I got rejected by UCLA today via snail mail 🙁

If it's any consolation Dr. Friedmen's wording was very soothing.

"This year we had tons of overqualified applicants"...etc etc

snif snif

I wish that they would at least wait for my step II score...

UCSD rejection today.

UCLA rejection by snail mail - a nice one -I'd rather have it over email though. It's easier. Still waiting on a few. I guess my chances decrease everyday... Ah well.

Duke via e-mail. They sent a nice sounding e-mail, but it was my first rejection so I have nothing to compare it to. Well that's one less hotel!

JHU by email

no baltimore for me.

JHU: What did the 5 fingers say to the face?
Me: What?
JHU: SLAAAP!!

cheers to being mediocre!

JHU - but I only had 3 letters so maybe that was why.

Also got Mount Sinai - North General program , couldn't care less. Bet they new that and that's why they rejected me.

got a rejection from LIJ yesterday...

funny thing.....just a couple of weeks prior, the program coordinator told me to expect an interview in the near future....

is it b/c they finally figured out I wasn't jewish? 😱 😱

REJECTED BY NORTHWESTERN - suprising to me, I'm regional and competitive. Oh well.

No baltimore for me. On the bright side, just got back from my first interview at Emory - quite a pleasant surprise. It's a great program.

UCSF today. No surprise there. Can't afford to live in that city on that salary anyways.

UCSF today via e-mail. Not entirely surprised, but it still hurts. Hopefully it won't set the tone for the week.

let me hop in here -- i was also rejected today by UCSF, by e-mail... i think its funny that the subject line of the e-mail was "Thank You Letter"....

they are "thanking me" for applying by rejecting me.

touche.

So, I called NYU today and was told that my application was on hold. Basically, the program director will review it again in mid-December, then decide if he wants to interview me. To be honest, I'm kinda surpirsed by this. I've gotten interviews at both Cornell and Mt. Sinai which I believe are both superior programs to NYU. Here are my stats, does anyone else think its fishy?

AOA, Step 1: 250, strong LOR's and extra currics, 2 pubs,
I'm from a little known southeast med school...could that be the reason?

Just got my rejection from Northwestern today as well--surprised and a bit disappointed...Thought I was pretty competitive as well, but I guess c'est la vie, no?

Will DEFINITELY attend my UIC interview then...

My list:

JHU
Northwestern

Metastatic dz: I am very surprised that your app is on hold. It doesnt matter what school you come from in the US, a step 1 of 250 with positive LORs etc etc should automatically qualify for an interview at NYU and most places for that matter.

I think what is going on here is a phenomenon that is a by-product of the electronic application system. It is so easy to apply that the same people have flooded all of the more desirable programs with applications.

Now the people who receive 20 invites and their list reads: hopkins, mgh, cornell, columbia, nyu, mt sinai, mayo, duke, BIDMC, BW, yale, ucla, ucsf, wash of st louis/barnes-jewish, etc etc will most certainly not be able to attend 20+ interviews. Those people will start canceling by the end of november. At that time, the program directors will probably review the apps which they are referring to as "on hold" and perhaps offer some invites to fill their annual quota of interviewees and insure that the program directors' rank list is long enough that the program does not go unfilled.

Basically, the programs do not want to reject too many people too soon because once they send the rejection, they cant exactly go back and offer the invite. It sucks because the programs are hedging their bets and it keeps everyone waiting, but I guess it is also good because if you do get the interview, that means you have a chance of making it to the program director's rank list and did not just waste your time and money traveling to some place that does not want you anyway.

If I have not heard from a program by now, I am personally assuming that I am not one of the "favored" applicants to that program even if an invite does eventually roll by. Other people might have different opinions.

Yeah, that is pretty weird. I got an invite to NYU, but by the numbers, you have nearly the same application as me except that I don't have pubs. I am at a school in upstate NY, though...I am beginning to suspect more and more that there is a regional component to all this. It sucks! Do you think it might help for you to send a letter to the PD emphasizing your interest in relocating?

I agree with BigBadBix that emphasizing your interest to a program might help. The only risk of contacting a program is that the program might offer a courtesy interview which would be a waste of your time and money. However, everything else aside, if it is a program that you are truly interest in, then perhaps getting in touch with them would be helpful. Just my thought.

well my blue monday just got bluer ... rejected by UCSF and Northwestern

My list:
UW (old)
Northwestern
UCSF
MGH
Stanford

Don't give up hope! As I mentioned on another post, I was in my PD's office the other day (competitive North east program) and he pointed to the stack of applications in the corner and said he hadn't even gotten to those yet. My assumption was that they had not been parsed at all, ie, yours could be in that stack and be just as qualified... I'm hoping that's what has happened with all my applications still pending...

Got the Northwestern rejection today too. I was also surprised and quite disappointed, especially since I did undergrad there as well as some research at the med school. I must've made unknown enemies there or something, as I was summarily rejected for med school and now residency, even though I've gotten interviews at other quite competetive programs. 🙁

Should I contact the program director? I wonder how much benefit that would have, since I assume a program rejects you for a reason and getting a "pity" interview may just be an exercise in futility.

Sadly, I was also rejected from UW (Seattle) today--not a good day. Maybe I won't have to pare down my list of interviews after all, as I feel the cavalcade of rejections coming now...
