so...small dilemma here:

Soon to be sophomore, but my grades are kinda pretty ****ty...

Calc 1: AP Credit
Bio 1/Lab: C+/C
Bio 2/Lab: C+/C+
Chem 1/Lab: B/A
Stat: B
Animal Science: B

i know i still have "3" years left [which actually seems pretty fast to me lol] buttttt....

1. should i retake my Bios? i realllyyyyyyyyy don't want to though, bc i hated it so much [even though i know bio is pretty much in EVERYTHING! lol] but would my Cs be that big of a negative thing on my app where the schools would frown upon it?

2. should i take Calc in college? i passed with a 3 [but knew i would've gotten higher since i left the exam early to do a HSM audition...] Since UF is my IS, i know it takes my AP score, but would it be of major importance to other schools?

**oh i plan on making straight A's fo lyfe noww. lol. in an attempt to raise my GPA. but like that's going to happen...sighhh...haha 🙄

PS. has anyone caught a glimpse of the Perseid meteor shower? i'm awake on my bed trying to stay awake on SDN with my windows wide open to try to see the "shooting stars"...and they are magnificent! 😀

Take your grades more seriously! I also got C's in two out of the three bio series, and there's no way in hell I was going to retake those. Retaking classes that you received a C or better in is a waste of time, IMO, and here's why:

1. Calculate out your "required sciences" GPA, assuming you get A's for the classes you haven't taken yet. Now add two additional "A"s for those bio classes and see if that changes your GPA significantly. My intuition says it doesn't.
2. Do the same thing for your cumulative GPA. If you graduate with ~120 units, adding two more "A"s (most school don't let you replace C's) isn't going to do as much as you think.

(ok, now I'm going to yell a little, from C-person to C-person, in an attempt to motivate and SAVE you)

:boom: STOP GETTING C's!! :boom:
:boom: Retaking classes is NOT AN OPTION!! :boom:

Get A'S the FIRST TIME, or else you will end up like me,
:boom: R-E-J-E-C-T-E-D, :boom:
:boom: YEAR AFTER YEAR :boom:
until F-I-N-A-L-L-Y getting in on the third try.

:boom:JUST SAY NO TO C's!!:boom:

i wouldn't retake these classes. they're basic sciences. and you're in your first year - a lot of people experience a dip in their first year.

you'll likely have to do better in (or retake) the later units, though.

no sense in taking calc unless you like it. you have credit for it (that's a c or better). it neither helps nor harms your gpa now, but certainly can harm if you don't ace it. and now you've taken stats, too. doesn't that meet the req'ts of most schools?

ah, the road to hell is paved with good intentions 🙂. i hope you meet your plan of earning a's.

A lot of schools concentrate on your final 45-60 credit hours, so you may be in luck. The unfortunate part about c's is that you are right on that line. If it were a D there would be no question. However, being on that line, they do have a huge impact on your gpa.

I would say leave these classes alone, and make sure from now on you put your best foot forward and ensure you get no more c's. I had one in college, and the damper it put on my gpa was KILLER.

sometimes I think a c is worse than an f. You obviously tried, but did not fully succeed. An F would indicate that you really weren't putting everything you had into it, and you would make the clear decision to try again.

I don't envy your position, but just concentrate on these next three years, and it is likely that your freshman year will be forgotten 🙂

I wouldn't worry so much about the Cs in your freshman classes.

However, these were INTRO bio courses, now, some schools have so many bio majors they try to weed them out in the first 2 years. I don't know if your school is like that, But really you will need to do better in the high level courses .

I just finished re-taking organic chemistry (got a C- second semester when I originally took it). and let me tell you from experience, I WISH I had just taken the extra time when I was in school to just get the grades that I knew I was capable of getting. Now I had a great time in college, and I don't regret that one bit, but I could have put in some extra study time to get the A instead of the B for most of my courses (or the C- in orgo II's case).

It is a pain in the butt, not to mention expensive! to re-take classes. So, this is your motivator: do well now the first time through. None of these classes are impossible. it just takes the time and focus to pull it off.

good luck this year!

Actually a C for me pretty much indicates that I didn't try, or that I put very, very minimal effort into it*. B is my "try but not fully succeed" grade.

And I do agree that it sucks because C's can't be retaken and are just always there! Let's just say I have...more than one.

*this does not apply to DiffEq. that C was hard earned with sweat, blood and tears

haha thanks! 😀

ahhh i hope i do too!

good point! i slacked off alot in bio1, but bio2 i really actually studied and was pissed that i still got a C...oh wells....

and phew! that's nice to know!

thanks y'all. so yeahh...i guess i pretty much just have to make A's from now on....goodbye social life lol

The other part to remember is that some schools only average retakes with the original.

Also, if you are struggling...as in studying hard and NOT getting the material, not recalling the material, or getting a grade you find unacceptable, GET HELP IMMEDIATLY! Professor, TA, fellow student, learning center, tutor, etc. Don't wait till you have to dig yourself out from exams, semester is in full swing, and everyone's too busy.
