IM Official Rejection 2010-2011 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
haha, couldn't help but reply to this. I got UNC and Yale so far also. 👎

My gf has gotten rejections from UTSW, Tufts, and UNC.

Applied 4th week of sept.

Rejections: UWash (one of my top choices-so sad)/UofWisc

Yale for me.

anyone who applied to yale in early October got rejected yet? Just curious.

+Tufts for me as well. The rejections had to start somewhere I suppose. Better than endless silence?

Looking back at the old rejection threads, it seems that the first flood of rejections came on Nov. 6th. Which is tomorrow and a Saturday. So I guess we'll have to wait through the weekend...

Unc, tufts, Hopkins bayview 🙁....and NO interviews since MSPE...should I be worried?

Blight, when did you hear from bayview? Thanks.

there is more activity on this thread than the interview thread. I got the boot from VCU.

Me too. I really don't understand.
My stats for kicks:
Top 10 school
Step 1: 255
Clinical Grades: Honors in IM, Peds, Surg, FM. HP Ob/gyn and Psych. Honored Sub-I.
Letters of Rec: Exceptional. One from a big wig. Dean even indicated that in his summary he would state that I was one of the best students to come out of our school in the last 6 years.
9 publications
MPH
Tons and tons of extracurriculars, Global health experience

Oh and I received early interview offers from programs like UCSF, Stanford, Columbia, Wash U

In summary, I wasn't expecting to get interviews everywhere, but I didn't think NW would be the one rejecting me!
You can probably call them up and see if they'll reconsider (if you're really interested in going to NW).

Yeah...I mean I had a couple less honors on clerkships but similar other stats. I, too, didn't get an interview there. wtf NW?

Get real. You weren't going to seriously consider them, and they know it too.

Who cares about NW. You already have some great places!

That sucks that you got rejected, but I think they probably didn't want to waste a spot on someone who would not go there. Having gotten interviews at the other 4 places, you're probably going to match at one of those, all of which, I would guess, are more desirable for you than NWU. This is of course, just a guess. You might have a very good reason you want to be in Chicago. My stats are much less stellar than yours and NWU was one of the first interview offers I received. Then again, they are one of my top choices.

that is seriously ****ed up that places reject stellar applicants because they think they won't go there... what if they do? it's pretty common for people to pick less competitive programs due to location.

OP, if you actually did want to go there, perhaps it isn't unreasonable to write a letter of interest and ask them to reconsider

Northwestern is by far the most competitive non top-tier program, which is undoubtedly because so many people want to live in Chicago and work on Michigan Avenue. It's a strong program, but nowhere in the league of programs with similar competitiveness (i.e. MGH, B&W, UCSF, Hopkins, Columbia).

Northwestern is a prime example of why I always say that the competitiveness a program does not always correlate with how good of a program it is. For example, UTSW is a lot easier to get an interview than NW, but in my opinion is a much better IM training program. I think this holds true for a handful of the southern programs - not as competitive to match, but certainly on par or better than programs located in more desirable locations.

Apart from its name, Stanford does not really have a great training program according to some residents I know there. They do not think that they will have the confidence to walk into any situation and deal with it like perhaps someone at UCSF or JHU would.

I think if you want to remain in academics and like research then Stanford might be good for you.

damn... really wanted to check out the san diego zoo...

Just received my 2nd Stanford rejection e-mail. I think I got it the first time around, thanks alot a**holes.

Ucla, Ucsd, Stanford. Up to seven rejects and 0 interviews post Mspe....scared.

If you're getting concerned, I'd suggest emailing programs and restating your interest. Gotten 2 interviews in the past 3 days like that.

Good luck!

ucsd
but i'm not from west coast, so it's cool

Emailing programs you got rejected at or those that have not yet responded? How did you word your email by the way?

+ stanford x 2, ucla (via mail), ucsd......I smell ucsf on the way. 🙁

Has Yale traditional sent out many invites yet? No one seems to be posting.

Primarily programs that I haven't heard from. I'm couples matching so my emails basically state:

1) im interested, 2) my fiancée has an interview at that hospital or in that city, so we wanted to check our status (or vice versa), 3) if they haven't finishing reviewing my file/MSPE, than I just want to restate my interest and am willing to wait.

Also, I did email one program that I got a rejection from. I know 2 people personally that got invited to their top choices after initially being rejected. Interview spots opened up late and the PD must have remembered seeing their email. One of those friends actually matched to their #1 choice after an initial rejection... So it's def possible, and at this point, it can't hurt, right?

Good luck!

Stanford and UCSD. Oh well. I can't say I'm surprised, but it doesn't mean I have to like it! 👎

From what I'm seeing and hearing NW has gotten pretty competitive. More than most midwestern programs. I guess that's why they're rejecting more.

Got an unofficial rejection from UPenn... 🙁

And shortly following: Hopkins
