How has coronavirus affected your University?

If I have to stay until December I’ll lose my mind. I have several friends in medical school and all of them are graduating on time despite what’s been going on. I’m having major regrets right now
 
If you can get your diploma this summer don’t even worry about the “graduation ceremony”. It’s exciting for you and your friends/ family, but it’s inconsequential. The diploma is what counts. But I’m sorry some of you guys may not have the opportunity to walk. Crazy times.

You in Endo residency, no? One of my friends is a first year Endo - and he was sent home indefinitely. The whole school was closed indefinitely. What do you think happens in these situations, clinically? Do they add and make up a semester if the school shutdown goes into summer?

I don’t care at all about the graduation ceremony. They can send me the diploma in the mail for all I care. I just want to be done with school and all its hurdles and bureaucratic BS.

More about the school. I think I’ll like real world dentistry, but we’ll see. If I ever get out of that god forsaken place.......

Yea, I am. So we are a 24 month masters program. It’s great, but the problem is for CODA to certify it we have very little wiggle room with the schedule. Basically 3 weeks off all year. So at this point, if we can get back into clinic mid April we may be ok, we will just lose our breaks. Whatever. But the reality is this will go into May. At that point I imagine we will just tack on as
much time as we missed. So instead of graduating late June, it will be late July (best case scenario) or August. Then the question becomes what happens to the incoming residents that was year (2021). Currently, our 2nd years have already defended their masters, have close to 300 cases and 10 surgeries so their “requirements” are sufficient. Question is, will CODA certify them though with this loss of time in residency. Lots of questions. No answers. But worst case scenario is we go from 24 month to 27 months.

That makes sense. So if you are a first year now, all that lost time have to be made up - and eventually residents could graduate mid to late summer next year? I’m assuming you are first year.

Also, everything else will be pushed back - applying for state licenses, and looking for jobs, etc. It could be the fall of next year before you could start your first job as an endodontist?

Yea, I am a 1st year. And yes, getting pushed back is a very real possibility. GI Bill has me covered for 36 months, but every month of lost (real life) income counts. Just taking it a day at a time and trying to keep reading/ learning. Nothing else we can do...

I’m in the exact same boat. This affects medical and dental residents across the board. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s plenty of wiggle room allowed for this.

Medical residents within a hospital are still expected to work, correct? Does that apply to all medical specialties?

When or what month will the “real possibility delay” kick in? I understand it varies from program to program - but I can’t imagine being it anything less than 2 months (9 weeks) of shutdown could cause significant delays? Which is about half a semester. That’s still a lot of time to catch up.

Just read an article - that the coronavirus strain in China and Italy don’t match, and this pandemic will be back with another big wave this fall, with no vaccines ready to control it. So dental schools and students are in for schedule crisis for at least a year. I’m sure the social distancing rules will apply throughout that period - even admission interviews will likely be effected.

We are in April this coming week. So additional 60 days lockdown is not unreasonable for States to impose on their residents. Most states said all high schools and below are out for the rest of the year - so my guess is Colleges and Professional programs will be too. I would be very surprised if they didn’t.

These are all best case scenarios. No state has peaked yet, and even if some do in the coming weeks - they will not be opening all businesses all at once. The ramp up process could at least take additional 2-3 months.

So Trump is saying June 1st things should be on the way to recovrery. I would add more time to that 🙄.

Hopefully CODA and ADA start giving us some details regarding their hopes long term.

CODA is having a meeting on April 2nd and we have a scheduled meeting with our dean on April 3rd.

Dentistry is extremely vulnerable to any virus pandemic. If covid-19 comes back in the fall, it could be under a different strain - and could close dental schools again for a longer period of time. We could be in lockdown on and off for a year until a safe vaccine becomes available to the masses.

We (student leaders at our school) had a conference call with our deans yesterday. CODA has not met yet, and thus schools have no guidance on what to do. Deans at many schools have decided to finish the curriculum and competencies for seniors online as much as possible under the assumption that when CODA meets, they will let it slide and they can graduate. For all other students, didactic courses are being rushed online, so when students can return, more clinic and sim lab time can be achieved. My guess is an August return date for students. Residencies have said they are not going to allow seniors to delay starting orientation, so it might be a showdown between dental schools and residency programs.

Seniors here asked their programs what happens if I don’t get my degree on time due to the situation and the response “If you’re not hereyou’ve broken contract and are forfeiting your spot”. That’s what I’ve heard.

The amount of rumors on this thread are absurd. At least the facebook group with like 4,000+ D4s actually has up to date facts, check that out. Essentially no one knows anything. CODA hasnt even met and they sent out a specific schedule on when things will be decided, which isnt until Mid May. Same with boards etc. even if CODA does waive anything that means nothing if you dont have a license. Even if you get a license (other than those who already completed ADEX) doesnt mean a state will accept it if the boards are switched to typodont etc.

There are at least 3 HUGE hoops to jump through.

Graduating - Dependent upon CODA and Schools

Licensing- Will Wreb/Adex continue? Become typodont? Will the OSCE actually be started like they say it will? Licensure upon graduation?

Individual States - If California gives you a license for graduating it wont help if you move elsewhere. If one state lets you take Typodont based boards and you move to California will they accept it since its notnon a patient? Lots and lots of possibilities here.


Assuming all three of those hoops can be jumped through, when will offices even open back up? Who is hiring? Who will be retiring any time soon?

And then there are residencies. My residency (OMFS 6yr) didnt seem too worried. Idk how any of them can say you break contracts good luck, because most incoming residents are going to break contracts if CODA doesnt let them get a degree. That being said, at least for most residency you only have to worry about getting a degree and you xan worry about licensure later. But even that’s going to suck when you cant find patients or being in dental school like before.

Long story short, it’s a mess and I hope this problem now can help us address the bigger issues that exists and are being put in the spotlight now. But for us now, everything is just guessing at this point. How can anyone decide anything when we dont even know how long this will last.

I feel like most of the misinformation and conjecture is being put out by D1, D2 and D3. Most haven't thought past their current year curriculum to licensing, graduation, job markets, etc.
Then again, it's SDN, so are we really that surprised?

My school downplayed the virus, said it was low risk and that they expected students to keep working, right up until the national emergency was declared and then they reluctantly let everyone go home. Ran out of masks and they still wanted us to keep coming in... All of the patients were canceling their appts anyway, there wasn't much of a point in staying open. My class was crazy stressed and lashing out at each other and our student leaders (E board) and acting really selfishly, until everything was moved online thank god

Taking online exams now and someone in our class got the highest score on a really hard exam that our professor has ever seen in their 40 years of teaching, they were really happy for us until we were informed of a cheating scandal... Well see how that goes....This whole situation is being handled terribly and has really made me despise my school and dental school in general. my impression is that 4th years are getting screwed the most and everyone else is also getting screwed, including the incoming D1's who will likely start with online school. the current D1's seem ok for the most part
 
I hear the dean of Detroit Mercy had a online meeting and is making the D4s come back May 27 to start the summer semester finish their requirements as D5s and stay the summer semester if need be.....

With all classes going online and students have the option to switch to P/F, I think it’s actually a blessing for the D1’s and D2’s at my school. They do not have to show up for those useless mandatory classes, have more time to focus on classes that really matter, do not really have to worry about their grades anymore, and they’re not in clinic anyways so they aren’t screwed in term of clinic time. And yes D4’s are the ones getting screwed the most.

not if classes aren't P/F and they reschedule the useless mandatory classes later... they want people to come in on the weekends to catch up upon our return. My classmates worried about their grades enough to cheat... Our dear student leaders are meeting with administration this week, so hopefully hear some news soon. will probably be more bad news though... 🙁
 
There was an email sent out that the DLOSCE exam will be ready in June (or July cant remember which one).

There should be lots of pressure on the different states to accept this exam. It would solve a huge amount of issues. Hopefully common sense prevails

Yeah a blessing except for D2s who were in their last quarter of preclinic crunch time and were supposed to start seeing patients in June....

Ooof same. We have a 2nd/4th year project here where we do 1 direct and 1 indirect procedure together, and last quarter my D4 and I only did my direct project because I was studying for boards, and we planned to do an indirect project this quarter but looks like we won't be having that experience anymore 😕 I don't feel ready to handle a whole indirect case on my own yet :arghh:😳
