This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Quick question - who's sending thank you emails? If so, are you sending them to all your interviewers or just the PD?

Hello how many ppl go invited from uic Chicago ?

Quick question - who's sending thank you emails? If so, are you sending them to all your interviewers or just the PD?
Sending to everyone including PD. Sometimes faculty write back with useful information (like would you want to talk with so and so or here is a link to something we talked about) but most times they ignore or say thank you and nothing else.

Hey there. New here. I wanted to check if anyone that is interviewing at UMichigan on 10/21 may want to switch dates with 10/7? Please direct message me. Thank you!

Hm interesting all the places I've interviewed at were like don't send e-mails saying "Thank You". Only if you have specific questions.

I think there is no second wave of invites this year. Only rejections since late August.

hi,

I cancelled my interview at medical college of wisconsin for this thursday, 9/19. maybe someone will be able to contact them and take my spot.

Wish you had posted it one day earlier and I would be able to attend another interview 🙁

Yea, I don’t know what’s up. Either people haven’t posted anything this entire season or it has been an insanely competitive season.

Is it safe to say that the second wave can last till end of September? I am hoping people who are planning to cancel interviews cancel little in advance, because some offers are coming at very short notice.

Please help me Rank these:
Dartmouth vs Loyola
UF (Gainesville) vs MCW

Not decided in onc, maybe heme malignancies?
Interested in PROs/supportive oncology research.

Roswell Park is an academic program at a comprehensive cancer center. Have not heard about the other ones so I would assume they are not very academic but maybe I'm wrong (I have a northeast bias, maybe someone from Texas can comment on the strength of Methodist).

Please help me Rank these:
Dartmouth vs Loyola
UF (Gainesville) vs MCW

Not decided in onc, maybe heme malignancies?
Interested in PROs/supportive oncology research.

All are quality programs. I suspect the biggest difference is location.

Gainesville is very remote; Milwaukee is a nice place to live, they have a balanced program between solids and liquids.

Dartmouth is more remote than Gainesville; Loyola offers decent training but is just outside of Chicago.

If you don't care where you live and just want good training Dartmouth is probably the best on the list, followed by MCW, then Loyola = UF

Interesting. You think MCW is better than Loyola?

Thanks for the response. You're right, the location is what I'm having difficulty with - Chicago is enticing right now. I just don't know how much it would affect my career considering I want to stay in academics.

Dartmouth is probably the best training, its the only NCI training site.
But Dartmouth is QUITE remote.

I mean, I don't think there is a bad choice in the group. How high you climb in terms of academics depends a lot on your individual drive, if you consistently publish meaningful research (and are willing to take the academic pay cut), sky is the limit. You may start on slightly lower footing if you go to Loyola, than if you go to Dartmouth; but if location is important to you, Chicago is a cool city, run with Loyola and if you fall past there on your rank list and land at MCW or Dartmouth or UF you're still getting a good program.

Has anyone interviewed at UCLA Harbor yet? Any word on how the program is changing now that City of Hope has its own fellowship program?

Also, for anyone who has interviewed at City of Hope: how many fellows are they recruiting this year?

What are chances of matching in you first top 4 choices? Any stats out there on NrMp rank based?

Hey guys, any opinions on the following rank order?
1. Moffitt
2. University of Minnesota
3. Albert Einstein/Jacobi
4. Henry Ford
5. Roger Williams, Providence
6. Medstar/Georgetown, DC
7. University of Toledo
8. Ascension providence, MI
9. Gundersen, La Crosse

I am pretty sure about 1 and 2. 3 to 9 is a blur.

Anybody has gone to Henry Ford, the are offering hotel for applicants to stay for a night? does the program cover the expenses for this?

It really depends on your interests. Jacobi isn't the main Einstein program, that would be Montefiore, so don't be afraid to rank that lower.

Medstar/Georgetown is Georgetown University Hospital or Washington Hospital? If it's GUH you need to rank it higher, at least #3. Also Henry Ford is a proper university program. Admittedly Bronx is a better location than Detroit but HF is a quality program.

Hello everyone. Kinda stupid question but If you cannot make it to pre-dinner event before your interview day does it count against you?

Can someone give an input on the following programs and how to rank them:

University of Cincinnati
University of Louisville
West Virginia University

Thanks for the reply. And so it’s Washington Hospital. I’m pretty open to moving anywhere so trying to rank based on program quality.

I think as long as they get a good sense of who you are the day of you are good! I can't make it to one myself. Not worried but I'm always down for free food.

I think going shows you are interested in the program and conversely not going may be perceived by some as having less interest. But I think/hope that if you are a good candidate, not going to a dinner that is clearly defined as optional is not going hurt you too much.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if nobody even remembers who does and doesn’t go to dinner. I imagine at a lot of places it is much like the personal statement and unless you stand out in a big way (good or bad) it is not going to help or hurt.

Interested in solids, looking to come out clinically strong with some clinical research. Would likely practice after graduating in a large clinical center focusing on two or three areas of solids. Would you be able to help me rank these programs? Currently ranked according to my opinion. Thank you so much for your help.

Boston University
Dartmouth
Brown
OHSU
Tufts
UMass
Uni of South Carolina

If we submitted an abstract and it got rejected, there is zero point in mentioning it during interviews right? It’s part of a larger project so I feel comfortable talking about the project as a whole of course but I figured it would come off as ridiculous to mention working on something that won’t actually be published or presented.

Sorry if this is a really dumb question. Another resident I worked on the project with is adamant that he’s going to continue talking about the abstract during interviews and since my PD constantly tells me I have a tendency to sell myself short, I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t overlooking some reason why anyone would care about this.

Would put OHSU at #1 or #2 over Dartmouth. Otherwise looks ok.

Thank you very much. Appreciate it. If I can ask a quick question - in your opinion Boston University is better than Dartmouth (and maybe OHSU) despite the other two being NCI-designated? (Not sure if the designation really does matter though). But just wondering if you have experience with BU that made you choose it over Dartmouth and OHSU. Thank you.

Being NCI designated means the institution is committed to basic, translational and clinical research.

BU will probably give you strong clinical training but it’s not known for being a big research program. In Boston that’d be Dana Farber and BIDMC.

OHSU is an academic program without local competition. Similar things can be said for Dartmouth, though some people will inevitably go to Boston. Lebanon is just a really small place. Boston and Portland are much nicer.
