Hem/Onc fellowship application thread 2010-2011!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
wasn't going to post my credentials initially but i guess it does help out others somehow.

AMG/US citizen, west coast community residency program with ties to a good university. 96/99/and step 3 in mid-90s (forgot to write down my score). research is my CV weakness. submitted application on 12/15.

2 interviews so far
1 rejection
still waiting for 20+

hope that helps 🙂

good luck everyone.

Question: how important is research for heme-onc? And how much research are we talking about? like having 5 publications or 1 abstract?

I imagine it can mean one of two things:

1.They havent got a chance to review your application yet
2.They like you but prefer others before you and would only consider you as others cancel

This is pure speculation but what the heck..we're all obessing over this anyway

Could it mean the application didnt make it thru the filters. How many applications out of 400 are they gonna review, any guesses?

Is not the whole purpose of the " filters" to help narrow the numbver of applciations reviewed. to me it sounds like keeping someone's application " on hold" defeats that purpose. I guess anything is possible and I am biased because most of the places I have applied to seem to have my application " on hold".

Today is quite so far...or so it seems...

I think I haven't got any Ivs due 2 my scores 91/88. And j1 visa doesn't help. Wat do you guys think?

91/88 are good scores. J1 visa is the bigger issue here. But it's still early! not even Feb yet

Congrat yixa!!

Just got an email from uwashington that IV will be sent out starting on 1/21

Rejection from UTSW a few days ago.

Credentials: IMG with no visa issues. current community IM R2. Research with 10+ publications. Steps in high 90s.

Question about the 4th LOR. which one should I use...one from my program GI attending who I am sure will say good words about me or one from an Onc attending in a big medical center whom I worked with for only 8 half days? I planned to use the latter initially then I gave up because it took forever for him to finish the letter.. However now the letter is finally out and I already asked for an urgent LOR from my GI attending after I received that LOR email from MDACC.

Guys please advise. I appreciate your input. The concern I have is it takes so long for the onc attending to finish the letter, will it be a good one given the fact I worked with him for only 8 half days?

Skyfire, go with Onc letter. It carries more credibility, more so since its from big medical center. He might have been busy. IT doesn't mean it might not be good enough just because it took him more days to finish it. All the best.

Hi guys, I applied for hem/onc fellowship early december. Only one rejection from havard so far. Haven't heard from any other programs yet apart from a few generic replies that my application has been received. Any body with hem/onc interviews so far? Should I be getting nervous by now?

Hi Krogers, many applicants have not recieved interviews yet. I have been told over and over that it is still early. I read a post from last year's forum saying second week of February is the time to start panicking if you have not recieved interviews so that is what I am going by. no panic no panic no panic ..

then

mid-February :boom:

Does anybody know the Onc program at Baylor in Dallas? I could not find any information in terms of how many spots are open per year. No information about if there is option to combine with heme training either.

Hope we all hear more from programs in this coming week.

three coins, you're right. Feb is a good time to panic if one has not received IVs yet. As for me, I am still on the "many rejs but no IVs yet" list. I am trying not to panic, but I cannot help being worried. All this stress is accelerating atherosclerosis in my vessels. What also bothers me is that some of these places have still not DL'd my app yet. I don't know if that is good or bad.

Will MLK day prolong the agony of waiting from the weekend?

It sure will. I think we all need some other distraction to maintain our sanity. I am going to play Mario Kart with my son.🙂

Hi Guys. Just confirmed chief resident by PD last week. How do I relay this info to the programs I applied to, and how will it influence my getting IV's?

1. Email.

2. Minimally, if at all. I guess a program that is looking for people to abuse will be excited to get a former Chief but otherwise people will wonder why you didn't want to go make some cash as a hospitalist.

I read through the article three coins posted and noted that a LOR form IM PD was very high.

I didn't have one. Instead, I obtained one from my program director from the palliative med fellowship....

Do you guys think this would be the equivalent to a IM PD LOR? I really hope this is not a huge "strike" against me. The problem I had, was that my PD retired and the new one did not know me/work with me.

What do you guys think?

I have the same problem. I remember calling one of the programs (can't remember which one) and asking the program coordinator if it was ok to substitute my Chief of Hospital Medicine LOR for the PD LOR and she said it was fine. I am sure there are programs out there who would turn down my app for not having a IMPD LOR, but I don't have a choice.
My other problem is, of the 4 LORs, only one is from a hem/onc attending with whom I did a clinical study (publ is pending). Should I have gotten another heme/onc MD LOR as well?

Rejection from Dana-Farber( although I knew that already ) !👎

Strange silence, though my 3 LORs havent been uploaded yet!!!😡😕🙁
