How far down the rank list do people typically match in IM?

I've heard some people say usually top 3-5, but would like to get some more feedback. I've also heard you drop farther typically if you rank competitive programs, any ideas?

About this far.

There was a guy last year who interviewed at many competitive places and got matched to his 9th. We think it might have been that he seems like a a-hole the first 100 times you talk to him.

I believe the last time they broke it out by specialty was 2011. that's the best data there's going to be. And there's nothing more than anecdotal reports to answer the other question.

Somewhere in the archives there's an extensive discussion on this stuff, and I think the eventual conclusion was that there was a 93% probability of an IM applicant matching by the fifth spot on their ROL

Bump. I've interviewed at 10 places and I would be happy if I ended up matching at any of my top 6 choices. Should I go on more interviews? (I'm legit broke).

Not enough information to be specific but if you've got other interviews to go on (like you've been offered another 5 or so) then you're probably OK with what you have. That said...nobody can really tell until it's over. Statistics are fine but you won't 95% match, it's a binary outcome for you.

No one can answer this for you, as it all depends on the programs. If youve got enough safety programs you are probably fine. After both IM and GI match I felt like I had gone on too many interviews, but you just never know how it will shake out. There are lots of IM spots to go around, and it would be unlikely for you not to match in any of your top 10.
