Just curious, I'm just a lowly undergrad, but do you get used to them or do you avoid them like the plague. If you want to go into ridiculously competitive residencies do you need to do all-nighters often?

I'm an undergrad too. I was averaging about 2 all-nighters a week last semester, but that was mostly due to me working close to full time and taking 18 credits of upper-division science classes. This semester, I cut back at work, and the only time I've had to pull one is when I waited till the last minute to write a 10-page lab paper. I think it's all about proper time management... I would assume med school is no different, but you know what they say about assuming 😛

The only all-nighter that you will be doing in medical school is call during third year. All-nighters are unnecessary during the first 2 years.

Never pulled an all nighter...except when I just couldn't sleep the night before my renal physiology exam. That was a total waste of being awake though...

If you are doing all nighters all the time, you are doing something wrong. You don't need to do all nighters, yea I do sleep 3-4 hrs on a test night, or maybe 1-2 if I really need to, but all nighters, very rarely if ever. If anything they will hurt you.

Best prep is to be consistent, and you won't need to pull any all nighters.

The only time I pull all-nighters is when I'm out drinking with my buddies 'til the sun comes up. Used to happen a lot more often than it does now. 🙁

I think that 5-6 hrs of sleep does me more good on the night before a test than staying up and studying for the same amount of time.

The most I ever studied in a single day during the first 2 years was before one of our neuro exams. I probably studied for 10 hrs or so. In medical school you really don't have to study more than a few hours a day, as long as you do it every day. I ran into problems when I would go several days without opening a book. Of course, this is much more than undergrad.

Actually, the people who perform best in the pre-clinical years have their **** together well enough that they don't need to pull all-nighters. My classmates pulling all-nighters are usually the ones that didn't really study that much until right before the test.

best just to try to study a little every day. Way too much stuff to try to cram for exams.

the only all nighers i pull are when out partying. i only pulled 2 all nighters. once because i could not sleep (laid in bed tossing and turning) before first biochem exam. the second all nighter was because it was at the end of an exam week and i had 4 exams that week (t, w, 2 on thurs) and i had to study all night for the friday exam. i also worked 20 hrs a week.

right on the money.

Although I find myself in full cram mode for almost every test. I rarely get more than 3-4 hours of sleep the night before a test. I've only pulled 1 true all nighter in my first two years. Most of the time these tests require so much thinking that you need at least a small degree of rest unless you want your brain to melt and ooze out all over the paper.

Another problem that I know all too well is "cycle studying" where you end up focusing on that one big test you have in 3 days but at the same time you forget about everything else then have to play catch up. It really does become a pretty vicious cycle during busy times of the semester.....I guess it all depends on how your school handles their test scheduling.

All nighters in undergrad --> 1

All nighers in med school --> 0

No sleep = poor grade
