harvard acceptances?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If everything was indeed sent today, I think most Northeasters can expect to hear by Saturday!!!. Good luck all!

Do you think if everything was sent today, Boston people would receive the mail tomorrow? It would be great to hear their happy scream😀

I don't know about y'all, but if I don't make it to HMS for medical school, then I am going to shoot to get there for residency. After the interview, I realized that Harvard students are like any students - you only get there by working hard and believing in yourself. Now that I know it IS possible to get there, I'd like to be there at some point during my career.

Just thought I'd get these thoughts out before decisions arrive. Good luck to y'all!:luck:

But what if when you go through medical school, you discover that you are really interested in something that Harvard doesn't have the best residency in? For example, in ENT, Harvard is certainly not considered top tier.

Edit: I just thought of Massachusetts Ear and Eye Infirmary (supposed to be great at ENT) is affiliated with HMS. So I guess at the moment I can't think of any residencies that suck at HMS.

I respect that.

Good luck to all in the coming days. The long wait is about to be over! For those accepted, please make the most of it. You're in a position to make a great contribution to the world. :luck:

Yeah, you have a point. I'm pretty sure I'd like to go into pediatrics... so Children's Hospital Boston would be awesome. Then I'd like to do a fellowship in, perhaps, cardiology. Who knows, though, what we'll decide in a few years?

But I'm looking way ahead...I just posted that to give a bit of encouragement that all of this will continue...we can still shoot for our dreams and nothing will end with the decision we're about to get. Medical school is just a stepping stone in becoming the best doctors we can become. And that dream - becoming the best doctor we can in order to serve others - can be accomplished at any medical school. We make our own person, we create our own achievements. This can be done no matter where we come from. So, no, it won't all end with what we find out in a few days... there will be other opportunities to reach Harvard if that is one's personal goal...and, as you stated, spanamit, if it is in the best interest of our career choice (as well as family, location, etc.).

Agreed. "With great power comes great responsibility." (seriously)

I can understand now why the process is so rigorous. The HMS admissions committee is essentially granting powerful social megaphones to around 200 students so that they make some sort of difference in the world.

In conclusion, I feel lucky to have gotten the opportunity to interview at ANY medical school, let alone Harvard...honestly, we can make a difference wherever we end up.

A tad bit too dramatic, no?

And not just too dramatic; doesn't it ignore the trend of attenuating respect for doctors in this country? I'm not going to deny doctors have "great power" in some respects, but for some reason having the responsibility to make life-or-death decisions in a hospital doesn't equate to "great power" in society.

Well, in some towns it still does, but doctors aren't the social figureheads they used to be.

Well I hope they sent out the mail yesterday. I'm almost tempted to walk over to the admissions office, since it's right next door. Maybe I'd see a big stack of letters.

In any case, I should get my mail before anyone else here, so I'll post when I get my big fat rejection. One of my interviewers despised the fact that I went to any Ivy (hello...you're at Harvard!), and I couldn't convince him that I really do like state schools. Ah well.

Good luck to everyone here! 🙂

I received an email 10 minutes ago from the Harvard Office of Recruitment and Multicultural Affairs congratulating me on my acceptance and inviting me to the Alliance minority re-visit weekend. So the word is coming. Good luck everyone! :luck:

I wouldn't go that far. Plenty of doctors use their MD's in creative ways. At a teaching conference last year, I met this woman, Joy Dryfoos, who works with several doctors who have used their influence to sway new york school officials to do really important (but risky) things with their budgets. I have many, many more examples, but I don't want to be "too dramatic". 😀

The problem is that a lot of people who end up at "top" medical schools have a very limited concept of what you can do with medical training. Not all doctors work in hospitals.

Just because you think an interview went poorly doesn't mean that your application is sunk. LOTS of people end up accepted at schools where they had terrible interviews. Good luck to you too, letitgo! Thanks for keeping us all posted :luck:. I completely understand the temptation to visit the HMS admissions office. I stealthily checked up on the Columbia admissions office when I was waiting for a decision from them (of course, I was far too afraid to actually go into the office to ask). I *DID* see envelopes being mailed... although I think that I saw mail for the entire building, not just med school decisions).

(also, I'm glad that some people have found my neurotic semi-informed status updates helpful, but it really wasn't any trouble at all 🙂)

AKgrown, you have the sickest list of acceptances I have ever seen. congrats on the success.

WHOA! Congratulations AlaskaGrown, LovelyMD, RandomBlackManX, and everyone!!!!!!!

Does the office of multicultural affairs only send e-mails to URMs because if all minority students were supposed to get an e-mail, looks like I ain't got no luck.

doesn't it seem kind of unfair to let URMs know first? whats the reasoning here?

was wondering the same thing... have any non-URM minorities out there received email?

I completely agree with you that there are many doctors, especially in community and international health, who have enormous social impact. To play devil's advocate, I would say that those impacts aren't really a function of HMS's seal of approval, and furthermore that most HMS students don't go on to have that degree of social impact. But, I think that it is a shame, and that doctors should take a more active role.

So, I guess it is just the URM office so far?

I did the same thing! I didn't know how to be smooth about it though, so I just kind of hurried past and tried to see as much as I could in one glimpse.

Yes, they were helpful! Thanks! Good luck to you :luck::luck::luck:

Seems like the people who received the email this morning are all URMs, so there's no reason to worry if you're another minority group and you didn't receive that email. Also, all of the people who received that email have been KICKING SERIOUS BUTT in admissions this year, so that might be a special recruitment email for the super top-tier candidates who also happen to be URMs.

Here's hoping that the day won't be too stressful for everyone still waiting :scared:

I got the Office of Recruitment and Multicultural Affairs email as well. I called admissions to confirm and they said they couldn't do confirmation over the phone, but the admissions office should be sending out their own emails later today. I applied HST/NP, but I still don't know which came through, or if both did.

I hope I'm not hallucinating all of this.

Congrats admits!!! Best wishes to everyone else still waiting!!!

:luck:🙂:luck:

Well, that certainly raises questions about cause and effect...

But, yeah, I agree. It's surely a recruitment tactic. Nothing to worry about.

PS Congrats!!

Got a call and email! Good luck everyone!

They said that NP and HST will be sending out acceptance emails later today? Is that just for URMs?

And congrats!

If you got the e-mail, then I think you'll be getting a call but they just haven't gotten to you yet.

They didn't specify whether it would be HST, NP, or both. I hope they send it for everyone admitted!

RandomBlackManX, whom did you receive a call from?

If you got the e-mail, then I think you'll be getting a call but they just haven't gotten to you yet.

Oh, ok.

Did all of you receive emails on the hour or close to it?

*Silently screaming* This will be a long day.

I think the reason why they're letting us know quickly is because they have a a revisit for URMs, and I think the office of diversity is covering the transportation costs for that one. They probably want people to be aware of it quickly so that they can book travel ASAP. That's my guess anyway.

Just wondering if this is a new thing -- does anyone know if HMS sent standard confirmatory acceptance emails in the past? (Not just for URMs, but for everyone accepted?) I know there were phone calls to some admittees. Emails?

Congrats to everyone admitted!!!

How are your online financial aid apps coming so far? 😀😀😀

NOOOO! You have to keep your cool. I'm looking to you for some sanity...

Are we sure that ALL applicants will be getting emails?

Let's not assume that we'll get emails... this definitely didn't happen in last year's thread. Plus, if we're wrong and they don't send emails, we'll all get so down thinking that we didn't get accepted.

oh jesus christ.

i dreamed about harvard last night. haha. lame.

:scared: omg omg omg...I've got a full day at work today...*sigh*...I'll just carry my laptop around with me all day to check my email 🙂

A huge CONGRATS to all of you who've been accepted...I am so happy for you!!! What a great way to end the week! For the rest of us...:luck::luck::luck:

Is there a URM re-visit in addition to the second look weekend? And will transportation costs be covered for that one as well?

ok so i'm officially going batsh*t -- who was it that said admissions would be sending out their own emails later today? can you please clarify this? is it just to accepted URMs or to accepted people overall? since i didnt think hms ever sent out emails for acceptances...gaaaaaah

Yeah, it's like, god I wish I could get a confirmation on this. But I do not have the balls to call and ask about it. We'll find out soon enough from the faithful SDNers who will post if they get emails....

so is HMS admissions really sending out e-mails and if so, just for URMS or for all accepts? Dang, here's to a day of complete solitude sticking by my comp.
