Man I really really really feel for all you guys out there. This was mentioned in another posting (not to throw salt on your wounds), but you have to factor in interest. Once you're done with school, securing a business loan to buy/start a practice will be more difficult. Although educational debt is in a different category, most lenders will looks at this debt; it will influence their decision. And the business climate isn't as "liquid" as it used to be.
I graduated in '05 from UCONN and will finish my endo residency in 2011. Best advice I ever got was to live frugally and look for value in education. Debt from college and dental school is under 150K, there is no tuition at my residency and I get a stipend.
We'll all make it; but you have to possess a pragmatic perspective on life and live WELL within your means. The baby boomers were well known for saving and living within their means; it's something we can all learn.
. Air Force, by FAR. I would have joined before starting D-school but my wife wouldn't have it. I ended up getting the NHSC scholarship 'though, so my debt won't be too crazy.
Are there any practicing dentists out there havin a hard time paying off loans and debt from school? It looks like a lot of stuff, but hopefully, it's managable.
Ramen is still my favorite meal of the day and beef jerky is a my subsitute for fillet mignon
