This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Inthian & KRS-1:
The NCI program I heard from is listed as the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center Program on ERAS. They sent the invite as a Fed Ex that I found under my doormat...Baylor just emailed this morning.

rejection from Fox Chase by mail.

wow, that first one hurts. sadly, i know there will be more, but still....🙁

No doubt that January will bring all of us happy news regarding many interviews!

🙂

Hi everyone--first post here. Glad to see there's a place to commiserate during this long process. So far, the (expected) rejection from Dana Farber, plus an invite from Vandy. Looking forward to the season ahead. Good luck to everyone.

After one rejection, programs have stopped contacting me....

boo hoo boo hoo😱

🙁
🙁

Wish you all a happy and prosperous new year.

BIDMC is a good program. Like some other programs they may also give you an indication if they are ranking you. However they not in the same league as Farber/MSKCC. I would say a notch above say Fox Chase. No idea about Cornell.

best of luck,
-S

hey guys,

got an invite from BIDMC today via email 🙂 whats the scoop on their program? i got the rejection from dana farber last week... how does BIDMC compare to the farber? is it analogous to mskcc (DF) and cornell (BID)?

sorry to bother you guys, but i know some of you MUST have some insight on the heme-onc lifestyle - I have had a hard time finding good information on the topic, and am quite curious - if anyone has any insight to share, it would be much appreciated! good luck to everyone 🙂

My first post here.. 79 applications out.. not 1 reply! I'm changing my status from EAD to GC and seeing if that makes any difference.

Docwa-

47 applications and not one invite or rejection here. Guess things are looking kinda grim, eh? Oh well. Just wish someone even had the decency of sending out a rejection letter. That would be something.

Hi everyone- no worries about no interviews/rejections! it's only the beginning of january. looking at the last two years' entries, the real letters came out january/february. there also seemed to have been a bi-modal peak in the interviews- january and then maybe march-ish. yes, the march-ish invites were probably "the second list," but, hey, does it really matter since many of those folks got accepted to a program? They just had to undergo a bit more stress until then! 🙂

Hey guys...

Hang in there... again the interview season has just started.. Late Jan/early Feb is when most of the invites will come... last year I didnt get get my first invite until 1/10 or so and I still had 8 invites out of 25 at the end... in my experience most program do not even send out rejections at all... and the latest invite I heard is in April... so there are still time... hang in there, too early to feel down...

Future Supply and Demand for Oncologists : Challenges to Assuring Access to Oncology Services
Clese Erikson, MPAff, Edward Salsberg, MPA, Gaetano Forte, BA, Suanna Bruinooge, BA, Michael Goldstein, MD
Purpose: To conduct a comprehensive analysis of supply of and demand for oncology services through 2020. This study was commissioned by the Board of Directors of ASCO.

Methods: New data on physician supply gathered from surveys of practicing oncologists, oncology fellows, and fellowship program directors were analyzed, along with 2005 American Medical Association Masterfile data on practicing medical oncologists, hematologists/oncologists, and gynecologic oncologists, to determine the baseline capacity and to forecast visit capacity through 2020. Demand for visits was calculated by applying age-, sex-, and time-from-diagnosis-visit rate data from the National Cancer Institute's analysis of the 1998 to 2002 Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database to the National Cancer Institute's cancer incidence and prevalence projections. The cancer incidence and prevalence projections were calculated by applying a 3-year average (2000–2002) of age- and sex-specific cancer rates from SEER to the US Census Bureau population projections released on March 2004. The baseline supply and demand forecasts assume no change in cancer care delivery and physician practice patterns. Alternate scenarios were constructed by changing assumptions in the baseline models.

Results: Demand for oncology services is expected to rise rapidly, driven by the aging and growth of the population and improvements in cancer survival rates, at the same time the oncology workforce is aging and retiring in increasing numbers. Demand is expected to rise 48% between 2005 and 2020. The supply of services provided by oncologists during this time is expected to grow more slowly, approximately 14%, based on the current age distribution and practice patterns of oncologists and the number of oncology fellowship positions. This translates into a shortage of 9.4 to 15.0 million visits, or 2,550 to 4,080 oncologists—roughly one-quarter to one-third of the 2005 supply. The baseline projections do not include any alterations based on changes in practice patterns, service use, or cancer treatments. Various alternate scenarios were also developed to show how supply and demand might change under different assumptions.

Conclusions: ASCO, policy makers, and the public have major challenges ahead of them to forestall likely shortages in the capacity to meet future demand for oncology services. A multifaceted strategy will be needed to ensure that Americans have access to oncology services in 2020, as no single action will fill the likely gap between supply and demand. Among the options to consider are increasing the number of oncology fellowship positions, increasing use of nonphysician clinicians, increasing the role of primary care physicians in the care of patients in remission, and redesigning service delivery.
Hi, MS0 guy doing some research into future fellowship path.
Do you think above report forecasts future establishment of ERAS Hemo/Onco programs in PA, NJ, NY, even DE area?
I'm hoping stay in the area(philly, PA) for residency and possibly fellow as well.

There are already 31 Hem/Onc fellowship programs in the NYC --> Philly corridor (most of them community but that's not really relevant to this discussion). Not sure how many more you need. If anything, I think it bodes for more programs in the west and mountain states. West of the Rockies (not counting California) there are a total of 7 Hem/Onc programs so if there's need for expansion, it's definitely in this area.

By email.....interviewing from jan through april... 2 days in a week (mondays and fridays).....Good luck!

first post = first rejection (Dana Farber)
GL everyone

Two Rejections one from DANA as expected other from Lenox hill

Got invites from UT Southwestern (email) and U of Colorado (phone call) today. Anyone else with interesting activity?

Sorry, I meant to say AOA approved programs.
It turns out only IL, OH, MI, has the AOA approved programs according to

Just wanted to find out if anyone has any news about upcoming/developing programs.

Thanks.

GL everyone, the next 4 weeks is going to make or break our interview seasons... invite from Maryland today... hope to see some of you guys there!

ghettomd- how'd maryland contact you (e-mail vs snailmail vs phone)

I agree that the next four weeks will be important. my reasoning (by the way, not really founded on anything in particular) is the following: if i don't hear about an interview by the end of January, then i'm either on the program's second tier list (annoying, but not horrible, since it still likely could end in a position) or i'm on the rejection list (sad). here's hoping for a flurry of phone calls, good e-mails, etc until Jan 31!
😳

Invited over email. Interviews in March and April.

1 rejection from the farber👎
1 invite from Fox Chase👍

Thanks everyone for sharing your details here. I am new to the forum and glad that I found this forum.

Applied to >70 programs. So far no replies. Hopefully I will get some replies soon.

Thanks to everyone for their contributions thus far! I'll add my info to the mix, although I'm still waiting to hear from most programs at this point:

interview offers (in order received):
1. Northwestern
2. Vanderbilt
3. Penn

still waiting for several others...

Invite from Penn today...
It's still the beginning of the process, from what I hear, so no worries for those waiting for the first interview. The interviews posted on this forum are still from a minority of the programs, and it's early.
Good luck everyone

Applied to 60 programs rejection from dana farber and beth israel...haven't heard from anyone else...getting anxious hopefully will hear more the next few weeks
