Hi guys...I've appreciated reading about your exploits along the application/interview process. Thanks to all for sharing. As a potential interview candidate this time next year, can anyone give me some input as to which months I should try to clear off in my schedule for interviews? We are in the process of negotiating schedules at my program right now, and I'd just like to know what month most interviews occur in. February? March? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

Interviewed of university of minessota waste of time...... they are interviewing 55 plus candidates for 6 spots. two faculty members to interview will interview for 5 mins.......... all people in my group complaint of same problem..... seem like residency interview...............

email invite from emory this past week...candidates asked to provide date/time preferences. still haven't heard from the others, so i wish they would just send the rejections as we're nearing APRIL. one applicant i met on a recent interview said he has an interview coming up at wash u, so they must have started giving out invites. based on my last 4 interviews, i have an impression some places are taking a lot of applicants internally or looking at folks with big research backgrounds, including many FMG's, who have had time to spend in the lab.

I am a little late to the game here. I applied to only one program at the last minute in march. Suffice it to say it has been mentioned here. Surprisingly I did get an interview. I'm hoping to be one of those atypical lucky bastards who applies to only one desired program and manages to match. They were interviewing 140 people for 4-5 spots.

They had mentioned when I was there that they were thinking of notifying "people of interest" before the actual match event, which we all know is a violation of the match. I was wondering if anyone had heard from any programs to the effect that they were ranking them. You don't need to give names. I am trying to decide if they realized it was a violation of the match and a bad idea or if I am not a "person of interest."

Yes I did from one midwest program. They said that I need to register with the NRMP as the PD wanted to rank me. I actually thot I would reg later....
But after the email, I reg that same night and got an email the next day saying the PD ranked me!!! Does that mean Its a good sign. I guess it is. Hoping for the best, BMT 😉

Same here. I just got an e-mail from a program asking to register with NRMP. No other communication otherwise except for the usual post interview end of the day dialogues (nice meeting you, let us know if you have any q etc etc..) 😕 .

How do we get those results at noon 6/21? Do we need to check the NRMP site or check our email? Other odd question...we can scramble to any open program right? Even if we never applied there? I am assuming it runs like the residency scramble.

Quote from NRMP regarding match violations.

3. A program director asks an applicant how he/she intends to rank the program, and states that the program will rank the applicant only if the applicant agrees to rank the program first on the applicant's rank order list. Although the Match Participation Agreement does not prohibit either an applicant or a program from volunteering how one plans to rank the other, it is a violation of the Match Participation Agreement to request such information.

It is a violation to ask you, but it is not a violation to voluntarily offer their plans on ranking.

Okay I see that on the website. Thanks. I am wondering if it is okay to call a program after the rank order lists are closed 6/7 to ask if you were even ranked. As I said earlier I only applied to one program where I live. I have job opportunities that would require me to move out of state. If there is a chance I could match, then I will turn down the job and not move away. I'm not crazy about being unemployed until after 6/21.

Technically after 6/7 neither they nor I could change our lists...any thoughts?

Nope, PD at U of New Mexico initially decided to give one prematch and left another spot for the match, but later he changes his mind and both positions will be filled during the match. However, I was told at Baylor that they have 4 positions, but NRMP site shows quota of 3. 😕

Yah, this is confusing. I've been checking out the quota on the programs I've ranked and some are decreasing and others increasing so I have no idea if at least for those decreasing if prematches were offered or if they traditionally like to hold 1-2 spots out of the match for internal applicants, or whatever... and I guess if a program completes its interview season and wasn't happy with internal apps then they add more spots to the quota which were initially reserved internally and whatever happens happens. Blah, blah blah... fast forward to the 21st already!

Just a curious question... if a program offers say 3 spots, how far down the rank list on average would it go to fill? Let's say this program isn't top notch, but still is competitive.

I want to keep both the Heme and Onc options open. SO a balanced program would be better, although at this time I am inclined towards heme. ANy thoughts welcome about the above programs mentioned. Thanks a lot....and GL.

If indeed you have interviewed at these places you should have an idea about the differences and probably also an idea about your interests, which ultimatly would reflect your ranking.
In general, for fellowship even more so then for residency, rankings don't really make sense, as it is more about your individual goals....
Factors that may influence your ranking are:
1.hematology vs oncology vs double boad
specially at some of the stronger programs there is a puch for single board. MSKCC for example makes ot rather hard to double board. others are stronger in heme then on onc or vice versa

2. clinical vs basic research
MDAnderson for example is a great place for clinical research, but not that great for basic research

3. practise vs academics
Fox Chase is a great clinical training program but not academic
Dana Farber is maybe the best research program, but not that great of a clinical training program

4. specific research interests
different institutions may have an edge in certain fields over others. (i will elaborate on that)

5. location or any other factors (family etc...)

now to your programs...i can not comment on Vanderbilt or Mayo

small program, clinical focus malignant heme and BMT..if these are your interest great place, otherwise there are better ones in Cali (UCLA or UCSF)

Yale
they try to revamp their training progra..at this moment not a top program( not even close), but double board with integrated training. research opportunities multiple at Yale university, no mentoring, quality of fellows sub-par, but academic institution, thus academic opportunities..probably not even a top 20 program

Fred Hutch

top program,. excellent in malignant heme and BMT( pretty much world class)
small class, world class research opportunities, great atmosphere
top 5-6 program, depending upon your interest probably even higher

Penn
top 4 at east coast, a tit below the top 3, but way above the rest
inegrated heme and onc( excellent heme), excellent basic research (top 3) clinically smaller. not that great in oncology with exceptions are GI, melanoma and breast)(head&neck does not really exist for example), fellows solely from top residencies (I guess it is the ivy league bias)
excellent BMT, but again small, expanding massively, which could go either way ( labor pain, vs post-fellowship opportunities), very friendly and supportive (disclaimer: for my own personal reason my #1)

U MIchigan
excellent clinical program, great research opportunities, good number of Pts, but suffers tremendously from location...does not get top candidates, however, PD extremely involved and motivated
