Hey all: 🙁

I just got back my MCAT score. It was 24Q. I expected to do better. my GPA is 3.9, tons of extracurriculars. I already sent in my secondaries to NSU and LECOM-B, and my professors are sending the letters next week. I applied to DO schools even before taking the MCAT, because I like their philosophy and i want to do primary care.I have shadowed 2 DO Physicians.

My question is: Do I stand a chance?

Don't sweat it. 🙂 The overall average MCAT for DO schools is about 25. With your GPA, that should more than make up for 1 pt. off the average. If your ECs are as good as you say they are, everything should work out. Keep your head up. :luck:

Actually only a year or so ago, they were all 24 except one.
Your GPA would more than make up for a 22.

Stop crying. You'll be fine. I wish I had your GPA. High GPA low MCAT people tend to have better luck than low GPA high MCAT people like me. I know it's frustrating to be in this situation though. Good luck! (I don't think you will need luck.) 😉

Thank you all. I guess I freaked out on the test day. That's what happened to me the first time i took the SAT. Then the second time i had increased 100 points in one and 40 points in the other section. At least i'm happy about the Q in the writing sample.

Look forward to seeing you here in Bradenton- The weather is good and the professors are really great for the most part. Know about PBL approach to learning and OMM before you come. With those scores I am sure you should pack your sunscreen and wait for your invite.

See you soon.

ps: if you do come here to study: be prepared to work really hard. I thought getting into a school was tough. This is ridiculous. If you aren't sure you want to be a doctor, run, run for your lives! This sucks. I have no life. Help!!!

But like I said, the weather is nice, and PBL rocks. You couldn't PAY ME to go to a school with Lecture based curriculum.

I don't know what you're crying about! You should be fine. Get ready for medical school comes August of 2006 :luck: .

My MCAT is a 24Q and I've already had one acceptance and another interview Monday. My GPA is only 3.4 and ~3.6(BCPM)...actually it's like 3.54 for aacomas science. So dry your tears!!! With all your EC's and DO shadowing YOU'LL BE FINE!!!

Good Times! Just wait... it gets worst!!

it's too early to freak out. no worries, I had 5 interviews and 3 acceptances w/ a 24Q last year

gl, I'm sure you'll be fine, just keep those EC's coming!

I wouldn't worry about the score. Your score will get you an interview--after that, it is all dependant upon you. I just got finished having a conversation this afternoon with one of the physicians who interviews prospective students. This person was telling me how the student who looked best on paper was well--not so impressive and how the least impressive on paper was the most imressive.

You'll have the opportunity--make the best of it. 🙂

So the avg mcat for DO schools nation wide is 22?

I know the cali DO schools have pretty high mcat avgs. Western has 27 avg and i think Touro may have avgs a bit higher than western.

Thank you all for your great advice 🙂 GOd bless

Please tell me you are being serious and this isn't a joke. I was accepted to AZCOM and KCOM with a 24, and my GPA was WAY lower.

My MCAT had to go way up before I was accepted to OSU-COM and DMU-COM, though.

no, the nationwide average is probably closer to 24.

This is the average for people who took the MCAT, not the average of those accepted.

I suppose if you only count private DO schools, then the average of 24 would work.

But why do that?

A couple reasons

1) They're statistical outliers

2) Because state schools are really only reachable to those from the state or those who have super numbers anyways.

1) How can higher scores at ALL state schools make them outliers? You'll need to research that definition again. Outliers are random. This seems like a clear cut delineation between state and public schools.

2.) This is just not true. I can use myself as an example.

Outlier - A value far from most others in a set of data

An outlier does not have to be random. The state schools are in no way representative of most DO schools, since most are private. Thus they are excluded. If you were trying to figure the average MCAT for MD schools, would it be wise to include Harvard, Columbia, and Stanford? Their average MCAT scores are so much higher than the typical allopathic schools that their inclusion would shift the average and create unrepresentative data.

Although after looking at their MCAT scores again, they're not that different from the private schools.

OSUCOM 26
Ohio NA
MSUCOM 25
NJ 26

Take a look at the list of MCAT averages for public schools. You will find that the difference is only by a couple of points, and thus is not statistically significant.

By definition, an outlier must be statistically significant.

I just looked. I could have sworn they were the same as allo schools.

I had a friend that had a 3.5 graduate GPA and 3.3 undergrad GPA with a 21 2nd MCAT, and 19 on 3rd MCAT and got into Western...so don't give up hope! 🙂

Wow! Congrats to your friend bio-chik...that is awesome! I am glad that he/she got into Western...but those stats are pretty low. I mean I have a 3.2/3.1 undergrad and I am currently working on my masters...hopefully I will have a 3.5+ in the program...but a 21 and 19? Wow...I have taken it once and I got a 25...I hope to retake in April 2006 for a much better score...
Did your friend just have rediculous EC's and LOR's? Did he/she get in anywhere else?

This gives me a LOT of hope that I will get in somewhere after I apply next year....anyone else know of stories like this?
My 3.2/3.1 with a 25 doesn't seem too far off now....I hope I can offset it with a good grad GPA...and a better MCAT.

On the western site it says the avgs are 3.5 gpa and 27 mcat.

http://www.westernu.edu/admissions/do_profile.xml

Do you think thats this is true? I ve heard from someone that this isn't probably totally accurate, the actual numbers are probably lower.

they release their data to usnews in a standardized format, so i have no reason to doubt it.
