How many schools did you apply to?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
19 schools. Stayed away from texas, oklahoma, and Cali

For those of you who have already submitted AACOMAS, how many schools did you apply to total?

The average number nationwide is 6 schools. Still, some peopole apply to one school and some apply to 20-- but the average has been around 5 or 6 for quite a few years. AACOM has the statistics on their site if you want to look at them.

I applied to 3 D.O. schools. I don't know how people can apply to 10+ schools and handle all of these secondaries applications. Many schools give everyone a secondary as long as you have a 2.7 - 2.8 GPA. And that runs you another $50 - $100 each. I think you should apply to your state schools, a couple within your standards and one that's far fetched! Of course, I'd stay away from schools that don't like OOS if you are OOS.

I hadn't actually thought too much about that yet. I'm glad you mentioned it. My husband and I are planning on applying to about 15 schools so we'll have to see which ones send secondaries automatically and which ones screen. For now it's 15.

I applied to six DO and two MD schools. My first choice is OSU and I'm out of state but I'm going to give it a good try anyway.

27 AMCAS schools and 7 DO schools = 34 schools for primary app.

I get my MCAT score on/around 7/6 and that will be the deciding factor whether I continue with 34 secondaries or weed it down.

I only want to do this once, you know?!

I did 12 schools, which worked out well. Although in retrospect, I would have cut out one or two of the schools that had $200 secondary fees, such as the Touros. Overall, I think low-mid teens is a good range, especially if you're also applying Allo.

I applied to a huge amoutn with AMCAS and AACOMAS... I think the total was in the upper-20's. Despite that, I only completed 17 secondary applications... of those, I completed my application at 4 DO schools (PCOM, UMDNJ-SOM, WVSOM, CCOM.. and NYCOM never gave me the opportunity) and the rest were regional MD schools. End result: No MD interviews and 3 DO interviews (CCOM, PCOM, WVSOM).

I applied to nine D.O. schools and got 3 D.O. interviews. I turned two of them down once I got the NYCOM acceptance.

Hi everyone,
I remember last application cycle someone had put up all the stats for the DO schools as far as the average gpa and MCAT of the accepted students. I can't seem to find it now. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

thanks

I applied to 7 DO schools. I love the osteopathic philosophy and I'm DO all the way!

There is no universally "right" number of schools to apply to.

You have to look at how competitive your application is...

How are your stats?
Does your app have significant drawbacks that must be overcome? (i.e. past academic difficulties)
Does your state residency not help?

Some people can get away with applying only to their top few schools... some people need to apply to 20+.

As I sit here listening to Dr. Edward Goljan giving his famous USMLE prep lectures, I would have applied to OSU also. The guy is amazing & probably single-handedly makes the school worth any money you would pay to go there.

I applied to 10 DO schools. Got interview offers at 5, went to three, turned down LECOM and NYCOM once I found out I got into UNE. Luckily my fiancee wife now) and I were apart for that summer during college and I had nothing to do, so I worked two jobs to save money for interviews and such...

note: don't say in your interview the reason you decided to apply to a school is because you were filling out your AACOMAS application and decided it wouldn't hurt to apply to another school just to "see what happens," that's a good way to get yourself a rejection letter, like I did.

and of course that is a legal copy right? Rumor has it that he's retiring soon but that's been the rumor for the past 2 years! Even so OSU was my number choice until I had to move.

I'm going to be applying to 2 DO schools as I'm restricted by my location.

For those of you interested in checking out to see if your DO school has been "reviewed" by SDN'ers, check it out

Applied to 4 DO schools: NYCOM, TouroCom, PCOM, UMDNJ
Applied to 17 MD schools: New York Medical College, SUNY Downstate, Albany, U at Buffalo, SUNY Upstate, Stony Brook, Drexel, Jefferson, Temple, George Washington, Morehouse, Loyola, Rosalind Franklin, U of Illinois at Chicago, Eastern Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth, Toledo

3.2 Science, 3.5 Overall, 3.8 non-science
Good ECs, good letters, Research
Waiting to take MCAT, hoping for a 30.

Hope this list helps other people!

16 - DO
20 - MD
3 - Caribb

Good lord, somebody has got to give me a chance!

i actually i'm apply to every DO school, even those with strong biases. i'm spending atleast 500 applying, another 300 wont kill me to apply to ALL of em. the way i look at it, why limit my chances? even if they ARE <10%?

as for MD, about 25 schools, except the ones that have a state residency requirement or are "state funded" cause those are all super super instate preferred

Call me nuts, but I applied to only one DO school - ATSU-KCOM. This way, I won't have to move or do anything else when I finish my MS thesis. Just enjoy 3 months of freedom before I start medical school 😀

I applied to a total of eleven, most in the eastern part of the country.

10 AMCAS School and about 7 DO Schools.....

......it should be a fun run

I applied to 21 DO schools. I have a very poor GPA with a pretty decent MCAT, so I knew it would be a stab in the dark, and it worked for me! My $2000+ (primaries, secondaries, interviews) was a great investment. I would do it again.

I applied to 18 MD schools in June, with 4 screening me out off the bat pre-secondary.
I applied to 10 DO schools in July, then adding LMU-DCOM when that was available in September, totalling 11.
I got 2 interviews, and 2 acceptances: LMU-DCOM and LECOM-Erie.

MCAT 10B 10P 6P= 26O (2nd time, first time was 24O)
GPA= 3.4 and science 3.1
Lots of ECs and LORs

Good luck!

Applied to 2 MD schools and 9 DO schools.
Got interviews at 1 MD and 7 DO
Accepted at 6 DO (turned down 1 interview) and 0 MD

Last cycle I applied to only 5 DO schools. Interviewed at 2 and accepted at 2.
