How much do academic anesthesiologists make?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It differs by region but I think they are pulling in at least like 3 million a year.

You forgot the 750K sign on bonus, PD4.

That makes it almost 4 mil!!!!

Your tax dollars at work.

Can't wait, until Obama gets in and nationalizes health Care. Then you will miss the good old days when you could make as much as 98k per year.

Those are last year's numbers, Salaries have gone up slightly.

Academic Anesthesiologists at;

Colleges, Universities, and Professional Schools

$51.43 per hour

$106,970 per year

All I can say, Slim, is

your numbers are off.

Apparently you aren't informed enough to know you're propagating a bad study.

Depends on the location/private/public, hospital subsidy. The lowest start I've heard of recently is around 200K plus benefits. Most places will start at mid 200s. Slightly below private practice.

I just interviewed for a fellowship at a large program on the west coast, and they offer a sort-of sign-on deal where if you commit to two years (one year of fellowship and one year as an attg), they pay your attg year at 190K. During my interview, I heard two things from two people well-acquainted with the deal:

1) through a reasonable amount of bonus, productivity, and moonlighting within the dept, 250K is realistic and if you really push it, you can get to the low 300K range that first attg year.

2) this program pays in the bottom 3% of academic anesthesiology programs...

Hope that helps...

It's going to vary with the institution. Some will pay more than others. In general, they're going to pay less than the private practice gigs in the same location. That said, you can make plenty of money in academics, more than in some private practices. If you like academics, don't let the pay scare you off.

I can guarantee that it's much better than the DOL study. Much, much better. That may be a realistic number working a couple days a week with no call. But not even close to what a full time academic person makes. I know quite a few academics that work 4 days per week. It can also be very flexible. If an academic has an emergency, it's not overly difficult to get someone to cover, but in private practice running your own room, it may be difficult getting someone to cover. Likewise, if you need to work less for a period of time (new baby, family issues, etc), that's no problem, but could be a problem for private practices.

Our program: large academic center in South.

Starting: 200K, +20K for academic package (extra teaching), +10K for extra call. Roughly 230K.

Peds: 230K starting, above deals apply, plus added bonuses. Roughly 280K.

Cardiac: same as peds, added bonuses. Roughly 290K total

Critical care: roughly 250K total

All these are starting out of fellowhip/residency.

my academic offers (which i promptly turned down) ranged between 185k and 220k --- they did include nice retirement plans with good matching ---

You could just look up some of the offers on GasWorks.

At my school in NY, the brand new attendings get 225K or so, with short call/long call bonuses etc.

Does CV anesthesia bank more than anesthesia trained pain doc?

You're pretty much entirely derailing the thread with that question, particularly since it's something you can find out yourself with a little searching. Dig around a bit first and if you have further questions you can start your own thread.

Hey my bad in fact I will edit it out 🙂 . Sorry, certainly no intent to derail here! Actually a very noob post on my part.

In academia they should be about equal. The departments I looked at were all equal. Year 1 got this much, year 2, etc. More for more call, but everyone had to take the same base amount. CV will likely have more call that they have to go in for though (bring backs, late emergencies, transplants)...Not much pain stuff happens at night that can't be handled by a resident/fellow team.

I don't think that it would be appropropriate to name names. People's salaries are not necessarily secret but they are not public information either, though sometimes they are. If you are interested in Texas or the South, call around and if the programs are interested in you they will release their compensation figures. I would not waste your time interviewing anywhere that was not up front about basic salary information and clinical workload. There is plenty of money to be made in Anesthesia if you are willing to work hard and be efficient. Take a look in Alaska, the Anesthesia money is almost as good as the oil money!
Regards,

I've heard that too. But whenever I see an Alaska job posting for it seems pretty average. I hope its true though because I would move to Alaska in a heartbeat.
