HELP!!! MP in one class - does this ruin everything???

So i'm a second year med student. So far I've passed all my basic science classes, HP and H in one or two clinical related basic science classes like physical diganosis and clincial medicine, but path, pharm, biochem, anatomy, have all just been passes.

We just had a 1 block course, where one exam determined our entire grade. i ended up making an MP in that exam. 🙁 I wasn't expecting that grade at all (I really thought i did well) - which makes it worse. Anyways, what's done is done. I have to remediate the exam in june.

i also take the step in june. basically, i was wondering... honestly, how badly does this MP screw me for the future and residency? i don't know what field i want to go into yet, but I'm really upset with myself because now an MP will be forever stuck on my transcript and I'm really really scared that I messed everything up for my future. what if i decide to go into something competitive? Is all lost?

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

MP = marginal performance. The grade scale is Honors (H), High Pass (HP), Pass (P), Marginal Performance (MP), Fail (F).

Since it was just a one block class, I don't think this will be a nail in the coffin type of deal. You clearly have an effective method for studying the material, as noted by you grades up until this point. I wouldn't let this one test/block rattle you too much (easier said than done right?) and pick yourself up for the next block. From what I have gathered, one little blip from your preclinical years isn't going to have much of an effect on your future residency potentials. Unless it was a derm block and you want to go derm.....

My biggest fear for you would be that worrying about this make-up will distract you from studying for step 1, which is clearly much more important. Chin-up, its gonna be alright 👍

Well, your career in derm is over but other than that, move on and don't MP anything else.

Reminds me of those neurotic pre-allo threads 'OMG got a W am I doomed to doing med school in Afghanistan' threads, complete with excess emoticons and unnecessary punctuation. Honestly I'm a little disappointed this is coming from an M2.

OP there are undoubtedly people on this board who just had to scramble into a residency not of their chosen specialty, sight unseen, so if nothing else take this opportunity to develop a little perspective. Many if not most of us will have a hiccup or two during this process, and if this is yours count yourself lucky and move on.

I actually think she might have been kind of serious-- derm is uber competitive. I think you have to sell your soul along with your first-born child, save a small African village from an epidemic by diagnosing and coming up with a cure from a previously unknown infection, and have a perfect academic record from kindergarten through fourth year in med school in order to secure a top spot in derm.

I'm sorta in the same boat but somehow, unfortunately, I didn't pass 2 of my exams (I'm a second-year right now), which may be more of a red flag than one non-pass. I'm wondering how this will affect my chances for residency and what I can make sure to do from this point forward (since there's nothing I can do about the past) so that I don't hurt my chances anymore, help!

I dont understand why these schools dont just do ABCDF...

This way they can tell all those applicants that we use a pass/fail system and not grades! 🙄

I was thinking this too. Im still not sure if this thread is a joke or not. Either way, I would give the same feedback: Your life is over. You may as well just slit your wrists and jump off the empire st. building into a street full of traffic. Forget ever becoming a doctor, or any sort of profession if you want. Youll be lucky if you get a janitorial position in a hospital.

I wouldn't worry about the MP. I would worry about the heart attack and/or psychotic break you'll likely have before graduation. Relax.

Does AOA involve your pre-clinical grades? I thought that mattered for super competitive specialties? Correct me if I'm wrong, I can't find much info on AOA.

Each chapter has its own criteria, but yeah in general pre-clinical grades are one of several factors. AOA is not a make-or-break for anything, probably the specialty that pays most attention to it is ENT.

problem is for derm is you will have people with high step 1, great recs AND great grades. I don't want to do derm, but it's what I gather from people who do.

to answer your question specifically I don't think all is lost. I too have had a not so great exam here and there (and was quite surprised to find out that I was one of the top two students in the class). You would think that not your best grade would bring you down so much, but honestly we are all human and everyone goes through a rough patch or just has an off day (change a lot of right answers, etc) so overall I don't think it will hurt you as much as you think. Just move on and try as hard as possible on whatever you have left.
