harvard acceptances?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
this thread makes me giddy!!! i wish i could stay at home chained to the mailbox, but my horrid senior thesis dictates otherwise...

OH GOD. I remember my thesis. I'm still suffering from Post-Thesis Stress Disorder. Whenever EndNote opens, I have flashbacks of late nights/ early mornings running Westerns and battling MS Word to insert stuff into my paper. Good luck :luck:

URM here. How's it going?

I heard it is harder for us to get in, which does not make sense to me and at this point I dont really care lol but i was wondering what you know about it. Besides being asked a lot in the interview about it

Everyone knows that bad news is much easier to take when it seems final, right? Which means the medical school application process, as opposed to the match, is fairly sadistic.

Is it just me, or does it seem EVERY topic in medicine, science, health, life, etc includes important contributions from Harvard?

For those who interviewed for HST, did your PI tell you that he got something in the email from Harvard? I remember HST students telling us that last year, there PI's got an email to that effect. My PI apparently didn't get anything. 🙁

I hadn't heard that. I certainly hope it's at least a level playing field for everyone. For whatever reason, my URM status was not a major topic of discussion in either my NP or HST interviews. Things were much more focused on ECs, research, life experiences, etc.

EDIT: It was discussed, however, at other schools, generally when I was interviewed by a physician who was also a URM.

Eek I'm afraid to ask my PI about it... he definitely hasn't mentioned anything to me.

Has anyone read "Stumbling on Happiness" by Gilbert? It is really good!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Harvard is smart to not influence its decision by stuff like that, I hope its level for everyone too so whoever gets there is because he/she deserves it. JUST FOR THE RECORD, a person I know got another pre-interview rejection today (west coast).

Forget this thread, I'm about to explode from anticipation.

Nothing in the mail yesterday. Dunno about tody, but should find out soon. Argh....

when we get our first POST-interview rejection, this thread will REALLY explode.

i hope that if i get rejected post-interview i can AT LEAST be the first person to report it on here. that would be a cool claim to fame.

West Coast? Well, things have been moving along for a while. The longer we go without any news, the better, since tradition stipulates that acceptances go out last. First I wanted time to fly until I get the decision, now not so much, lol.

I live in Boston and just got the mail....nothing today...

Ugh, the terrible waiting game. Do you think it would work if medical schools used a match system?

Disagree, residents have trouble salary/work hours wise, and i dont want financial trouble lol

I wonder if AAMC finds out about our decision before we do haha. They said that other schools that have accepted us can see where else we are accepted right? So AAMC has some sort of database with all our info in it. It's entirely possible they have already been updated with the Harvard decisions...

The first notices of snail mail decisions of any kind are probably going to be from people in Cambridge/Boston. Unless they decide to do rejections by phone or email...

Rejection Phone Call:
cell phone: jingly rendition of an embarrassing pop song- 617 area code displays
Interviewee: (trembling) "H-hello??"
HMS Office: "Hello, this is the Harvard Medical School admissions office. Is this <name>?"
Interviewee: "WOW. Yeah, I'm <name>. At least... I think I am. Wow, I can't believe this is really happening."
HMS Office: "Yeah, the previous applicant said the same thing. Well, this is the real deal!"
Interviewee: "I'm... honored... Wow."
HMS Offfice: "As you should be. We had over 9000 very qualified applicants this year and we're proud to select you for our very competitive pool of rejected applicants."
Interviewee: "WHAT??"
HMS Office: "You've been rejected."
Interviewee: "But... calling me...?"
HMS Office: "Are you THAT dense? REJECTED. Not admitting you!"
Interviewee: "...."
HMS Office: (plays Nelson Muntz 'HAHA' soundbite)
Interviewee: "What... what..."
HMS Office: (breezily) "Best of luck in all your future endeavors."

UMich told us that March 15th is when all schools that accept you can see where else you've been accepted. Presumably this info is to let schools seduce you away from their competitors with scholarships and such.

is anyone else compulsively re-reading their entire AMCAS application and looking for reasons that you shouldn't get accepted?

 That poor applicant...
I've never gotten a phone call acceptance before, I'm not even sure what I would say - should I be pleasantly surprised but serious or react like those people that win the lottery jackpots? How have the rest of you responded to a phone call acceptance?

My worst phone acceptance was from Tufts. I got the call at 11 a.m. on Sunday and it had been a bad weekend and was going to get worse (breaking up with the boyfriend that day lol) so I answered the phone a bit bitchy to hear "Hi, this is the Dean of Admissions from Tufts..." I was wondering how often people get rejected post-acceptance!!

My first acceptance was a phone call. Unfortunately, I missed the call. So I got a message on my cell phone saying it was the admissions office and to please call them back. We then proceeded to play phone tag for a couple hours (that is, I called and got their answering machine a couple times before I finally relented and left a message -- kept hoping that they would actually pick up; once I left a message I kept my cell phone very close by me!). End result was that it wasn't much of a surprise once I actually got the call. I tried so hard to sound surprised too!

This thread is straight up about to explode, just like my migraine ridden brain

Wow I just saw the assistant director of admissions for Yale post in the Yale thread setting the record straight about how they sent out decisions. I wonder if anyone from Harvard admissions reads this thread and wants to give us the inside scoop 😉

Any clue as to whether or not they'll be staggering the release of their decisions again this year? I think it'd be a lot better if they just released everything at once. For some reason, hoping to avoid bad news strikes me as more stressful than hoping to receive good news. Especially on the west coast, where not receiving bad news might just be due to the longer transit time for mail...

I think it's pretty clear they're staggering decisions. Several post-secondary rejections have been received, while no post-interview rejections, waitlists, or acceptances have been received yet.

Someone may need to correct me on that, however, in case I'm wrong.

Someone from Harvard definitely keeps tabs on SDN, but I doubt they would post any info.

Nothing here in NYC (thank God). The Boston people are the ones to watch, though. Once there's news in Boston, then the rest of us can start counting down days. If pre-interview rejections have already reached the West Coast, they were probably sent out on or before Friday. MD/PhD acceptances started today. So far, we're lining up with last year's timeline pretty nicely (first rejections were received the weekend before the Tuesday of the first MD/PhD acceptances). We're in for a long haul everyone :luck:. Well, let's try to stay sane.

by your projections, when can we expect to receive the (1) first post-interview rejections and (2) acceptances on the EAST coast?

that is, of course, if we are in line with last year's sequence?

I'm guessing that the first post-interview rejections will be mailed on Friday, waitlists sent on Monday, and acceptances sent out on Tuesday (with phone calls on Wednesday). That would mean that acceptances will arrive in Boston mailboxes next Wednesday and in NYC (and other East Coast places) on Thursday. Then there's about a 20% chance that a cold front will sweep from the South to the Northeast on Wednesday night and we'll get snow flurries in Manhattan on Thursday... cause it'll be a cold day in Hell's Kitchen before I get into Harvard.

Really, though, this is ALL speculation based on the first MD/PhD acceptance and a general feeling about the postmark date of the first pre-interview rejections. The only data point that doesn't fit is the projected 3/22 financial aid website reopen date (the website currently says that it'll open by 3/22). Maybe that means that the site will reopen at the end of the workday on Friday. Last year, the financial aid website reopened on the date that they promised and all of the accepted people were able to log in. That was the same date that acceptance emails and acceptance packets started. Soooo.... there's always a chance that the whole thing will be condensed and Boston acceptances will start on Friday (that would mean an estimate of Saturday or Monday for acceptances to make their way to the rest of the East Coast).

Yeah. I feel like a meteorologist. Maybe tarot reader is a more appropriate description... Hope that helps.

(p.s. If Harvard admissions is reading this, please take my exuberance as proof of my love of your school, not an indication of my compromised mental health- Thank yooou).

SBBunny, you're absolutely wonderful for that post! *sigh* now to next week seems like an eternity...I'm going to go put on my HMS nametag...

Haha I love you guys, I'm glad we're all in this together. I got a not-so-shiny black folder. I wonder why they switched colors during the cycle.

hmm...i searched through some previous years' posts and i couldn't find anything on folder color.

i was in early nov. and our folders were shiny and red.

i think you might be on to something...they must have some sort of color coding system

...and sleep with my folder next to me

Same here. My folder doesn't leave its resting place next to my pillow. Also, just to weigh in on the folder color question, I interviewed in early November and I have a shiny, red folder (it is a cross between fire engine red and candy apple red) with lovely embossed gold lettering and the HMS crest upon which I've written "I <3 HMS" and "PLEASE ACCEPT ME" in tiny letters.

...honestly, I'm kind of looking forward to life without all the ridiculous good-luck rituals.

Shiny red folder = accepted
Black folder = reject/waitlist
