I am a 3rd year DO student interested in IM. I scored around the 30% on the Comlex I and passed USMLE Step I but scored <200. I am probably ranked just below the 50% in my class. I really don't want to do my residency in a cold weather state. Does anyone know of any programs in the southern US that I have a decent chance of matching at? Also, any suggestions of where to do some 2-4wk rotations in my 4th year would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

The IM program at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, SC, typically does not fill...I don't know why: fantastic attendings, very personal teaching, friendly residents. Might partly be that it's in Columbia, which has a bad rap as a steaming sandpit but is actually a great place to live - lakes 10 min away, beach 1.5 hours away, little traffic, affordable housing, safe neighborhoods, plenty to do. Some good reviews are on Scutwork.com. I go to school here and will probably stay here for residency and will be happy to answer any questions.

Thanks for the info....does anyone know about IM residencies in Texas?

What is up with this board.....not much activity.

I looked at that program

Do they Have Fellowships?

Or are their fellowships over at MUSC in Chas

Also how competitive is it over at MUSC in Chas for IM

I get the impression that MUSC IM is slightly above average in competitiveness. I'll most likely apply there as well, and would be curious what other people think.

In Columbia, SC at the University of SC SOM there are fellowships in endocrinology, geriatrics, and a couple others but not your mainstream fellowships. MUSC in Charleston has all fellowships. You can see the listings for Columbia at Palmettohealth.org. I think the MUSC IM program in Charleston is mildly to moderately competitive. I think it's decent program with one of the main draws being the city of Charleston. I have not heard anythiing good or bad about the program so I'm even a little in the dark about it.

Try Breckenridge Hospital in Austin. Not competitive very laid back IM program. About 50% IMGs 50% US grads. I honestly don't know if there were any DOs there, but it was a decent program in a GREAT city. Austin is like San Francisco. I don't know how it ended up in the middle of TX, but it is a great city to live in. The program is being taken over by UTMB, so it might become more academic. Otherwise, the Methodist in Dallas took several residents when the only Osteopathic Hospital in Dallas closed.

Does anyone know how hard it is to get into UTMB IM for someone from SGU.

I am going to be a first year med student and my husband is applying for residency this coming year...are they likely to take our situation into consideration.

I'm pretty sure UTMB takes students from SGU/Ross, . I know they thought they had their best match ever this year, though. So maybe they will be tougher next year?
