Sorry for the format. First time poster on SDN

I could use some assistance figuring out which schools I should apply to in June. I'm unsure of which resources to find this out and have just been looking at the MSAR for guidance. I have some money saved up, so I am looking at applying to around 40 schools to help my chances.

My current stats include:

ORM - Jewish White Male

Colorado Resident: Main Family ties in California and Florida

Father went to medical school at CU Anschutz.
Mother/Aunt/Grandfather went to Drexel for Medical School

Undergrad: University Of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder)

GPA: 4.0 (This and next semester left so it could change)

MCAT: 514(130/123/132/129) Yes, I know my CARS is low....

Extracurriculars:

Research: ~364 hours
- However, it's in an evolutionary Biology Lab. Not related to medicine.
- We are working on trying to publish a paper on it now where I will be 2nd Author
- I hope to be making a poster on my project for a symposium in April.

Clubs: Officer in 2 Clubs
- Physician Liason for the American Medical Student Association (AMSA)
--- ~110 hours so far.
- Co-President for a club I helped create that is associated with a local non- profit related to global health.
--- I need to calculate hours still but the club was created in December of 2017

Shadowing: 50+ hours
- 8 different physician. Mainly in Surgery.

TA: 3 classes so far
- Human Anatomy Lab - 2 semesters
- Immunology - 1 semester
- Human Physiology 2 - Next semester.

2 Medical Missions
- 1 with the International Children's Heart Foundation.
--- 2-week long trip ~ 144 hours.
--- Not sure if the hours I spent in OR here count as shadowing
--------- Not included in hours above but if so ~ 20 more hours
- 1 with the club that I helped create above.
--- Only 4 Days. ~36 hours.

Other Volunteering: ~300 hours
- Emergency Department Volunteer
--- 2 different Hospitals
--------- 160 at one hospital ~40 at my current hospital.
- I help dissect human cadavers
--- ~100 hours

Other Clinical: lacking
- I am working for an Orthopedic Surgeon this upcoming Summer
--- Not sure If this is applicable since I will only have worked there for half a month by the time I apply and not at all for Texas Schools.

Awards/Honors
- Deans List: 2016-Present
- Phi Beta Kappa: April 2018-Present
- BSI: Biological Science initiative: October 2016 - May 2017
--- It's like a grant for research.

My current School List is 55 long and I need to narrow it down to a max of 40. I am not really sure how to choose schools. I don't know if there are other schools I should consider that are off this list as well. NOTE: This is in no specific order.

Everything in tiny is out, imo. Either they are too low stats for your stats or too Catholic or too IS bias or too URM bias

Be careful about med missions ... read on here why :)

I mainly eliminated state public schools that accept few non residents with no connection to the state and some high tier schools where your MCAT may not be competitive and some low tier that may yield protect. For example, U Washington accepts less than 1% of applicants who are not from states in the Northwest and the Texas schools accept 90% of their students from Texas.

I'm Curious as to why you got rid of the Florida schools as that is where some of my support systems is. As well as why you crossed Creighton out since I have heard that is where most of the pre-med students from my school end up. Thanks for the Advice!

Suggest retaking the MCAT or adding some DO schools to your list.

You also need to have > 150 hours of non-clinical volunteering. Medicine is a service profession.

I noticed you took out Drexel even though I have family history there. Is there a reason for that?

Your stats, your EC's, your family history, your "everything" is top school caliber

The ones I took off are NOT top schools - they are great for people like me, who are not top caliber students who do not have your pedigree (statistically and everything else).

Schools can see where you apply so you're apping (appropriately) Hopkins, UCSF and you throw in a mid-to-lower tier Creighton? or McW? or WMU? There is NOTHING wrong with those schools but the likelihood is that you'd be wasting your money because you, my friend, are too good for them and don't fit the profile of what they're looking for as they build their particular class.

HI is almost exclusively HI or CA or AK students only
MN is heavily IS favored
FL schools are not high end (Morsani is trying to be)

Remember: real people make the decisions about who gets into their school and no one wants to be rejected, even at that level. So, if they see you're looking at a Hopkins and you get accepted they know you'd never accept a WMU...

My family is in the Mayo Foundations medical school museum. It makes no difference and I won't be applying there.

Would you not count dissecting as non-clinical? As well as I used to be foster parent for animals ~300 hours but I stopped in 2016 so IDK if I should included that

I include all volunteering including pet foster/rehab/rehome/transport; horses and dogs but they are vulnerable and it still shows, imo, a compassionate heart

Nope. Not at all.

Service need not be "unique". If you can alleviate suffering in your community through service to the poor, homeless, illiterate, fatherless, etc, you are meeting an otherwise unmet need and learning more about the lives of the people (or types of people) who will someday be your patients. Check out your local houses of worship for volunteer opportunities. The key thing is service to others less fortunate than you. And get off campus and out of your comfort zone!

Examples include: Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House, Humane Society, crisis hotlines, soup kitchen, food pantry, homeless or women’s shelter, after-school tutoring for students or coaching a sport in a poor school district, teaching ESL to adults at a community center, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, or Meals on Wheels.

The fostering animals is great, but you need to show that you want to help people as well.

Your Flattery in nice to hear but I feel as though my MCAT really holds me back with my CARS Score. I am also not that charismatic so interviews probably won't be my strong suit.... Would you say then, that it might be better to take off Hopkins so as not to intimidate other schools? As I feel like Hopkins is a far far reach and I don't really expect to get in there...

I know that there is a stigma against Medical missions but those are focused towards less fortunate people. The club that I started focuses on underprivileged pregnant Women. Although I don't know if this counts as volunteering since it's a club.

I think you have a good list by listening to Goro and possibly, me. Goro is an adcom; I'm just a long time SDN'er.

It's not that the schools intimidate each other it's the reverse. If you are applying to a lower tier school no one will think you'd take them at the lower tier over a Hopkins because no one, in their right mind, would (unless full ride were at lower tier school and no 100% interest in some specialty field that only that top tier school offers);

The only adcom I've ever found to be absolutely 100% d-baggggggery horsepoopish snobash who enjoyed intimidating others with his big fancy school aspirations is now a dean a one of your schools. EVERY other adcom has been anything BUT intimidating or intimidatable

Charismaticness holds some weight but there are plenty of non-charismatic people who get into med school

Do you think it is too late to add something before this upcoming cycle? As well as, are their other schools you would recommend adding to my list that wasn't on there in the first place.

Invest in MSAR Inline, and target schools whose median CARS scores are closest to your own.

Pay VERY careful attention to IS/OOS ratios for IIs and matriculants, and mission statements
