Wednesday? No one on the Penn thread seems to have any information.

This has definitely been discussed on the Penn thread. A Penn undergrad ran into the MSTP coordinator yesterday who told him that decisions are coming out wednesday.

SBBunny, Thanks for all the information you provide in this thread. I wish you the best luck in future days. I hope you will get the acceptance from Harvard. Maybe we will become very good friends (if I get accepted too😛)... you never know😳

Yeah. I guess I missed that. People were making wagers yesterday on when we'd hear from Penn, so I figured that meant no one actually knew.
