Just signing up for fall claases and....
The schools I've looked at only want biochem I. So,

Biochem 2: to take or not to take? I'd rather not because I have a lot of advanced bio classes I still have to take, like animal phys, behavior, nutrition, immunology....etc etc....
Biochem 1 lab: take or not?

I'm taking biochem without lab now cause well I thought it's better to take them separately lol.

No and No! :scared:

Lol, can you tell I don't like biochem? But seriously, I don't think you need either for most if not all schools so why suffer when you could put your energy towards the important bio classes?

If you are good at biochem and like it, go for biochem 2. It will only make you look better to adcoms if you do well in a number of upper level sciences. On the other hand, if you despise biochem, no reason to torture yourself. As far as biochem lab, I would recommend looking up vet school reqs, as some may require a lab component with biochem (don't worry, the lab's the easy part!)

Biochem lab is definitely better than biochem 2 🙂

I think the pre-reqs for some schools are a biochem course with lab, not necessarily biochem 2. The latter (at least at my school) is a class that seems more geared to biochem and molecular bio-type students. My boyfriend tells me there is a massive MASSIVE amount of memorization far beyond biochem I...even for him, and he generally never has trouble with science classes/complains about them.

But of course if it's something you like and are good at, no reason not to go for it.

Some schools(cornell comes to mind) will require both biochem 1 and biochem 2 if you college offers it as a 2 course series. Which kind of sounds like it might be the case for you, so I would look into the school you want to apply to.

I'm not good 🙂 I'll see what I get in it this semester. I'm going to take the lab for sure then. I've heard horror stories about it but eh biochem lab without class should not be bad 🙂.

I don't like it 🙂. I mean it's interesting, like half the time. I like the bio part, not the chem part ... lol

Lab is better really? Well I will definitely take it then, haha 🙂.

Oh another question...will vet schools have a problem with me taking biochem from biology department? There is only ONE biochem class offered every semester, but you can sign up for it from bio department, chem undergrad, or chem grad. It gives me a bio credit so that's why I took it from bio department.

Not applying to cornell or purdue 🙂. I nearly feinted when I saw the 2 semester biochem requirement 🙂. I can take it but if there are people here who took just one and got in no problem, it'd be nice to know 🙂

Didn't you answer your own question? Why take something you don't like, that isn't required, if you could take advance courses in a subject you actually like? You'll probably end up doing better in them anyway 👍

Well everyone keeps saying that it's better to take it even if not required. A lot of my pre-med friends don't have to take biochem 1 even but they still do because it looks good apparently.

But thanks for letting me know! 😀 I will definitely enjoy all my animal classes, histology, immunology, etc more😀

I really disliked Biochem I but actually enjoyed Biochem II. I know it was the material and not the professor because I had the same guy for both. It's really not quite as bad as the first one, at least I didn't think so. Still, if you think you'll take it and fail or take it and hate it, then don't. Take something more interesting to you.

I'm pretty sure (but not 100% so if someone wants to confirm this...) that schools prefer the biology dept biochem course, not the chem department one. Mine was bio department... and I vaguely remember looking into the biochem class at my undergrad school and ruling it out because it was offered through the chem department. But I may be wrong....

Biochem lab has techniques that are used in virtually every biology research lab now, which is useful. Summer research experiences are fun and worthwhile in vet school. Knowing these techniques will make it easier.

Aside from that, if your schools don't require it, don't punish yourself. Take classes you are interested in that you will excel at. Schools are getting very numerically-oriented, and it's not worth taking a risk on a class you don't want to take anyway.

Check the prereqs carefully. Some specifically state that one semester of a 2-semester biochem sequence is not enough.

Really? How can 2 be better than 1? I think 1 in anything is always easier? 😀

Sounds good! I will look into it but it makes me feel better already. 🙂

Oh I hope not :S. I've just seen "3 credits" at those schools. I doubt one semester biochem is 3 credits? Can biochem be completed in one semester? It's an insane amount of info😱

That's what someone told me. They said it's close to research experience, which I am unsure about but hey if it helps, I'll take it😀.
What do you mean "numerically oriented"? 🙄

I don't want to make another thread so hopefully someone will look at this post 😀.

I took gen chem 1 at a community college and gen chem 2 at a uni. Does anyone think I will have to retake gen chem 1 at my uni?
