My wife is an Indian national and I am a British citizen. We both live together in London. My wife is thinking of going to the US. She is a qualified dentist in India and will have an MSc in Dental Public Health from the UK by September of this year. She wants to go to the US in September 2007, study for her National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) Part I in that time, and apply to dental colleges in summer 2008 for admission onto a dental degree program in the first half of 2009. Before her admission, she would ideally like to work, possibly in the field of dental public health if such an opportunity presents itself.

Does anyone know:

1) How my wife gets a visa to remain in the USA for up to 18 months prior to commencing a dental degree program. Can this be done on a visitor visa?

2) Can my wife get a student visa to do the NBDE (Part I)?

3) Can my wife work in the US on a visitor or student visa, or by changing her status/ getting a work permit once she is over there?

4) Would it help if we both applied together to go to the US, for a one-year holiday for example?

Thanks a lot.

No. Visitor visa is only for 6 months initially. She will need to extend it for 3 months at a time.

2) Can my wife get a student visa to do the NBDE (Part I)?
No. She needs to be enrolled in an academic program to be able to get a student visa.

3) Can my wife work in the US on a visitor or student visa, or by changing her status/ getting a work permit once she is over there?
She cannot work fulltime on a student visa. Only 20 hours per week as specified by her international student advisor. She will need to seek an employer if she wants to change her status or to get a work permit.

4) Would it help if we both applied together to go to the US, for a one-year holiday for example?
No. You won't be able to holiday in the US for 1 year.

Thanks a lot.

Again, this forum is not for asking specific advise on immigration laws. No one here is a practicing lawyer - we just pretend to be on the net. So it's your duty to seek a legal counsel wherever you live and receive proper advice before deciding on anything that could be potentially life changing.
