High Point University Workman School of Dental Medicine Class of 2029 Interview/Acceptance Thread

A lot of people who are EC just got updated to under review or decision pending within the last couple weeks. There is still hope for everyone especially since the school hasn’t given out acceptances yet

@bigtimehoosier where are you when we need you most

Has anyone been accepted to HPU yet? I am EC and had interview August 26.

I just received my interview invite, and it is a little frustrating how soon the interview dates are to the day they send out the invite LOL. I have a job and they did not create much flexibility.

Reach out to them and say you would like to sign up for a later date. They may work with your schedule. They also mentioned in the email that they may open up a few more sessions or slots depending on the needs of people. If the interview date is too soon or conflicts with your work schedule, do not force yourself to attend one, sacrificing your work or other obligations. I know they are flexible and can work around your schedule. So, reach out to them as soon as possible.

FYI, there was one for November when I signed up. So, see if you can sign up for November. If not, tell them you would be considered for the November interview date if anyone gives up on their slot. Also, I know they always say the sooner, the better, but based on my experience, it is about how well you prepare for the interview rather than just attending the interview asap and bombing it. So yeah, see when you could attend and really prepare for the interview because, at this point, the interview is what is going to decide whether you will be accepted or not.

Hey for all of you who have just now received interviews, when did you guys apply if you don’t mind me asking? Congrats to everyone who’s finally received one. Goodluck!

August 27th - had my apps and Casper completed. Non-EC applicant. Received interview invitation last week for this Friday!

They invited me on the day of the very last interview via phone call back in February lol. I took a flight that morning and they treated me like a celebrity. Joining short notice and doing well makes an impression !

Hi guys! I applied to Workman EC and took Casper at the end of July and just received an interview invite on Monday. I immediately signed up for an interview this Friday and I noticed that the interview email says to "Submit the pre-interview exercise (sent one week prior to the interview date)." I haven't received anything, I guess probably because I signed up less than one week prior to the interview date. Should I reach out to HPU or did anyone receive this exercise a few days prior to their interview?

Yes For sure!!!! the Pre-Interview exercise will be discussed and a quiz given during the "Class session"

Thank you!! I called them and they emailed it right after. Time to get to work... I'm starting to freak out about this being only 2 days away🙂))
Only advice I can give you, is have a response for ALL the Sample interview questions, Prep for the Exercises, be yourself, and have fun! they are super laid back 🙂

Hey lets be careful not sharing information regarding the interview. We want to be sure to honor their request of not sharing information and also making sure it is fair for ALL applicants.

What did I share that they haven't already disclosed? Please advise! If you think telling someone to study sample questions and to be themselves is making them privy to anything regarding Interview day, I think you should re-evaluate 🙂 XOXOXO

I tagged one of your comments. Telling people what all the interview involves including when and that there is a quiz is disclosing information. People also do not know what questions will be asked, even if sample questions are given. Not trying to come at you, just wanting to be sure to advise you not to share too much information and harm your chances. Best of luck!

No need to tag , I have a good recall. 🙂 " People also do not know what questions will be asked" that's why i recommended to study ALL, as they mentioned in the email. Have you even had an interview because if you have you would know that Everything i said, they mentioned also ;-) Be blessed, seems as though you werent as prepared as you could have been if you did interview. don't stress it, Its done!

I went through the HPU interview process last year and wanted to share some advice. I over-prepared by practicing sample questions too much, which made me sound rehearsed and inauthentic. Instead of memorizing answers, try creating a mind map of key life stories you can reference naturally during the interview, and review your application in depth. Truthfully y'all, avoid over-practicing as it can increase nerves and make you sound scripted. I was told I seemed too nervous, partly because I over-prepared (stressed about not doing as well as I practiced with my pre-thought-out answers). Stay positive, relax, and remember that you're just talking about yourself and your beliefs, so the answers to the question are already embedded in yourself. My biggest take away from my interview at HPU and at other dental schools is to remember an interview is simply just a conversation, not something to overthink! In addition, it is important to remember that you are interviewing the school just as much as they interview you! They sent you and invite because they want you! 🙂 Feel free to reach out to me!

How was the interview guys? Goodluck to those in it right now. Any news on updates?

Also, does everyone’s status still just say “submitted” even tho its on decision pending when u open the application?

For the ones who got an interview, does it still say decision pending on the portal? Thank you!!

Anyone from the most recent interview group get word on when decisions would start to be sent out? I almost wish they followed the rules for other schools so we’d at least know when we would hear back if you had a pre Dec interview… This whole guessing game has been mentally exhausting & way too stressful, especially when we were supposed to hear back no later than 60 days from the interview date & June/July people were told August lol.

Does anyone know if there are any more scheduled interview dates these upcoming months? Or have they not revealed any of that info yet? Thank youu!

I’m confused. What was the point of telling applicants about hearing back within 60 days if they wouldn’t follow through? I’m sure they’re aware most dental schools don’t give updates until around December…so whylie? Is the lack of rejection updates to mitigate high turn over rates, in case most applicants get accepted elsewhere and turn down the offer?

I don't think that's what they're worried about. the cost to hold your seat is pretty cheap from the number I saw ($200---I could have the wrong figure but this is what I saw) --if they wanted to mitigate high turnover rates, they'd make that cost way more. I believe they didn't leave themselves enough time to thoroughly review candidates like they want to.

There's a balancing act with this. If you make the deposit too low, it won't mitigate melt because the sunk cost for the applicant is low. Make the deposit too high, the applicant won't put the deposit down if they have a choice at another institution. $200 is the cost of one night at a nice economy motel with included breakfast. However, $200 is small compared to the tuition bill that will be coming months from now. And you still don't know your financial aid.

Dental schools require a deposit (which could be partially refundable depending on the program) of around $1000 to $5000 per seat (some public schools offer an in-state deposit of $500-1000). Some schools ramp up deposits to better pay off the balance for your tuition for the first year. Some schools will offer significant scholarships starting in mid-December to highly desirable applicants.

To compare, MD schools can hold any offered seats with a REFUNDABLE $100 deposit until April (I think). Enrollment deposits are in the thousands to address the tuition bill that would be due before you start (though by that time, financial aid should kick in). DO schools often ask for $1000+ non-refundable, but that doesn't prevent melt. It's "insurance" for an offer that could/not come down later.

According to HPU WSDM's Admissions Model document (page 11), it's actually a $500 initial deposit, and then an additional $1000.

How do candidates reserve their spot once offered conditional acceptance?
During most of the cycle, admitted candidates must submit a $500 non-refundable deposit within thirty (30) days of the conditional admission offer to reserve a spot in the cohort. A second $1000 non-refundable deposit is due by March 31 to confirm enrollment. Please note, all deposits are applied to the first-year tuition at HPU. The distributed payment structure is to minimize large financial burdens on candidates and to acknowledge their intent to enroll in the program. Individuals who do not provide either deposit will automatically be ineligible for admission in the current cycle.

Deadlines for accepting an admission offer will decrease as the cycle progresses. Below are the anticipated timelines for acceptance confirmation based on the month of admission:
• April, May, & June – fourteen (14) days to confirm acceptance with a $500 deposit
• July 1 to 16 – forty-eight (48) hours to confirm acceptance with a waived deposit
• July 17 to August 1 – twenty-four (24) hours to confirm acceptance with a waived deposit
• August 1 to third day of class – twenty-four (24) hours to confirm acceptance with a waived deposit.
Regardless, I think you're right that they just didn't leave themselves enough time for review. I'd be curious to see how many applications they received each week this year vs last year. I expect the total number of applications will be higher this year, and I'd guess a higher percentage of those applications are from earlier in the cycle. Since WSDM is such a new school, it wouldn't be surprising if they see an increase in applications each year as A) more people hear of the program (ESPECIALLY considering their policy on the DAT and prereqs), and B) the school gains credibility.

What was your stats for receiving an interview?
CASPER: 4th Quartile
GPA: 3.6
BS in Biology, minors in business, health science, and psychology

What status does it say for everyone? Before you open the application where it says decision pending. Does it say “submitted”?

Nope, my Casper results have been delivered for almost 2 weeks, yet the portal still says awaiting Casper…
did u happen receive an interview before having ur casper taken/ submitted? i did & was wondering if tht might indicate the app itself was worthy of an interview? lmk!

app submitted 10/2
interview invite 10/17*day i also was taking caspr*
interview 11/2

Not exactly true. I’ve been looking at the stats. They say no prerequisites required, BUT I doubt you get accepted if you don’t have the major core science classes. 67% accepted have undergrad degree and 32% masters

great info, thank u! i’ve been trying to find this on their website, any specific tabs this is under? thanks in advance

Hi everyone, just wanted to send a quick congratulations to all those who have received an interview thus far.

I do have a question regarding the timeline of your applications since I am currently experiencing a stalemate.

I applied on August 21st, with my arrow moving to "under review" by the start of September. My application is still "under review." Regardless of whether or not this is a good or bad sign, I was curious if anyone else is in a similar boat? Thank you!

have u taken ur casper & acuity? the scores take 2 weeks to be received

okay then you’re all good!! just a matter of time you hear back & playing the waiting game
Yep! Is anyone else's portal still at "under review" after a few months? Just trying to gauge if this is normal for this round of applicants since I've seen a decent amount of people sit at "decision pending" for a few weeks at a time. Thanks!

My application was under review just for one month and then changed to decision pending.

Has anyone emailed admissions on an update? The 60 days since my interview is coming up, but since people who interviewed in June haven't heard anything either, I should just assume that there 60-day period they mention isn't being used.

No clue. They told people who interviewed in June & July that we would hear back in August, and other groups have been told various things from 60 days to mid fall to October, etc. so who knows right now. I’d love to know if somebody has sent an email though.
