I go to school with a girl who told me she got into Johns Hopkins. She doesn't remember what her MCAT score was (which raises red flags automatically) and has around a 3.3 GPA. She also said that she volunteered some, but that was it for her extracurriculars. I find this hard to believe, but I obviously can't just call her out on it. It's been grinding on my mind ever since..I just don't see how someone could lie about something like that. Any ideas on the matter?

I would think forgetting your MCAT score is a big red flag

I always think it's strange when people can't remember their MCAT score and they're either in med school or right out of it. It's a two digit number, not that hard to remember. I remember my SAT, which was terrible, and I didn't even care about it that much.

Maybe she's lying? I mean I remember my SAT, ACT, and Subject tests from 3 years ago.

Or maybe she just doesn't want to brag or talk about her score. It seems really neurotic to care about this. How would it be different if you knew what her score was?

Those are my feelings, but I can't figure out why. We attend a fairly small school, and the premeds pretty much stick together; before, during, and after med school. I still keep in touch with our AMSA president from two years ago, as well as our VP who went into pharm school and a member who went into med school last year. I just don't see why she would lie...she's going to be found out eventually.

Yeah, I can tend to be on the neurotic side sometimes. It isn't so much I want to know what her score was, I was just interested in how she got into JH. Of course every situation is different, but people from our school don't normally get accepted into the top tier schools. Just curious, I guess.

Nor should you call her out even if you could somehow confirm that she was not actually accepted. It's her life, her choice to tell people what she wants (honest or otherwise), and doesn't have any effect on you.

If you worry about these things you'll drive yourself nuts. Concentrate on yourself without comparison to others, and let these type of people just float on by.

Most people don't normally get accepted into Johns Hopkins. Just saying.

you sure she's even premed? haha even if she was lying she could make up a fake-score number on the spot if she was familiar with MCAT scoring.

maybe you caught her off-guard in asking? no idea

She probably wore something low cut to interviews. It's not fair, but I'm pretty sure that's why there's been a huge surge in female med school admissions over the past decade

Why not?

This sounds like the excuse I give to nosy people when they ask me what I got on a test, final exam, etc. Why should she feel obligated to tell you her information, especially since you just turn around and discuss her stats with people on an online forum?

Who gives a flying ****? People lie. Welcome to earth.

I hope you're joking...

OP, relax. If she lied about it, it's probably because she's got some major personal issues. Or she's just the kind of person who makes crap like that up. Either way, it doesn't really affect you in any way so I'd just let it go.

Either:

1) She's lying. This will, however, have no impact on your life.

or

2) She's telling the truth. This will also have no impact on your life.

That reminds me of an old high school friend I ran into the other day. She told me she just graduated from Duke with a degree in Veterinary Assistant. I looked her up on Facebook and found out she graduated from some 2-year trade school in Durham. 🙄

Yes you sure can call her out.

Put her on the spot. How can you not know if she is lying or not, i would think it is very obvious, ask her about the school etc and she doesn't know her mcat score? I think you would know your own mcat score especially if you were accepted to Johns Hopkins...also how do you just forget? She can retain all the info the mcat test but not remember her score?? Sounds like an idiot

yea and her GPA sucks.

Okay. What I suggest is that you gather as much information about her as possible. Dig through her trash for an documents she has forgotten to shred. Find vital information such as date of birth, SSN, etc. Applying for a few credit cards for her while you're at it. Make sure you do this at night and wear all black. Gather all this information and write it down on a wall/whiteboard. Also, stick pictures of her and any related pictures of her on the whiteboard/wall as well. Connect all the info on your wall/whiteboard with lines to form a web.

Now, once you have enough details about her identity, call the AAMC and tell them you forgot you account information. When they ask you security questions, you will have all the answers. They will give you your AAMC ID and mail a password reset link to the e-mail on file. But you don't have access to that email. So, before you call AAMC, create a fake email with her first and last name to make it seem legit. Then, while you're on the phone, ask AAMC to update your email as well.

Now, you'll have access to her AAMC account. Login and check the MCAT score. Also, you can login to AMCAS to see where all she applied. With this information in your hands, you can even impersonate her (with a voice changer) and call Johns Hopkins to verify that she was indeed accepted there.

Hope this helps. If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask for more protips.

This wasn't quite the direction I thought this post would go. I was merely curious of the chances to get into Johns Hopkins with that GPA, even with a great MCAT score. Thanks for the responses.

If that's the case, why didn't you just ask, "What are the chances of getting into Johns Hopkins with a 3.3 GPA, even with a great MCAT score?" I would've been more inclined give you a helpful answer if you had phrased it that way instead of getting so worked up about someone possibly lying about her MCAT score/med school admissions.

Anyway, I'd imagine the chances are slim but absolutely possible. Check out this recent thread about the GPA and MCAT range for matriculated students at UTSW (a top 25 med school): http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?p=11123209.

If she's telling the truth, there must have been something outstanding about her application (high MCAT, amazing PS, rigorous courseload, etc.) that compensated for her GPA. As you can see in the above link, a low GPA will not keep you out of med school.

More probably than not, it was a lie.

/end thread.

Good point. I guess that question could have been posed without the personal bs involved. Thanks for the link, pretty interesting!

Just playing devil's advocate here, but maybe she just didn't want to brag about getting a 43...

that's not fair at all.

She doesn't remember her MCAT? :bullcrap:

Her pants are totally ablaze.

Maybe she got into hopkins with a lower mcat score because she has an awesome backstory and she is sick of people being amazed that she got into hopkins with a lower mcat and implying she isn't qualified. so she says she can't remember to change the subject. It could happen. Honestly I can think of a million reasons why she would say she doesnt remember her mcat if she really did get into hopkins and a million reasons why she would also say that if she is lying. The important thing is that she doesn't want to talk about it with you. Take a hint, OP.

How did her Hopkins acceptance come up? It's very rude to ask people you hardly know about their qualifications unless they voluntarily start discussing it. Don't be that pre-med.

Technically, GC only said she was lying about not remembering her score. So you could both be right. :poke:

you actually asked someone what their mcat and gpa were outside the confines of student doctor?

I think it is unfair to call her a liar. She may not want to tell you her score and that's why she said she forgot. I get annoyed by nosy people sometime and tell them I don't remember.

Also, I can't remember my exact SAT, SAT II, or AP scores. I know what range I scored in but I can't remember the exact numbers anymore. Some people are just like that...

She did start voluntarily discussing it. Who the hell goes around asking people what they got on the MCAT or where they got accepted!?

I was talking with some friends last week about taking it yesterday (which was fun, as I'm sure you all know). She entered the conversation talking about how it wasn't that bad, and the conversation went from there.

I don't understand why you can't call her out. I mean, yeah you'll end up looking like an *******, but what's wrong with that?

It doesn't affect me if she's lying or not. I'm not one to belittle a person for something like that. If she got into JH; great! I'd like to know how to see if there is something extra I can do to be in the same position. If not; I'll still be going wherever I go, and she will live her own life.

That's why I reiterated that my point was whether it was possible. I'm not one to be a dbag for dbag's sake.

Answer to your question:
It's likely that she got a good MCAT score (and that she's lying about it for whatever reason), but that alone won't be good enough for Hopkins. Plenty of students who apply to Hopkins have really high MCAT scores along with strong GPAs (and they still get rejected). In other words, her score probably didn't matter all that much.

If she got into Hopkins, it's very likely she had an amazing story/amazing unique activity that you wouldn't be able to replicate because you're not her. Knowing what she did won't help you all that much...

oh and also...she might have been lying about her GPA as well (plenty of people do that at my school to avoid being labeled as a gunner)
