The threatening and other stuff was done after the fact, there are no reports of the student doing anything before he wrote the bad LOR. Im assuming the prof just didn't like him. I'm not saying that the student in question is a great person (he's obviously a nut job), but to say you will write someone a letter of rec and to knowingly destroy their future is just ****ing low. This is professor is not a victim, honestly I think he deserves worse. Power-hungry loser...
Oh, so you have intimate knowledge of exactly why the professor wrote the letter, you know the student didn't let his obvious nut-job personality show to this professor, and the prof wrote his letter because he is a "power-hungry loser..." Sorry, I didn't know you had so many other details not available in the article. 🙄

Don't know why you are so mad.....

And you are simply missing the point. If the professor didn't like the student, he shouldn't have written him a letter. Instead, he took it upon himself to make sure the world would never see him as a doctor, because he as a professor deemed him unfit. I would classify that as a power hungry loser. Imagine if a professor did that to you?

I totally agree. Maybe the professor saw the student acting stupid outside of class one night or something for all we know (Yes, we've all done something stupid at one point). He would have to have a really extreme reason to write this letter and totally ruin the kids career plans. Ya, the kid probably was a nut but I feel like the professor wouldn't be the only one to know this or figure it out and somewhere along the line the kid would have not made it or he would have changed his ways. I in no way condone his actions but who wouldn't be mad if you spent all that time preparing everything for your app, spent all that money, and truly desired the career to be back-stabbed by one guy.

Man, lots of good pre-med threads lately. The end of the admission cycle really brings out the best.

10/10, would be trolled again.

Awwww poor OP I do feel kind of sorry for you because you got completely shredded here, but really it would be in your best interest to humble yourself. Then you would make a great candidate all around!

Even though this student was obviously a complete nut job, I don't feel bad for professor dick head at all. Why not just refuse to write the letter? Why go out of your way to ruin a student's future? I really can't think of how you could be bigger jerk...

That's what I thought at first, but given what the student did, would you really want that person getting accepted?

I googled the students name and it looks like he is doing an internship through NYMC after going 5th pathway from UAG in guadalajara, mexico. So he is still going to be a licensed US physician.

Actually, if you read the news story, the student found out what the letter said after he broke in to the professor's office to steal a copy. Then came all the retaliation.

If you aren't a troll, I bet there is something written in one of your letters that is a red-flag. I know a few horror stories of professors who agreed to write a letter of rec and then ended up making sure that person never got in. One guy from my undergrad had a professor write that he would be afraid to have this person as his physician. The kid ended up coming back and giving death threats to the professor and mailing the police department and newspapers with a fake police report that the professor raped him. Good thing that professor wrote that letter.

And OP what are you going to do if you get rejected again? Honestly, I don't see you getting an acceptance at top 20 when it is your 3rd time applying. Why not actually apply broadly and take an acceptance if you get one?

Or perhaps the professor knew the guy was a psychopath? Judging by his over the top reaction, it seems perfectly fitting that the letter was written. A lying, borderline homicidal person has no place in medicine. Period.

According to the above posts by Agonist he does😱

Ya, he is actually doing an internship through NYMC which is scary. If you google his name, the news story comes up first, but then there's a bunch of weird pages that look like the student made for himself to dilute the "hits" in the google search.

For the sake of this argument, I'll assume that this professor is some prophet version of Freud who can gain deep psychological insight into all of his students through lecturing them on chemistry. This magical professor came to the conclusion that a student had a mental state and personality that made him unfit for medicine. Said student then comes to the professor asking for a letter of rec. Is the professor so sure of his psychological profiling skills that his opinion alone should be enough to keep this student out of medical school and crush his dreams? Is it possible that the professor just got the wrong impression? Should he go behind the student's back and write him a crappy letter without telling him? Is his future crushing decision ethical? Why is it the professor's place to decide whether or not a student gets into medical school or not? I thought that was what admissions were for?

In this specific case it turns out the student was a nut job. That still in no way justifies the professor's actions. He should have just not written him a letter. The fact that he couldn't give this student the slightest benefit of the doubt and went out of his way to crush his future leads me to believe that this is not the only student he did this to. Did these other students also deserve to have their futures crushed?

I hate to break it to you all, but not everyone is going to like you. I wouldn't be surprised if many people that you have interacted with would not want you as their doctor. Do you not deserve a chance at medicine because of that?

Sadly, many teacher's let their power over children go right to their head, and become disgusting creatures that serve only to burdens students and their family. I have no doubt in my mind that this is the case with this professor, and I have zero pity for him.

The same could be said about any adcom member or interviewer, except they only interact with you for an hour. If a prof goes out of their way to write a letter like it's probably for good reason as evidenced by the outcome. Either way, that student is doing a US internship right now.

To be honest I don't give a rat's ass about the student. I just really hate power hungry teachers and professors with inflated egos (I've had to deal with a ton trying to get my brother accomidations for being newly bipolar), and reading that article depicting this professor as a helpless, peaceful victim struck a chord with me.

And I don't have a problem with adcoms because it is their job to assess the student and all possible information about the student is provided to them (ie aren't judging them only by a first impression). In addition, an adcom is only for one school, they don't stomp out a student's future.

So you think the student is the victim of the prof? I still think he should have just declined the letter, but personally it bothers me that the student is now an intern after going to mexico for an MD and after being arrested for making death threats.

I think the student was a victim, but then he handled it in a psycopathic manner. There is no excuse for how the student acted, and he deserved to be put in jail. However, I still don't feel any remorse for the professor.

I agree with you though, the student becoming an MD after showing serious mental instability is disturbing.

I declare the student and professor both be exiled to Norway where they will train day and night in Nordic skiing while living in a 4th floor studio apartment. Problem solved.

Did you miss the part about how the student had to break into the prof's office to steal the letter? He would never have found out what the letter said if he didn't break into the office first.

Don't see how that is relevant. Like I said, the student's actions after this letter were inexcusable and psychopathic. Breaking into to the office was one of these actions, but the student was still a victim in that the professor went out of his way to keep him out of med school.

It just shows the student is unethical by nature. Maybe the threats could be passed off as reactionary. Sure, anybody would be mad, but the fact that he broke in to get that info shows something was wrong with guy. Perhaps the prof also noticed something wrong with him, and I'm sure adcoms definitely appreciate the prof being honest.

But I agree too, it was a d!ck move by the prof.

I'm confident that with my accomplishments, I'll get where I want to be -- THE TOP! To quote one of my favorite songs: "I get knocked down, but I get up again. You neva' gonna keep me down."

Remember it.

C'mon guys, when a kids quotes Chumbawumba (and especially if he claims it's one of his favorite songs), he's doing everything in his power to broadcast to you that he's merely trolling.

Get along, little doggies.

Troll thread gets to 4 pages? Sad day for SDN.

It turned into 4 pages because of an interesting tangent we went off on. I think most people realized OP was a troll a long time ago.

What exactly constitutes a troll? Is it someone who fabricates a story to get a reaction or someone who starts out with a real question and then just keeps offending people?
