Anyone have an idea how tough it is to get a VA residency? I'm thinking about applying in Buffalo, Seattle, Chicago, and NYC. Any advice on matching to these sites, or generally?

Especially with the northeast programs, I would ask about how other providers accept/view/utilize pharmacists.
I've heard great things about the Bronx (especially for geriatrics and ID), but not so much about the other NYC VAs.
Unless things have changed, you'll need to be self-motivated at Buffalo's program. In terms of location you'd be in the middle of some good fellowship opportunities, and they just started a PGY-2 in psych if I'm not mistaken.
I've been looking at a lot of VA programs too. In general how competitive are they compared to other residency programs? Also, do VAs require you to get licensed in the state the VA is located in or is one state licensure good across all 50 states like with the IHS residencies?

You are a federal employee so you only need one state license. But I think I would get a license at the state I physically worked in also, you may want to moonlight from time to time or a nice part-time opportunity outside the VA may present itself.
