Hello guys I'm new to this forum, wish I had found it a couple of years ago. I'm having trouble picking some classes for this upcoming semester. My financial aid is really low after transferring to another college, so I must choose my class wisely. The classes I'm trying to choose between are human physiology or genetics. Both of those class require I must take bio 1 and 2 and chem 1 and chem 2. However, Human Physiology also require that I take biochem and molecular biology. The only course I took so far is bio 1 and 2 with labs and chem 1 with lab. I made an A in all of those classes.
I wanted to ask you guys on your opinions on which class is the easier one to take first. I'm also enrolling in calculus1 and microbiology. Is there going to be a lot of chemistry stuff in human physiology and genetics because I'm not that good in chemistry.
I also have one more question please. Right now my major is biology but it will probably around another 2 years before I finish with that. I know that you can pick any major you want to and take pre den classes to get in, but which major gets accept the easiest. I have done research and some reading, and it says that dental schools are beginning to pick students in other fields just not science. However, I think the pool from which they pick those students is very little and a slim chance to get in.

I'd take genetics, just my opinion.

If it's just physiology, I'd say take Genetics. If it's anatomy and physiology, skip genetics.

The bio degree is fine, as it prepares you for all the science you'll be taking in D-school, but it won't really make you stand out at all. I have a Zoology degree, but there are people in my class who are art majors, foreign language majors, even journalism. As long as you do well in those science pre-reqs you're fine. ~makes you look more well-rounded if you've expanded your studies beyond generals and science.

my $0.02.

There's really no chemistry involved in either genetics or physiology. I personally thought that genetics was a little easier than physiology, but both classes are highly recommended by most dental schools.

Majoring in something other than science will definitely not hurt you, as long as you do well in the science classes. I think it will make you stand out a little bit more when you apply and make you look a little more interesting. Of course the only drawback is time and whether you can fit in all the prereqs and still graduate on time, if that is a consideration for you.

It all depends on the prof.
Each school may have one class harder than the other. The material doesn't matter unless for the DAT. The difficulty depends on how many A's are given out.

good luck

You need to take Bio 1/2 and Chem 1/2 anyway. Start out with those for now. I'd suggest genetics after Bio 1/2 and then molecular bio.

I would say genetics, its easier, and more interesting! For me anyways.

I hated genetics, I also hated physiology, but I would recommend physio just based on the fact that many current dental students recommend you getting some exposure to it during undergrad if you have the opportunity to do so. I'm sure that if (when) you get to first year in dental school and they are going over the systems that you'll be glad that you've seen it before.

Ok I just re-read it and you're going to be taking both anyways, so ask around and see which prof is harder and then take the easier one first. At my school physio was easier than genetics, I just didn't find it interesting.
