Hi folks-

Help me out here.

Today, 8/2/04, I received two letters from Howard University. One asks for me to complete a secondary, send photo, send money, et. al. I open the other letter, and it invites me to come to an interview.

Is Howard notoriously unorganized? You know what they say about first impressions....Could it be a mistake?

I will call tomorrow, if I can get a minute away from work. Just wondering what others have seen.

They might be like Pitt, and give interviews to select applicants pre-secondary.

Hmmm, well I only got the secondary... I hope it doesn't mean what I think it may mean....

Any how, I understand they aren't 'known' for their organization. A quick call should clear things up. Let us know what they tell you. Thanks...

Bigdan...have u contacted the school?

Howard usually does one of 2 things. You either get both interview invite and secondary at the same time or they give you the secondary when you show up for your interview. If you havent recieved the secondary, then make sure u ask for it when u interview. The secondary os just a way for them to charge u the application fee. theres no question on there that you havent alreay asnwered on in some other form on the amcas, aside from in-progress courses. dont frett.

well at least you received both, that's gotta be a good sign right. 😀

Update here folks.

I called Howard this afternoon. The lady that answered the phone checked to make sure that I didn't get the interview letter by mistake - I was supposed to get it; I was "on the list". They still want me to send them money...err...fill out the secondary.

At least you know your money is going to a school that is actually considering you, which is more than a lot of schools can say.

my secondary from howard was a mess...

they sent me one from the 2003-2004 application cycle and crossed out the '3' and '4' and wrote in above it '4' and '5' to make is 2004-2005 application cycle. THEN.. the interview letter had grammatical errors in it.. and they stuck my mailing address label over the first half of the letter... come on howard..get it together!!!

I really want an interview. I was just recently processed so I am hoping to here from them soon :luck:

I've heard they are really unorganized but that is heresay.

I really don't want to open up a can of worms but I have a question about Howard. If anyone has attended or is familiar with the school, please PM me.

LR-

I echo your sentiments.

I give a big thanks to Chalkette for pointing out that there maybe just students behind the scenes. But I'm somewhat intrigued that Howard doesn't realize that the letters are the first direct contact with the medical college that many of us have...does that not matter to them, and if it does, does their budget not make room for someone that can retype a letter or correct typos?

I have a TERRIBLE feeling about the school right now, to be frank. But how do I justify not taking an interview? If I don't get in, I'd kick myself forever for cancelling this interview. Even reading on InterviewFeedback stirred up more negative thoughts.

This may just be the sign that this isn't the right school for me under any circumstance. But I think I've got to apply to see for myself. I've asked for an interview on Sept 21, so I'll let people know how things play out.

I personally don't think Howard owes anyone an explanation about ANYTHING. Unlike a lot of other med schools with virtually unlimited funding resources, I think Howard does the best it can with what it has.

The fact is that Howard isn't begging for ANYONE to apply. I imagine they could easily fill their classes with the children of legacies, ect if they wanted too since like other med school they have far more applicants than spaces to fill. But what they do is give a fair and equal shot of succeeding in med school to students other schools wouldn't give a second thought to.

When I read the interview feedback and see people complaining about how "old" everyitng is all I can say to myself is what int he he!! does the "age" of a building, piece of equipment, ect, ect have to do with the fact that education is what you make it? The only thing you can control is yourself so if you use plain ol' common sense, like making sure you have a copy of EVERYTHING you send to Howard, then you'll be OK.

Very true, very true.
I am sorry to hear that people are having so many problems with the howard admissions department. I know how frustating it can be to deal with some schools that appear to be disorganized since the whole process is as stressful as it is. Just think of it as another hoop you have to jump through to get into med school. I can say that things are better once you actually start your education at howard. No school is perfect and howard certainly has its share of problems, but like pathdr2b said, your education is what you make of it.
I am so sick of hearing everyone complain about every little thing that doesnt go how they want. A tip for life in general: focus on the things you can control and try your best to tolerate/ignore the things you cant. This will make things run a lot more smoothly for you, trust me. If you really want something out of life, or in this admissions process more specifically, try to keep a positive attitude and not waste time complaining about everything. You could miss out on a lot of great opportunities.
Howard is a great school. I wish more people would give it a chance instead of judging it so quickly...

Feel free to PM me, if yall have any specific questions about howard.

Points taken, RLMD and pathdr2b. Thanks for the reality check.

I was certainly more frustrated over the last two days, and it is evidenced in my posts. I am pushing forward, and I am giving Howard a chance. My frustration, I guess, was in comparing Howard's inital contact with me thru the Admissions Committee with those from other schools. As the one adage goes, "you never get a second chance to make a first impression"; as another adage counters: "Don't judge a book by its cover". All a matter of perspective.

I'll let folks know how things go.

HU usually does that, to those who meet a certain MCAT and GPA. I know several who got that the past few yrs.

just curiuous...does anyone know what the gpa and mcat cutoffs are approx for the immediate interviews?

Along with the secondary, they sent little cards that need to be given to people who write the LOR and attach it along with the letter. I already have all of my LOR's in Interfolio...how do I go about attaching the card to the letters in Interfolio?

does anyone know????

Is it just me or is there no essay for Howard's secondary?

@Chiku, yeah there's no essa, short and can be done in a few mins

@bigdan, yeah ur stats are the reason why u got the interview invite immediately, it makes sense, cause they've always done it like that...goodluck!
